Source - With temperatures projected to be in the single digits by kickoff, will this be the coldest regular-season game that Rutgers has ever played? I'm imagining that it will be as Rutgers - over the last 151 years - has not played regular-season games this late in the year and the likelihood of extreme cold in September, October, or November is minimal. The games that Rutgers has played in December or January over these last two decades have been (bowl) games in warm-weather climates or indoors. Can you verify? Do you have access to any weather stats? Thanks.

November 21st, 1987 at Temple was absolutely brutal. It will be in the low 20s tomorrow at kickoff. Not sure if that will be as cold as the Temple game.

WVU was bad (snow is not an insulator). BC in Boston (wife took the kid in the bathroom to keep warm). Pitt in the Meadowlands (Wife took to rum to keep warm with a bad result). VT in Blacksburg (I had to buy VT sweatshirt to help unsuccessfully warm up) All contenders.

One year in Colorado, during fall camp (August), we had snow flurries. We're talking about the last week of August...WTF. July is the only month on record never to record any snowfall. Single digits are the norm at this time of the year. Before Colorado built an indoor facility, we practice outside for bowl games. Once in a while, we travel to Denver to use the Broncos facility. This past week Colorado played Utah, and the temps were near single digits with snow on the field. I don't miss any of that.

We had an at Army game where it both rained and snowed....Army gave the away fans the endzone seats, and they seemed to be out in the open, subjecting you to the elements even more....I think this was the most uncomfortable cold game I
sat through...there were a ton of hot games in comparison...

I believe that army game was the one where the fan bus from
RU had the around the world ride, and the fans missed the first half.

i am seeing temps going from about 23 and down to 21 or so...you might be looking at the "feels like" temp with wind, etc

Schiano said in his presser that he didn't think he'd ever coached a game in single digits..

What’s the coldest game Rutgers ever played in? Whatever game it is has to beat the November 21, 1987 contest at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia when Rutgers defeated Temple 17-14. “Both teams were banged up going into the game and came out of it worse. The 7,863 fans who braved 25 degree temperatures and a wind chill of minus 11 degrees to watch, weren’t feeling too chipper either,” according to the Sunday edition of the Home News. Veterans Stadium’s restrooms were the only heated place for fans at the game and were packed during halftime. Playing in bitter cold is not confined to the 20th or 21st centuries. According to the December 10, 1876 New York Herald, Yale defeated Columbia two goals to nothing at the St. George Cricket Club grounds in Hoboken. They played from three to five o’clock in -14 degrees weather in front of 300 fans.

Single digits ?
The forecast is for 23 degrees and no wind for 7:30pm in Piscataway tomorrow night

On a Friday night in November 2007 up at West Point....absolutely miserable weather. Schiano had Rice pound the ball on the ground all game. And yes, apparently the TD Club bus ride from hell (I wasn't on it but we've all read about the horror story on this board).

We were there and it was the most miserable RU football game we ever attended. The bus ride was late waiting for the brother of a player I believe...

If Source knows the answer here, then he is a brilliant man

This thread further confirms the long repeated statement "Rutgers needs an offense that can handle the cold, snowy Northeast weather" is completely false.

We finish the regular season in Nov on Thanksgiving weekend.
At best, we will have 1 "bad" weather game a year.

yes.... I remember this one in particular because the snow/sleet was hitting us face on, pretty much the entire game.

Wow I totally remember this. I wasn’t even there but remember people on the board talking about the experience - this was a long time ago right??

IIRC Teel had a bad thumb and had problems early so there was a major dose of Jabu. Driving home on the Palisades with the fog was an experience

Agree. I was there. Maybe just a few hundred at the Vet that day!

Yeah I recall Teel's thumb being an issue and Jabu coming in for relief. Ray had a 200+ yard rushing game with the help of the OL dominating the trenches on his way to breaking Willis's single game record.

My drive was back down 87/Thruway to the GSP and it was indeed quite the nail biting ride.

Worst weather game MrScrew & I ever attended. IIRC no one anticipated that weather and so we were all woefully under dressed for it. I don't think we thawed out for 2 days after that game.

