Richt is interested in coaching

Well that's somewhat hopeful, maybe the salary demands might not be as great either. I've said I thought it's as likely he takes time off as landing another job but if he wants come on down haha.

Who's left out there as competition? UVA? USCe? Miami? If USCe isn't interested then I think schools like us would have a decent shot at him with a little bit of a discount. Just because he made 4M at UGA doesn't mean he needs to get that salary at his next job, likely he wouldn't outside of USCe. I'd have to look up what if any discount Tommy Tuberville took from Auburn to Texas Tech. I doubt TT paid him the same salary.

Hey, if he's as open to hearing from schools as he says, then he'd definitely be a name to add to RU's list. And it is a B1G gig, so maybe he might actually have some interest, ("might" being the operative word here).

I'd imagine he would be interested in Miami, seeing how he played QB there.

He made 4 million this year but that was an increase from 3.3 last year, plus he walks with a 4 million buyout. If money really is not the main factor as Barchi said, RU has to at least gauge Richt's interest.

He is the one candidate definitely on the market who would completely change the national perception of the RU football program to one of relevance.

Yup, I think we'd have to go to at least 3M to have a chance. And then another 3M for staff. That would fit in the 5-6M budget people have been throwing around. Go with that and the see what happens, worse thing that can happen is you get a no.

Honestly, we don't know how he'd do here for sure because he's never worked at a school without the big time resources. FSU as OC and UGA as HC. So hard to know how he'd do without that behind him. BUT with a name like his and the perception and the very good results you have no choice but to take a shot whether it works or not. It's just too good an all around package to pass up even if there is that caveat. Like Tuberville at TT didn't exactly work out 3 seasons and 3 below .500 conference records but you know I can't blame them for taking the shot. You have to take the chance.

I would go after him. At the very least, if by some miracle he and Rutgers comes to an agreement, Rutgers becomes a national story because of Richt. Then all eyes will on the admin to fully support football in every way possible.

Schiano going back to Rutgers will be nationally... Schiano goes back to Rutgers. No big deal and everything is status quo in NJ.

He would be a game changer if he came here. By that I mean that EVERYONE would be forced to take Rutgers Football seriously on a national level from now on. The Big Ten would be put on notice that we will never become a doormat again.

I don't know if Rutgers would be willing or able to drop the kind of money to get him and a SEC level staff and increase the recruiting budget to do it properly.

I would love to see it happen but it might be a fantasy.

Is there anyone you think of as a surer thing than Richt?

Imagine the national CFB press talking about the high profile coaches in the B1G East and mentioning OSU, Michigan, Michigan State, Rutgers..... and not the school 4 hours west.

I've been saying this for the past 24 hours!!! If your barchi and money isn't a problem you gotta contact him and make him say no. This would be insane to pull off but crazier things have happened!

The idea that Barchi said money is not an issue has been overblown. It doesn't mean there isn't a budget. Now maybe Barchi would spend what it would take to get Richt - I don't know. But I think it is much more likely that he is saying guys like Golden, Rhule, etc are within our price range. We're going to be competitive in the market but I don't think that means we are going to compete at the $4 million mark.

With the B1G money coming in a couple years we could set his contract so it's back ended. Also we could give incentives for winning a certain amount of games and appearances in the B1G championship. There are ways to get it done we just need to see what it's going to take first then go from their.

They were talking about Richt on Atlanta sports radio at lunch (duh, it's a Bulldogs' city). One of the hosts, Buck Belue, was the UGA QB when they won the national title with Herschel Walker, and he still has major access to the program. They said Richt definitely wants to coach again and wants to call his own plays. Former OC at FSU under Bowden.

He somewhat underachieved at UGA relative to the fan base's expectations of national titles, but we should be so lucky. I absolutely hope we at least reach out and determine his level of interest.

Maybe this is the yrs of RU background making me jaded but your point is exactly why that portion of barchi's statement left a bad taste in my mouth. I hope I'm wrong but I'd guess the latter part of your comment is the correct situation and to have him try to make it seem like he's the all-mighty savior clearing coach and AD to then 'do whatever it takes' to bring RU up to competing levels is BS.
PS----add me as a 'yes' for richt.

Shit if he wants to call the plays then come on up coach Richt!!!!

If you want Richt, then you want no news in the short term .... no news = good news (at least for the next couple of days). From a negotiation standpoint, I'd be interested to see if any offers that have been made are now non-committable.

Not saying its true, but imagine if GS (or MC for that matter) had an offer on the table yesterday, they pushed back from more money (though they would have taken the deal as is), and now RU is not picking up the phone to answer their calls?

A coach like Richt and you will see Rutgers potential. We could battle just about anybody

time to pass the hat around again...does @theRU want to start the gofundme page back up and change it to the Hire Mark Richt campaign?

All i will say is if you start this we can raise a shit ton of money, but i dont think money will be an issue. Mark Richt will change this program forever... We will finally see the sleeping giant come to life!

If you going to spend say $3 Million a year on Schiano, might as well ask if Richt can work here for $4 Million. Numbers may be off and/or its so easy to spend someone else's money. But stranger things have happened in the past. This could be the challenge that Richt may be looking for away from the SEC type atmosphere. Besides, do you think Top 10 NJ kids are going to turn down to play for Mark Richt in the B1G?

I don't think paying Richt would be the issue. It would be paying his staff SEC caliber compensation AND as mentioned previously in this thread, giving him the proper recruiting budget.

I could be wrong. But sometimes it takes money to make money. If Richt (or maybe Schiano or someone else) can turn this program around may be worth theone paid up front.

Of course others (SL) may have another opinion on the subject.

Here's the point. You want to spend $2.5 million on an HC and get good, or an additional million and get a home run hire?

At 50k in the stadium each week for 7 games, it would require a raise of $3 a ticket to have that additional million. Anybody going to grumble over Richt and having to pay $3 more?

I can't figure out how to hit the "Like" button more than once. So...Like x 1 million. If Richt shows up and it just accelerates the inevitable ticket price increase, I don't think anyone would complain too much. Especially if the alternative is Golden.

If he wants to call his own plays then you're saving $0.5 M on an OC right there! :-)

If ticket prices will REALLY $5.00 more a game, paying $35 more for season tickets shouldnt be an issue... I don't think. If I can pull it off and get the cheapest season tickets (currently $235) for next year I wouldn't mind paying $275 per season ticket.

He'll wind up at UVa or USCe. He's a Southern guy. He ain't coming up North. Let's be realistic guys.

I would be MEH if it was just Golden. But you know damm well that Mark D'Onfrio will be joined at his hip... So HELL TO THE NO!!!!!!!

Is anything impossible with God?

It could be well worth his time though. Move up North for a few years and make a Big10 doormat formidable. He would be considered the hottest coach out. Could go right back to a Sec power for even more money

You have to at least try and see. This is where selling a top coach on succeeding in the media capital of the works comes into play.
