All of Rutgers sports are new to the Big Ten, but the Big Ten is only new to one sport.

The Big Ten is playing lacrosse for the first time this spring after the additions of first-year league members Rutgers and Maryland plus the men's lacrosse-only addition of Johns Hopkins. The season starts for the Rutgers men's team Saturday at St. John's, while the women open at home Feb. 14 against Villanova.

Rutgers lacrosse, Big Ten Conference enter new era

The B1G is going to be a bear. Before it's first game it is the second toughest league. I believe in short order it will overtake the acc.

I disagree. One of the things that makes (made from my perspective) ACC Lacrosse special is that every program is capable of making a Final Four run and winning a national title. Most Big Ten programs aren't there yet. Maryland and Hopkins combine for 50 Final Fours. The other B1G lax programs combine for a total of zero Final Fours. If B1G lax wants respect, other schools have to perform.

I think you've missed Cali's point. You are saying that the ACC 'is' the best (so
is he) and that the B1G is not as good (so is he). What he is saying is that the B1G will be
better in time. Given the "bigness" of
those football programs in the B1G and the ability for lax to piggy back on it,
there is a good chance that the B1G will eventually surpass the ACC in
excellence. I tend to agree - and actually
hope it does. Not just for RU, but for
the sport.

Another thing to add is how the B1G goes about doing things with all of their sports...

You're expected to (as RU is finding out) try and win a B1G Championship and not just show up.

I agree with Adam and Cali that this type of attitude will translate over time to be a very good thing for B1G LAX as it relates to the conference's performance on the national LAX stage.

Overtake the ACC? Doubtful.

Inside Lacrosse's Face-Off Yearbook Top 20 poll -- Notre Dame (2), Duke (3), Syracuse (4), North Carolina (6) and Virginia (10).

You're not going to see anything like that from the B1G. Hopkins and Maryland? Sure. But the rest of the B1G will be just tournament filler for a long, long time.

The ACC just needs to get its act together and push a couple more schools (Va Tech? BC? Louisville? Florida State?) to step up. I'm sure they're all concerned about getting their brains pounded but I bet that if a school hired Pressler away from Bryant, it would be a Top 20 program in 5 years. I know, I know ... they'd also need to fund a women's program to make the Title IX numbers work. But Florida showed how easy and quick it is to build a women's team -- started a team in 2010 and made the Final Four in 2012.

78 read Cali's post a little closer. Maryland and Hopkins are right there...Ohio State is quickly closing as a very good program and give Rutgers another year or two and we'll also be right there and Penn State is doing well. That's 4 of 6 teams that in 2-3 yesrs will be as good as the ACC teams you mention. Surprised that the ACC couldn't cut a deal with Hopkins which might tell you something as to where the better situation may be.

This sport has really blown up the last decade. Was not even here in any capacity 20 years ago when I was in HS. Now kids are dropping slow paced games like baseball like a hot potato for lacrosse. My 9 year old girl and 7 year old boy just started the sport this year for the first time and seem to like it. Surprised at how much my daughter enjoys it.

Not doubtful at all. I didn't say this year, I said within short order. This is based on a few factors:

1) The B1G sponsors the sport now, which has put it in a far different pedestal than it had been within every member school.
2) Support. All of these schools are now supporting lacrosse on par with acc schools, and in some cases even more.
3) Facilities. Go check out what OSU/Michigan have access to. I haven't seen Penn State's, but heard they are next level as well. Maryland and Hopkins are already in the upper echelon on the field, and likely support.
4) Recruiting. B1G recruiting is ticking up every year. Hopkins and Maryland have been killing it.
5) Coaching. The B1G has a bunch of young, hungry, active coaches, including RU's own. Penn State hired Cornell's coach fresh off a championship game appearance. Maryland's coach is a great young mind who is producing final fours, and Hopkins coach is the elder statesmen who is the winningest coach in their rich history. They will always have some exceptional in that role. Compare that to the acc and it is a conference with a lot of old coaches who are in the twilight of their career. Uva's coach is gone any year now, and RU's own Danowski isn't getting younger. Cuse's coach is up there, as is Notre Dame's. They may get great coaches to follow, but those schools haven't seemlessly transitioned from coach to coach in the past, outside of Syracuse.
6) Talent at the high school level. The game has never been more popular, and is feeding programs that can now compete and beat the teams that used to have a stranglehold (acc) on it.
7) Exposure. The B1G network, B1G engine, and Hopkins ESPN contract put it in a league of its own.

These are all reasons why the acc will not be the dominant league it was. Those days will over, and over very quickly.