Add dense fog to what you dealt with and that was the PIP.

where teh heck you seeing that? Granted Piscataway can be -5 or more than New Brunswick.. but with no wind should be 25 or so... even the "feels like". (BTW.. why doesn't the "feels like" go UP above the temp when the sun is strong? No wind.. catching rays... toasty).

I do recall some brutally cold night games in November up at Giants Stadium... in the early 80s we would play teams like Pitt and WVU up there. The swirling winds in that place made everything feel worse.

I remember that week. Preparing for a Thanksgiving game sophomore year in high school. Coldest I have ever been. And I have ski'd for 40 years. Remember the windchill that week was 10-15 below.

I went to a Jets home night game vs Cincy last week or two of the season before MetLife opened had to be 2009. Single digit temps and that wind. There were homemade fires/fire pits all over the parking lot for the tailgate. The asphalt pavement was disintegrated all over the place from their heat place looked like a minefield. Some crazy drunk 250lb Bengals fan stripped down to an orange onesy and ran around the parking lot. I'm staring in amazement under my five layers of clothing. Jets ended up crushing them too

Good times, man

That was the coldest game I have ever been too because it rained in the first half and then turned to snow in the second half so myself and the rest of us were soaking wet and then frozen!!!

I remember the 2007 game very well. In fact I was at every game that year. Thought Louisville 2007 was worse, not as cold obviously but we blew a 14 point 4th quarter lead and the camera kept panning to my dad and I in the visitors section.

I second this. I was completely unprepared for how cold and wet that evening was. I recall getting home at 1 am and just standing in the hot shower till 2 am.

The coldest game I recall was against Syracuse in the Meadowlands (day after Thanksgiving) in 1993. It snowed a day or so earlier and the snow melted and turned to ice. My seats were 1st row on the shady side (south side). I think the game was like 11 AM or Noon. My feet were so cold from the ice that we left at halftime. It was the only time I ever left a Rutgers game early until the Penn St game where it started sleeting / freezing rain that stung when it hit your skin.

That was 2007, and many of us were huddling together under the end zone stands, bathrooms, wherever there was space. Ray Rice's mother was among us. It may not have been the coldest game I've ever been to but it sure felt like it. But it ended in an RU win so the ride home was still fun.

Lots of cold games over the years. Colgate in Hamilton, NY, last game for a few years. WVA game on Halloween around 2010 at home. Rain, than sleet and snow, totally miserable.
Warmest home game - Virginia 1962 Dec 1st, 70 degrees lost 41-0.
Most wind - UConn away 1973 constant 30 mph with 40-50 mph gusts. All day. Had to get inside a fast food joint to escape and the silence was deafening. Metal bleachers type seats on the RU side.
Lost 27-19. Impossible to pass into the wind and they just kept running the ball for 5+ yards a clip in the 4th qtr.

I was one of the people who was on that TD club bus. Started out by taking route 18 to the parkway instead of 287 North. An hour into the trip we were were on the parkway near Clark when the driver pulled over so she could use the bathroom in the back of the bus. The bus got lost on the way to WP and the low point on the trip to the stadium was when we had to pull over near a laundermat and ask directions. If I remember correctly, a cop happened to stop and gave us an escort to the stadium. We arrived about 2 minutes to go to halftime. Snowed and rained until the game ended. After the game, the bus wasn't to be found. We wandered around for about 90 minutes until we found more RU fans looking for the bus. We finally found the bus and started the long trip home. I think we got back around 4AM. They also had sent up a replacement bus as the original one had no working wipers. Anyone who left their stuff on the original bus had to go to the depot to get their stuff back. Since it was a work day, most people had worked and then went on the trip. A very long day.

Two miserable weather games come to mind: November 7, 1981 at Giants Stadium when Marino brought his #1 Pitt team and beat us 47-3. The wind chill was brutal. The other was the nor’easter blizzard game on October 29, 2011 against West Virginia who beat us 41-31. It always feels colder when you’re losing.
