Rutgers football adds FCS team they have played numerous times with famous head coach to future schedule…”

Rutgers is set to pay Norfolk State a total of $875,000 in guarantees across both meetings, according to the contract: $425,000 in 2025 and $450,000 for the 2028 game.

Considering the gate we pull in for an early home game, that's money well spent.

Absolutely disgusting this guy is a head coach after what he did to those dogs.

Who in their right mind would want a kid of their mentored by a person like that?

Yet another reason why sports have become borderline intolerable.

Yes. It's a very different world we live in than the one in which I grew up. In some ways so much improved. But in ways like Vick getting that job just so much worse.
Vick was a great football player. But he's unqualified to be teaching young people anything...unless you wanna learn the best way to strangle a dog. P-O-S.

Michael Vick spent 21 months in Federal prison. He did the crime, he did the time. He has the right to earn a living.

Even as dog owner I’m not as up in arms as everyone else.

But wouldn’t be surprised if at some point (as this thread shows) someone at Rutgers will be.

That being said, if we’re going to do the FCS thing on occasion the HBC is not a bad option on a few levels. And so if you count both the MEAC and SWAC schools, we would have plenty of options.

So Vick or not, IMO scheduling specifically Norfolk State is lazy.

I am a dog LOVER and do not want to see Vick doing anything where he is a leader of young people.

And to think that other guys like Ben R and Ray Lewis didn't even get slaps on the hand and are going to the HOF and for years we had to see Lewis's sickening face telling other people how to live.

I will always dislike him for his involvement with dog fighting, but I agree he paid for it and now deserves a chance to earn a living based on his ability to do the job.
But I reserve the right to dislike him despite hearing he spoke out against animal cruelty after he was released from prison and reading this article

Not really, we are ok with the man paying his due and moving on to make a living but he should not be leading young men...
I tend to agree, but wonder if Vick learned his lesson and is truly sorry for what he done. maybe him using his past might help the young men he's coaching keep from thinking they can do as they please without consequences .

It's a very hard decision to make, should he lead young men or not, without knowing if Vick is truly remorseful for what he did and the hurt he caused the poor animals or if he only shows sorrow to make himself look better PR wise and the only real sorrow he has is for getting caught and punished for it.

What about being a great student-athlete ? Making mistakes? Doing the crime and the time ? Rehabilitating and coming out better for it

Isn’t that how the criminal justice system is supposed to work ?

The real irony is all the posters who can't stop complaining about PSU and now Vick - but have no problem rooting for a team (Rutgers) who is actively choosing to be long standing business partners with PSU and Vick.

Since I know nobody has boycotted the PSU games or called for the school to cut ties with PSU (we are actually going the opposite and hiring more and more PSU alums - McNulty) - how many plan on boycotting the Norfolk St. game?

Wait, wut?

We don’t have to play Norfolk State ever. I’ve already spelled that out.

But to tie it in with State Penn is a false equivalency IMO.

Pretty sure EVERYONE on here wanted that program shut down or punished more severely. But that’s not our own decision.

In regard to Vick doing his time etc…

There are pedifiles who have done their time and they are not allowed to teach our children. No matter how great a student they were themselves and qualified for the job.
What he did to defenseless dogs is not just a heat of the moment type of thing. He bred dogs to die for entertainment. That mindset is not something that just gets better. And even if it does, the fact is, he did it. He just should not be a leader of young men.

Maybe the dumbest post in history but not surprising.

Yes. How many here still adore Rice ? Can’t look in any direction on fall Saturdays without seeing #27 jerseys.

Homer Hypocrites. Pathetic to parse crimes/acts, find nuanced differences, etc.

either no miscreants deserve opportunities or they all do.

Thanks!
Wouldn't want to disappoint.

So are you boycotting the game?
In protest of Rutgers helping to support Vick as a coach and leader of young men?
Maybe contact the AD and tell them they shouldn't be supporting Vick.

I think this analogy is strained. Would I hire Vick for a veterinary practice? Nope. But as a football coach? I think there is enough separation from the nature of his crime.

Which is as I said earlier, I wouldn’t be surprised if something like this happened.

Agree.

But unlike the State Penn comparison, we have no obligation to help him there.

HBS once in a while for the FCS game? Yes. A good thing on a few levels. Just doesn’t have to be this one.

To me, breeding and raising dogs to fight and kill each other is right up there with the worst of the worst crimes.

For a human to be able to do that to dogs, you need to have severe, severe issues.

Personally, I would never want my child to be led by someone who has done what he has done.

I understand other people have different opinions, but again, personally, I would never be able to support a team or allow my child to play for him.

Here is a reminder:

The report also states in mid-April of 2007, Vick, Peace and Phillips hung approximately three dogs who did not perform well in a "rolling session," which indicates the readiness of a dog to fight. According to the report, the three men hung the dogs "by placing a nylon cord over a 2 X 4 that was nailed to two trees located next to the big shed. They also drowned approximately three dogs by putting the dogs' heads in a five gallon bucket of water."

Did he pay his time?
21 months in prison—-is not enough time in my opinion for what he did.

Is he remorseful?
Who knows.

Does he have a right to earn a living? Of course.

Not getting the analogy . Is your child currently or will be a top flight high school football player that would be offered a scholarship or roster spot at at an HBCU?
If so, congrats

Maybe if he does well at Norfolk State he'll be in line for the Rutgers job when GS retires.
He paid for his crimes.
