Rutgers panel sets up roadblock to a new athletic center

As I have said many times the status quo is unacceptable because money isn't being expended at a level necessary to successfully compete in a power conference. This is a small time response for a school that wants to brag that they are big time being a part of the B1G.

Barchi's and Rutgers response should be swift but unfortunately they seem so scared to actually publically support athletics that everytime an athletic subject comes up Barchi interjects academics into the discussion. His earlier comments about a year back were scarier and should concern every Rutgers sports fan and donor. My fear of this school just cashing the check and doing the bare minimum to be in the Big 10 is coming to fruition.

Rutgers should not joined the Big 10...if I were other Big 10 members I would be outraged and want Rutgers booted for not only not investing but also the deplorable athletic infrastructure they are bringing to the Big 10

We needed a strong president to lead us into the Big 10 and its not Barchi. If its true he is gone in a year or two then I do not want him making ANY policy decisions involving the future of Rutgers athletics

Killings worth was a self important douche in the 90s.

Reminds me of a New England pseudo intellectual in a tweed coat smoking a pipe. The type that is caricatured on The Family Guy and elsewhere.

Before everybody continues to get their panties in a twist, can somebody explain how much power these fools actually have?

The University Senate is a formal advisory body set up to give advice to the University President and BOG on essentially any issue affecting Rutgers. http://senate.rutgers.edu/About%20the%20Senate.shtml

The real power is limited to:

The Senate shall regularly review, revise and otherwise regulate and legislate those matters specifically assigned to Senate jurisdiction by the Board of Governors in University Regulation 2.2.2.A., which include:establishing minimum standards respecting admission, scholarship and honorsregulating formal relationships among academic units within the Universityrecommending norms for teaching loadsestablishing the University calendar

I have the same question^.

Is this group advisory or an actual authorizing body in the process? They clearly are way out-of-touch with where RU and national universities as a whole are today. Let the group's students transfer to Montclair St if they don't like RU's commitment to an elite conference. The faculty can move on to TCNJ, Rider, etc. How are the alumni selected for the panel?

edit: Do we know if the Athletics "matters" have been specifically assigned to Senate jurisdiction by the Board of Governors (my computer is having problems so I was writing my post as Upstream's follow-up was posted...)
