I know this will not be a popular opinion, but every epidemiologist that I have listened to has been in agreement that limiting close proximity is one of the most effective ways of slowing this spread. Slowing things down for 2-3 weeks and limiting contact may not be ideal but it is also better than months and months of spiraling hysteria.

Sure, "limiting close proximity" is an effective way of slowing the spread ... that's not the point. The point is that the risk is minimal and limiting close proximity is another way of saying "shutting down society" which, on the other hand, brings a tremendous cost on the country.

Refusing to let anyone drive cars is an effective way to end automobile deaths, but it's also a way to ensure society crumbles - so it would be laughed off as absurd by any reasonable person. The same thing is true of anyone suggesting we should have the whole country stay at home for two weeks because a portion of the public in China and Italy got a new version of the flu.

Yes, it sucks. Yes, it's possible (not even likely, but possible) that you might get sick with the same flu in the United States. Yes, it would suck if you got the Corona Virus. But shutting down society (schools, factories, places of business, airports, buses, stores, etc) over it is frankly embarrassing. The media should be ashamed of itself for stoking panic.*

* OT POLITICS: Yes, I know they are doing it intentionally to tank the economy and hurt Trump's re-election chances.

What some clearly don't seem to understand is that if we contained and controlled this enough it could be a one time event like SARS, bird flu, etc. If it reaches a certain point it will continue to spread and mutate and become a seasonal virus that comes back every single year.

If you're not too old and healthy you will probably be fine even if you get it, but obviously we don't want this to spread worldwide and become an annual flu that is here to stay if it can be prevented. It may not kill you (although some here are likely at higher risk due to their age) but it could kill your parents/grandparents. There are some experts predicting ~40% of the global population could be become infected. Even at a 1% or less death rate that is a lotttttt of people. Now add to that death total year after year. We need to prevent the spread if we can. It's tough bc you dont want to kill the world economy at the same time. There isnt really a good outcome here.

Don't conflate the fact that you personally might be ok if you got the coronavirus with that meaning this isnt a serious world health issue.

What are you basing your claim that the risk is minimal on? Don't the transmission rates suggest that it is crucial to get a handle on this ASAP before hospitals are overrun?

People obviously like being panicked. The only places people can’t go seem to be work and school everywhere else is fair game. Restaurants, bars, basketball games, zoo.... a population of 320M and 500 cases and 25 death 85% are elderly or people with secondary health issues. Amazing what we can overlook in one aspect of life but not the other

Just cause it's not a pandemic yet doesn't mean we should help it become one, better safe than sorry in my opinion

So shut down everything. Why just work and school? The classroom is probably the cleanest place a college senior has been in four years. Now they will be busy playing beer pong with used cups, flip cup, showering in a bathroom that hasn’t been cleaned since their mom came the first day of classes, having unprotected sex, and eating off of half washed plates....

You're off the reservation, dude. Look at hospitalization rates in Italy. This thing is no joke.

You (and I) have no idea what the transmission rates are. We don't know what the mortality rates are either. We don't know either of these things because we don't know how many people there are who have contracted the illness, but have very minor symptoms and never even attempted to be diagnosed (or tested). For all we know, the transmission rate is much, much higher than the experts guess it is, which also means the mortality rate is much, much lower. This is another way of saying we don't know if this is worse, about the same, or not as bad as getting the normal flu that goes around every winter.

... and since we don't know these things, it is absolutely absurd to carry on like we're in the pilot episode of The Walking Dead and run around in a complete panic. The stock market is down 10-15% in the last two weeks - it's beginning to have real world repercussions within the United States that have nothing to do with people becoming sick or dying. Enough is enough.

Funny story ... I went to the Eagles concert over the weekend and Don Henley opened the show by thanking everyone for "risking their lives" to come to the show. Then he attacked the 24/7 crisis news cycle and the arena erupted in applause and cheers.

They played well over 30 songs (3 and a half hour concert) and the woman next to me AFTER EVERY SONG applauded, then applied (and re-applied) hand sanitzer. By intermission, I wanted to pass out from the fumes.

if university are closing that means all schools..high school through elementary will close as well, ditto for pre schools and day care, so here we go...plus all retail...there is no in between, we are now headed to full scale panic and hysteria, cannot put the genie back in the bottle. Life as we know will be shut down for months. Good luck everyone and start boarding up your homes because we are now in a zombie survival movie mode
yeah you’re an idiot and this proves why.