I think 5 years or less
Agree with Cali's points especially now that the Big has 6 teams with an
auto to the playoffs, the Hopkins move will only make all BIG teams
better IMO. As far as the ACC yes they are the best and have been for a
while due to their commitment for decades to the sport but other teams
are catching up to them. The Ivies have always had good teams,
Denver(#1in some polls), Albany, teams in the Patriot League and other
have beat them over the years.

If the ACC falls off and think it
will, they will need to go to 6 teams. There are a lot of club teams
that if made the commitment to move up could also be competitive as the
sport and $$ grows from TV just like FB/BB.
The next conference which I
think will sponsor a league in D1 is the PAC as most schools play in a MCLA division and the west cost/Colorado areas are exploding just like here in NJ.

As have coached our towns youth rec 4-5 grade team the past 2 years(played for Loyola in the early 70's) have seen a lot of talented kids in the central Jersey area on the teams we play in 4-8 grades. A lot of these kids, like my 2 grandsons played Baseball before finding out about and will stick with it as the opportunities for collage ships exist for the sport more so than when I played. Now if Rutgers can keep some of these kids here just like FB they will be in good shape in a few years.

5 years. And let's not forget, the acc isn't even a recognized Ncaa conference in lacrosse and has no autobid, as there are only 5 teams (I believe they have an exemption this year due to have the requisite 6 last year, but that is ending). So technically, the B1G already is the best conference ;)

Kidding aside, the non autobid could be be a problem for the acc as other programs and leagues continue growing.

I'm with Cali on this one the B1G will be the premier lax conference in the nation within 5 years.

I think womens may be already I think between MD and Northwestern they have 12 of the last 14 National Championships or something like that

There is nothing to indicate the BIG lacrosse will surpass the ACC. Does an autobid really matter, when the entire conference qualifies for the tournament? There are definitely schools that could and should add lacrosse. But when every team makes the tourney and teams consistently win the title, do you really need to get your act together?

62 -- no offense, but based on the last 3 years of RU lacrosse, the first two games of this season and the recruiting strategy (in general, avoid going after kids with Top 15 offers and look in non-traditional regions), I think the suggestion that RU will "be right there" in a year or two borders on the ridiculous. As hopeless as men's hoops looks now, I'd wager that they'll get to the NCAA tournament before men's lacrosse does. And that's 10 years down the road.

Obviously, the bball tournament is much larger, but it's painful to say that RU lacrosse is doomed to be a .500 or so program. Some of my favorite memories at RU were driving to Busch and parking next to the field with friends and a case of Rolling Rock to watch John Danowski and his generation.

Lacrosse is still a (relatively) rich kids sport with private high schools or, at minimum, travel teams and their costs. If given a choice, those parents, particularly in NJ, will push their kids to private schools like Duke, Hopkins, Notre Dame, (geez) Denver and the Ivies or the more prestigeous publics like UVa, UNC and, yes, UMich. And then the next level of privates -- Cuse, Gtown, Villanova, et al. RU, OSU and PSU will get the scraps and, yes, the occasional kid who believes in his state U. And there's not much that this staff, or the next one, can do about it. Although, I'd like to see what Mike Pressler could do in this Year 3 and 4 at RU.

78 your wrong with the rich kids sport as look at all the HS teams playing it as a varsity sport now in NJ alone... Almost 200( I linked it below). As have coached our towns rec team that plays others from all over NJ its not all rich kids. Do Agree that the elite top 100 will still gravitate to some of the schools you mention but there are only so many that can be recruited by these . With the recent explosion of the sport there are plenty of good players to go around to other schools. Its all a matter of stepping up your program and getting to the level of the "elite" like you call them that think RU can and will do & dont think RU/PSU/OSU/ etc are getting scraps just need to step it up a little( look at the Lax Power rankings for all DI teams http://www.laxpower.com/update15/binmen/rating01.php)

NJ HS LAX

Dirt -- there are a couple hundred NJ high schools with football too. How many of them consistently produce D-1 football players ... and how many of the top players (or parents) opt for RU? Lacrosse is worse because (1) the kids commit when they're sophs, (2) few full rides, and (3) and the parents (and club coaches?) are more involved and are more conscious of the "brand".

Sorry to be so cynical, but it's a clubby sport at the elite level in NJ and will stay that way. Sure, there'll be ocassional star from the public school but it won't be anything like the publics on Long Island.

Nothing stays the same forever.

As LAX expands at the club level in NJ (and other new LAX areas in the rest of the country) with more and more athletes picking up a stick and saying, "Wow! This game is awesome" things will change as those guys filter into schools all across NJ (and the rest of the country too).

Just like there are those who disagree over the future with the B1G vs. ACC there are some who think your scenario is the only outcome.

