For a guy who doesn't care about big-time sports and is leaving in May, why do we think he is acting now versus letting the next President deal with this on more of a long-term basis? Surprised at this one. I expected more inaction from Barchi than action in this area.

I think he cares more than people give him credit for. He cares when his school is being dragged through the headlines. He cares when he sees that the students aren't being rewarded for footing the bill for a chunk of athletic costs.

He understands that Sports and Football are great marketing tools for the whole university. Look at those ads that Rutgers runs (for free) on the BTN. He has brought up many times the type of exposure that Rutgers is getting from being in the Big Ten. To equal that without the Big Ten would cost the schools millions.
He gets that winning teams equals more donations and more applications from students. Again, the proof is there and he has brought this up many times before in print and in town halls and other meetings.

He also gets that with sports it works both ways.

I thought I read he is stepping down in May now that his job is done here. If I misread anything, I stand corrected.

If he had announced that he was stepping down, then Rutgers would be conducting a search for a new president. That isn't happening.

His contract does not have a term; he is here indefinitely until he resigns, dies, or is fired. His contract requires him to give 1 year notice if he resigns. So we know he has no plans to resign within the next year. Since the BOG keeps giving him performance bonuses, you can assume that the BOG is not looking to fire him. Based on public comments he's made about plans for Rutgers over the next 5 years, I expect him to be here in 2020.

I've been trying to learn more about Barchi. Why did he even take the RU job? From what I could find, he was just about to step down (presumably his own decision) at his previous stop and was getting paid more. Very curious.
