Rumors of an implosion at Tennessee

The 2016 season is a bad one for the current and recent former coaches of the Cincy Bearcats.
Tennessee has higher aspirations, but they are 5-3, and 2-3 in conference with losses to Texas A&M, Alabama and South Carolina. Not horrific. They play Tennessee Tech, Kentucky, Missouri and Vanderbilt to finish out the season. 9-3 is such a huge disappointment? When Rutgers goes 9-3, wonder what the reaction will be?

Brian Kelly, on the other hand, is having a bad season at 3-5.
And Mark D'Antonio-2-6, 0-5 in conference. Who would have predicted we would be tied with MSU at this point in the season?

It's all about expectations. Tennessee was supposed to be a top-10 team, win the SEC East, and potentially challenge Alabama. With three consecutive losses, all of that is pretty much out the window. And now it sounds like Butch Jones is losing the team.

I hope Lamont Wade is paying attention.

What does it do to PSU's expectations if you go 2-2 down the stretch and wind up 8-4? Does it depend on who you lose to?

You hit the nail on the head. Plus, they may not win the SEC East this year, with the best team they've had in a while, and with the East being the worst it's been in a while.

The over reactions on this board and twitter is far worse than anything the players do.

Who knows what happened in the meeting. They probably got together and agreed to step it up. Thats usually what teams do.

But according to the twitter generation, everything is huge drama.
Two players are transferring moron

In 2013, We were also 5-3 at this point, but in October 2013 we had mass decommits from our 2014 class and the Cohen coaching controversy. We ended up 6-6 and losing the Pinstripe Bowl with a a year long implosion ahead.

UK and Vandy are loseable games for UT.

I think this is the biggest thing. This is the year there was a path to the title game for them and it's looking shaky as of now.

I think that's a double-edged sword. Heading into the season, many PSU fans would have been content to go 8-4. Obviously, sitting at 6-2 heading into November, that would suddenly be something of a disappointment. Breaking down different records and losses to various opponents is a little too hypothetical for me this morning.

Back to the original topic, though, my point was that for Tennessee, yes, a 9-3 finish would be disappointing given expectations entering the season.

Just mentioned him in the Tennessee thread yesterday. I think he's a good DC, if Jones gets the boot I think he'll land on his feet.

He'll land on his feet but prior to Saturday he had (IIRC) the 105th rated run defense and 115th rated defense overall. Pretty bad considering he went out of his way to discuss how blown away he was by the discrepancy of defensive talent at UTjr vs PSU.

Guess he'll have to wait another year or two to get that second shot at going 3-9 as a HC.

Was surprised by your stats so took a quick look. They're 69 in total defense and 76 in scoring defense. Still nothing to write home about. They're 92 in total offense so I'm sure that doesn't help either. Not a great year for him but he did a very good job at PSU so I think he'll be okay.

Yeah, he'll definitely be okay. I check the stats each week so I can flame the UTjr guys on tMB who got quite a kick out of his talent discrepancy comments.

It was reported that he left for two reasons. One was his wife. The second was to make a run at a HC gig. Our defense is really young up front and UTjr returned a ton...maybe all of their starters from last year.

gee..will JG's dad lose his job ,the one his buddy Butch gave him so his son would attend Vols? lol.

Do you think this lack of character is a result of (1) that's just today's typical me-first athlete (2) something cultural at UT or (3) something specific about Butch and his staff. I understand you're not happy there, but shut up, suck it up, and play hard the rest of the season with your teammates and then transfer after the season. What does it say about a player's toughness to complain about getting hit and playing hurt?

Ironically, UT has a great tradition of producing big-time WRs.

Were Rutgers fans saying we were going to go Undefeated and beat Alabama and go to the playoff? No. That is why we're saying it now. I said in the preseason Tennessee was $EC-Overrated and here they are, 2-3 in conference and 5-3 overall, and they've had some close wins at that.

Jones is in over his head. If the slide continues he may be out after this year. If he loses to UK the heat will really turn up.

Don't need him now. He might have been playing all along, but with our luck, probably not.

I've been told by a friend that is a big Tenn fan that JG is the favorite to be the starter at QB for the Vols next season. Cant see why he wouldn't stick around under that scenario.

Rocky Top is fast becoming Rocky Flop!

Tennessee fans, players, boosters, and apparently coaches, all believed the pre-season hype. They simply aren't that good.

But then again, neither is Arkansas.

Maybe y'all (in my best/worst Southern accent -lived in NC for a few years) could trade defensive coordinators and it would fix everything?[jumpingsmile]
How warm is Bilema's seat?

This is more akin to a work stoppage since perhaps the cash stopped flowing.

SIAP but I didn't notice this posted above. It seems that the Tennessee coach has had a lot of trouble keeping players, according to this article from Yahoo, that confirms the transfer. He's lost 12 players from the 2014 class alone, all of whom had eligibility remaining - evidently his first big haul.

See, it wasn't just a problem with our former coach. It's the kids in the 2014 class that were the problem!

(sarcasm above)

Arkansas is far better than tenn with better quality wins...