Whether this translates in the new player mentioned above coming to RU remains to be seen but as Willie Sutton said about robbing banks...you go where the money (LI, Maryland, Upstate NY) is. The thing is now there are more banks with more branches on the way.

Agree with 78CollegeAve I coach youth girls lacrosse and my daughter plays club. Especially on the girls side if you look at the so called hotbeds of girls lacrosse in this state it is definitely the more affluent towns that have the better players and this is because they start playing earlier and many of them play on club teams which is the only way you are going to not only get better but in this day it is mainly the only way you can get recruited to a D1 school these days. I know the cost of these club teams which by the time you are done with a summer of tournaments can easily run $2500-3000 per year for these teams and quite simply alot of people can not afford this.

Many of the best players coming out of Jersey are from public schools. Mountain Lakes, Summit, and others are producing very good players. There is more than enough talent inside and outside of NJ in the surrounding areas, not to mention emerging areas, to get talent. It would be nice to have a lock on every school in the state, but it isn't needed to be get great talent. Very different situation than football.

I think what the 78CollegeAve and richthedentist are talking about above is the towns in bold are exactly the places one would think of in NJ for with regard to public LAX high schools...wealthy towns with a history of success in sending their players to the blue bloods and Ivies for LAX.

But I also agree with njdirt above about changes are a coming. Maybe not right away but as the sport expands at the younger ages for the club level across the State we are going to see more and more athletes from non-traditional LAX places making the scene, getting noticed and getting offers.

We are already getting kids from those schools. Look at the roster. In the case of Mountain Lakes, that has been a pipeline for years to Rutgers.

Well, Cali, maybe that's the dilemma if RU is to get to the next level. NJ public h.s. kids aren't the base for the elite programs. Go look at the rosters for NJ kids at Duke, Hopkins, UNC, ND, Cornell and you'll see Jersey kids who prepped at Lawrenceville, Delbarton, Hotchkiss, Hill School, St. Augustine's, Don Bosco, St. Peter's Prep, Choate, Hun, Seton Hall Prep, Deerfield ...

Yes, the elite programs have a smattering, as in a few, from publics like Shawnee, Rumson-Fair Haven, Glen Ridge and, yes, Mountain Lakes.

The RU staff appears to have no traction with the prep kids and it seems the same with the cream of the publics. Look at this year's freshmen, only 4 out of 14 from Jersey -- Milburn, Madison, Clark and Seton Hall Prep.

No wonder that the RU roster is back-filled with kids from Michigan, Illinois, Florida, North Carolina, Arizona, California, Utah, Texas and Georgia. Maybe having to scrounge in untraditional places is a by-product of having a head coach who was previously recruiting for Siena with an assistant from Bellarmine. Let's hope that Bernhardt will have a little more recruiting sizzle.

Look, we all want RU to be competitive in the B1G. Hopefully the staff and kids learned a lesson the other day and look respectable against UVa. For people to suggest that a program that wasn't competitive in the BE is going to be a Top 20 program, challenging for the B1G or getting an at-large in a few years is just a fantasy.

It's Year 4. Isn't it about time for this staff to coach its recruits to wins, competitive losses to Top 25 programs and no more WTF losses?

When has even a regular student come to RU from some of these schools?

We already have kids on the roster from some of those schools, and have gotten kids from others in the past. The best players from those schools? Sure, there is work to do there, but once we win, those kids will be more interested. Still lots to do given the hole we were in from the last coach.

I feel like we have been over this before. Right or wrong, Coach Brecht feels the kids he is getting from those areas are better than the kids he could have gotten in NJ.You may disagree, but that is why he is paid to be the coach. It's his decision. Lastly, look at the roster. You are vastly (check out other rosters of top 5 teams) overstating the amount of kids he is getting from outside of the traditional areas. This isn't the 80's anymore. Lacrosse is being played at a very high level outside of the NE/Baltimore. You are starting to sound like people from the original traditional areas (NY/Baltimore) who looked down at NJ lacrosse. Don't be that guy. If you want to look at it as a case by case basis, let's do that.

Chris Groel from LA came in and started as freshman. Kid is 6'3 and and very athletic. Was a 2x high school All American. He got recruited by Maryland and Drexel. The goalie from Arizona is already the back-up in his first game, another 2x high school AA. Chad Toliver from Georgia has 3 points in his first 2 games, another high school AA. Nicklaus from Florida gets a lot of time. Who exactly are you looking at from outside of NJ questioning? Again, I would suggest you look at the roster. There aren't that many kids from non traditional areas (certainly no more than other teams), but if you are expecting that to end, it isn't. Coach Brecht is always going to recruit those areas, and for one clearly obvious reason. The kids can play with anyone, regardless of where they are from.

