Rutgers responds to Christie remarks on sports spending

http://www.app.com/story/sports/college/rutgers/2015/03/24/rutgers-rac-christie/70390510/

RU Spokesperson responded to comments made by Gov Christie, who was asked about RU's lack of Basketball Facilities and where those funds would come from...sadly, RU's spokesperson admits that there basically wasn't any plan 2 1/2 years ago when RU was invited to join the B1G...and they still don't have a definitive plan on how to improve RU's facilites today.

Gov Christie responded to a question during his "Ask the Governor" about the lack of facilities/funds for RU Athletics:

"You're in the Big Ten [/B]and that decision was made by Rutgers, then you better be ready to compete with Michigan and Ohio State and Wisconsin and all of those other schools."[/B]

RU Spokesperson responded:[/B]

"Just like Maryland and Nebraska, we are in our integration phase with the Big Ten," university spokesman E.J. Miranda wrote in an email to Gannett New Jersey. [/B]"We are in a planning phase so that we can identify our needs, balance them out against other important needs and develop a final plan for athletics that is appropriate and responsible."[/B]

One would have thought that the "planning phase and identifying their needs" would have been done during the negotiation/selling process prior to the Big Ten's invite.

The "planning phase" is the BS way to say they are stalling and waiting for money from the big ten, or some unforeseen donor...expect the planning phase ton continue until this happens

Christie should respond like this: "Come up with a plan by 6/30/2015 or start looking for another job"

Almost 3 years is enough time to plan.

1. We need a Vision, Leadership and commitment from Barchi and the BOG/BOT to compete in the BIG both academically and athletically. That is the charter of the conference we joined.

2. We need a Plan.

3. We need to find donors and Corporate sponsors who share this vision.

I don't agree with those who say JH shouldn't unveil plan unless funding is in place. No matter what plan we have, there is never going to be full funding when it is unveiled. Get the plan out there, promote it, market it, and then donations will start coming in. There is nothing like beautiful renderings and videos to help get people excited. NJIT didn't wait for full funding for their Unveil, but now people see their vision and can start donating.

It blows my mind that the B1G didn't demand Rutgers upgrade the basketball program.

It's amazing to me that the so-called high-profile programs in Jersey are wandering lost in the woods. One of us has to break out of it and figure it out. I hope it's Seton Hall, but I would not lay a wooden nickel on it happening. I hope you guys get out of the woods somehow as well.

I agree, Christie is talking out of his @ss and people are buying it because he is saying what they want to hear. The reality is that he is the one person that can end this debate through action at the state level. Instead, he chooses to ad to the rhetoric, while providing no action or direction to the problem. In all the years he's been governor, the only other time hes given any thought to RU Athletics is when he reached out to Mike Brey during the Rice situation. Anybody that believes that he is suddenly a Rutgers advocate is foolish or very gullible.

Amen KJ. In fact, as best I can tell, he doesn't give a rat's ass about New Jersey, never mind Rutgers!

The only question I have is that since Christie cannot run for governor again, why is he saying anything he might not believe? Sure, there is no actual cost to just saying what someone else -- in this case, Rutgers -- should do, but it's not like he's promoting any kind of agenda here.

If Christie could score points by bashing Rutgers, he would. If he could score points by being supportive of Rutgers, he would. That's Chris Christie. I just don't see what he gains by saying anything he doesn't mean at this stage of his tenure

He can't run for governor again but he isn't done running for office.

So because RU Athletics has been so poorly run for the past decade or two and how most of the 400,000 RU Alumni won't donate a dime to help turN around and/or to help build new basketball facilities like most other Univ have done, it's now the Governor's responsibility to save RU Basketball and/or RU Athletics?

Wow....no wonder so much of this country is addicted to handouts.

If Christie thinks Rutgers should handle its own business, and that it's really been getting less and less support from the state... maybe NJ should give up some of the seats it controls on the Board of Governors.
