our guards rebounded a bit tonight and so disparity wasn’t great. Can’t fault Ogbole because the only played seven minutes. But Somerville‘s inability to check out and rebound is becoming a major problem. And in general, our guys do not pursue the ball off the glass. The three-pointer, long rebounds excuse is wearing thin. That’s why they call it checking out. You put your butt into your guy’s mid-section and you check out by pushing him away from the basket.

Not a wash. Team must get rebounds off of missed FT. They have the inside position but Somerville gets pushed around. He tries to box out but maybe he’s not strong enough or is not adjusted to playing again more mature players just yet. He needs to learn to rebound better.

somerville again, getting pushed around and not pursuing the ball really hurt us against Alabama. And his playing time is was reduced because of it. If this trend continues, it will affect his development in a very negative way. I don’t know how this guy got through high school this aspect of the game at his position.

How many guys his size could he have played against in HS? Coaches need to work with him on footwork, positioning and getting stronger.

Sommerville was a terrific high school player who dominated because of size and offensive skillset. The jump to college play has been a challenge as the competition gets stronger.

Which is why big men tend to take longer to develop once they get to college.

And if there’s no one near you to box out you go find someone, throw a forearm in their chest, spin and box them out. It’s desire not rocket science.

I think it’s a wash. If you go for the steal you aren’t in position to get the rebound. I agree that Somerville needs a lot of work on the D side. But I’m talking about the team.

He’s got tremendous potential and is the most offensively skilled big we’ve had in forever. We’ve just got to deal with the fact that he’s going through typical freshman stuff right now. Hopefully he can tighten things up as the season progresses.

not when it comes to rebounding. Rebounding is a pretty basic skill. Check your guy out. Pursue the ball. Somerville lacks basic rebounding skills.
Includes rebounding, the point is the same. When you are bigger and stronger than the guys you are playing against in high school, you can rebound well by just relying on your size and strength advantage.
