Akron is 7-48 since the start of 2019. Win, cover and get out unscathed by injury.
Too many blow outs of smaller programs first couple of weeks. I get why we all play these games but time to change this somehow . Maybe no cross over games to lower divisions . Or add preseason games but don’t make these games count and don’t make the stats count .
Those games would be just as pointless, or more, than playing Howard and Akron. There's no perfect solution here. These games help fund the AD of the schools collecting in the paycheck games. Besides, MAC teams tend to have a habit of beating B1G teams occasionally.
They are not pointless from a coaching standpoint. We see this weaker scheduling because it is the first time you get to see your team live against someone else.
I don't even care if we cover, let's just beat them and come out of the game healthy.
I see I didn't clearly communicate my thoughts. I agree games like Howard that are played today are not useless. Partly for what you said, and partly because sometimes those upsets do happen. Replacing these games with ones where winning and losing truly don't matter would make them less meaningful.
You see major nonconference matchups in basketball more because the top teams know that a loss won't kill their NCAA hopes. Maybe the 12 team playoff will lead to more high major programs playing each other in the football regular season.