I don't look at Richmond as a WTF loss sadly. That team can play and their goalie was really good and we didn't get off the blocks. They are better than St. John's. They have a great coach. They have a lot of support. We laid an egg and should have peformed better, there is no question. And no one is more sick about that than Coach Brecht, I promise you. In many ways though, building a program from scratch is easier than coming into a program that had totally bottomed out and needed to be changed in every way. I say again, if you want to help, donate.

Wow, just including St. Auggie's and St.Peter's as lax school sows that you know little about lacrosse in NJ. Does Rutgers gets kids who go to delbarton? Frankly, no as they are choosing not to go to great public schools like Summit, Lakes, Madison and Mendham so they can go to Delbarton. All of these schools are better than any private school in NJ. What kids is he missing? What would you have him do waste all of his time on kids that do not want to go to the school? That is a poor strategy. He is working on getting the best kids to the school that want to come. You can not force them to go to your school if they do not want to be there.

Isn't that kind of what I just said above but in one sentence? Just kidding LOL

Btw, who is good in Bridgewater this year? Anybody we should be looking at who might be interested?

I have mentioned this before but when you go to a tournament in Bridgewater and play against them, it's like looking at one of the old newsreels of a May Day Parade in the USSR...they just keep coming and coming. LOL

How many teams do you have for each level?

Family -- not saying that a couple of those school are lax powers. My point is that lacrosse is still a rich(er) kids game and those parents are sending the kids to privates, not the local public, and don't want to put a Rutgers decal on the Mercedes SUV.

My post goes back to the post about the growth of lax in NJ and that there are 200 programs. How many D-1 prospects were there in Jersey last year? Rutgers got 4. That doesn't surprise me and I don't think that will change. I have no problem with kids from out of the hotspots because all the recruiting is at the club level and a staff can see everyone at the showcases and summer tournaments. I get that.

Parents want the name brand schools. Some parents will never want their kids to attend the home state U. Wins won't matter. Coaching staffs won't matter. But I think that the kids are a little more open. Sure, they want to play for their dream schools. But they also want to play for certain coaches. You're right, this staff is working to get the best kids that want to come and play for this staff at Rutgers. We'll see how that works in Year 4 and 5.

Rutgers doesn't need Delbarton to be successful. It can win national championships without kids from Delbarton, no problem. What some small percetage of parents will or wont do with their Benz doesn't matter. They aren't needed to accomplish the goals of the program. Is Delbarton and the like even the best in NJ? Didn't Summit and Bridgewater recently win the state tourney? Delbarton would be a nice to have, but that is it. Way more talent out there from top level schools, where we have gotten kids from, not to mention elsewhere.

There are more than enough schools in NJ and the surrounding areas, and emerging, to draw players from, which is what Coach Brecht is doing.

7 of the last 8 TOC winners were public school ML, Summit, BR (all twice) Ridge. The best non senior at BR is Nick Grill who is a Junior and going to Marquette. BB was all over him but the pull of his brother was to strong. There next elite level kid is a 2017 Nick Attansio (Committed to RU). I think several of the best players in NJ this year are going to RU two out of Watchung Hills. Ryan Cunningham is a dynamic Middie big and fast shoots great with both hands. Jack Ayre Goalie has a chance to be the best goalie in the state very good very calm. The other kid is the FO kid from Immaculate who is very good and I feel will help right away. Cali I have been to practice a few times so maybe your are right that Larsen is #2 goalie but, there are several other reasons for him playing on Saturday as well. Obviously, he is good if they felt comfortable enough to move Greenhill to SSDM. I have been around the Skyland Conference a lot so I know for a fact that BB has worked this area hard as well as Morris County. I agree with Cali that we do not need Delby kids to be successful. I would also tell you that the kids give Rutgers a far better shake than the parents so many of these parents see Hopkins and Duke and just start drooling. I had to explain to one parent who was told that all of these schools wanted him to visit, they had no idea that recruiting was going this early, (it was the summer after his freshman year). The kid went down to Rutgers heard the pitch and the parents were really impressed, they said things like I had no idea that Rutgers was like that what a great school. He eliminated schools like Hopkins, UMD, UVA and ND before Rutgers and ultimately he chose Duke but, do not tell me that BB did not do a good job.

Did some quick scanning of other programs and the number of kids from non traditional areas, again. We are on the low end compared to many top programs.

I have to chuckle at the assessment of Brecht's recruiting philosophy
being, "…in general, avoid going after kids with top 15 offers…"

HA! This is
hilarious. Where do people come up with
these things…
