Remember when we had a defense that was feared and a coach that demanded respect?

Remember when we had that same coach you're referring to that everyone knew was a horrible gameday coach? Who would play so conservatively once he got a lead that we'd often BARELY pull off a win? Who could recruit heaps and loads of NFL quality talent that he'd develop into fantastic players...yet never won a conference championship in the Big East? That ran the wildcat as his main offensive strategy for a full year? Who hired Kyle Flood?

Greg Schiano did an amazing job of building a program. He was a fantastic recruiter, his defenses were great, his program was clean.
He was not god.

I suck at the internet.
But if you don't click on my link above UCONN crushed us.

I would prefer "Barely pulling out a win" to losing by 40 points to any team with a pulse. I agree he was a bad game day coach when he started, but he definitely improved. Also, he teams were always prepared. I loved watching them walk off the bus at bowl games. They were focused and ready.

Amen. Coach and team demanded respect...or they took it (even through some gut wrenching loses). I just want to feel something again even if it's that

Let's not make him out to be Bill Bellichek. His defenses were solid most years. In 2006 it was very good for the majority of the season; was only really great during the second half of football vs. Louisville and the Navy and Illinois games. Our D in the 2006 season finale vs. West Virginia vs. a back up QB left a lot to be desired. Same to be said for the 2006 Cincy game when Brent Celek went absolutely nuts. One characteristic about his defenses though is that they put pressure on offenses and caused turnovers. And yes they swarmed to the ball.

Would I take it over this mess? In a heartbeat. But let's not revise history. I just dislike when the word "great" is thrown around. The '95 Nebraska defense was "great". The 2007 LSU defense was "great". Rutgers 2006 defense was very good.

How many teams with a pulse did he actually play? I get that OSU, PSU, Michigan, and MSU aren't the same caliber fans WV, Cinci, and Fresno but........

I'd like to point out this year's game against both Michigan State and Washington State, both of which are/were ranked. Indiana this year wasn't a cupcake. Last year's win over Maryland. Those are teams with pulses. I don't think Flood should stay. I think he's bad for the program, and I think he's not ready for this level of coaching. But I'm looking at this objectively, and Schiano was terrible as a gameday coach. Do you honestly not remember how bad he was at running gameday? How many times the players came out and simply choked because they were playing tight? Have you completely suppressed 2010?

He was also the guy in charge when Rutgers became the first team in NCAA history to have a 2,000-yard rusher, a 3,000-yard passer and two 1,000-yard receivers in the same season. Many seem to conveniently forget about those numbers.

I'd rather recruit NFL quality talent than what we've been doing now. Was he a great gameday coach? No. Was he a God? No. Was he miles and miles ahead of Flood? Absolutely.

He's not my first choice, but if he wants to come back and is one of the few to want the job, I'd love to see what he could do in the Big Ten. People talk about him being afraid to play good teams. I think he had a strategy to build RU up as a program so that the school might ultimately get a Big Ten or ACC invitation. It's hard to believe he is AFRAID to play good competition when he jumped to the NFL to compete against the best coaches in football.

8-5 in 2007. I think years 2007-2009 get conveniently forgotten.

2007 team had a Jr Mike Teel, Ray Rice, Kenny Britt, Underwood, Tim Brown, an upperclassmen offensive line and a Freshman Anthony Davis.

On defense both McCourty twins, George Johnson, Eric Foster, Renkhart, Courtney Greene, Malast, Munoz.

His players did not choke! And to use 2010 as a point of reference shows a complete lack of sensitivity. Or did you SUPPRESS what happened that season? We would be blessed to have Coach back!

Good heavens. He had good years and bad. He played as many cupcakes as he could schedule, but beat some good ball clubs as well. He developed a lot of players, but had some notable disasters. He beat Louisville in a great game, and lost to WVU 80-7.

Great recruiter, good player developer, bad game day coach. Highly organised, ran a tight ship, people didn't like working with him.

Has he learned? Would he come here with the fire and passion, but with the maturity to bring in quality people and give them some latitude?

I don't know. Don't think anybody else does either. I'd be willing to go with him, but there are others I think we could get whom I'd take first.

Best thing about hiring GS is that he won't come here if he doesn't think he'll get the resources to be successful. A coordinator or MAC guy might be swayed by the chance and the salary and sign on for a bunch of promises.

He was also the guy in charge when Rutgers became the first team in NCAA history to have a 2,000-yard rusher, a 3,000-yard passer and two 1,000-yard receivers in the same season. Many seem to conveniently forget about those numbers.

You're making my point about 2007. What amazing players. What a team full of talent. Which still got blown out by West Virginia (as usual), and finished 3-3 in conference. Great win over USF.

2008 wasn't bad, even with a blowout loss to UNC.

2009 was pretty good, win wise,, especially if you ignore the blowout losses to Syracuse and Cincinnati. Plus, uniforms were on point.

His players did not choke! And to use 2010 as a point of reference shows a complete lack of sensitivity. Or did you SUPPRESS what happened that season? We would be blessed to have Coach back!

We lost to Tulane before Legrand got hurt, if that's what you're referencing. TULANE. TULANE. TULANE. TULANE.

Are you forgetting this?

And this?
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...to-make-the-wildcat-formation-effective-again

To quote on comment from way back in 2009...
"All the defense needs to do is load the box because you know he is going to run. It is a waste of time and non effective." Sound familiar?

Schiano's real legacy was that he changed expectations. RU fans expect winning seasons and bowl games every year now. That wasn't always the case. That said, the 2007 and 2008 teams should have been better than they were, and 2006 was a big missed opportunity. How different is the trajectory of this program if they win the BE and the Orange Bowl that season?

Former AD's allowed Greg to pad his resume by scheduling some of the easiest OOC games in major college football year in and year out. Win 4 out of 5 OOC games every year and a Bowl Game was not hard to achieve.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

HAIL TO PITT!!!!
He was also doing it with under the radar, undeveloped talent. Until 2011 or so he was constantly coaching a team with less talent than Louisville, WVU, Cincy and Pitt. Remember, recruiting is a 4-5yr process. We started seeing the dividends of the 2006 season in 2011 and 2012 (the pitt crew helped as well) recruiting classes. For the majority of his time at RU he was playing depleted rosters with very little quality depth. In the big ten he would start pulling in classes like 2011 and 2012 (we'd be beating PSU for a lot of the NJ talent right of the bat) which should be good enough to put us into the upper middle of the big ten on the Iowa and Nebraska level most years.

I don;t understand how anyone could knock Greg after watching this pile of bull crap of a program for the last 4 years. It's so obvious that a decent coach is a difference maker. Greg may not be a rock star in some minds on this board but he is at least a decent coach who made an significant impact. And he's available and likely to be more sympathetic in negotiating terms of a coaching contract at RU.

I'm sorry to call it like it is, but what a dumb post. Newsflash: 2010 was the year of Eric LeGrand's injury. It shattered the entire program, and even a perennial top 10 team would have had trouble competing after experiencing one of the worst injuries in sports. Now, the Tulane game was bad - no doubt about it... but don't try and paint 2010 as an example year of why Schiano's a bad coach. That's disingenuous.

USF- been four or five years of hell down in Tampa. This year we turned around, next year could be very special where back as a super power. Tilden want to wish Rutgers only the very best.

You need to look at Schiano objectively on his own merits rather than comparing him to the current HC who makes nearly anyone look better. Schiano had his strengths and weaknesses. He seemed to reach a ceiling here and could not take us further. His defenses had no clue against effective spread offenses. I would prefer something different but he would be on my list to speak with and see how he currently views the job and what he might do differently a second time around.
