Rutgers to set tuition rates on Wednesday for school year

This number amazes me. It's over 900% higher than when I went to school. Just for sheets and giggles, I went and grabbed the US inflation rates since my first year of school and calculated the overall increase. And that was 279%.

What year did you go to school? Higher ed inflation has run about 1% higher per annum than CPI, in aggregate.

Ah, the miracle of compound interest! The Rutgers law schools had tuition at about $2000 for in-state students in 1984, when I arrived as a professor. Tuition is now $24,000. There are good reasons why tuition is higher -- we have to provide more student services, and we need to run resource-intensive clinics so that our students can get their feet wet -- but of course that doesn't come close to explaining all of it.

Um, it's in my signature. '81 was my first year, so I pulled the inflation rates for the 36 intervening years and calculated the overall increase on tuition based on those numbers.

I graduated Rutgers College in 1972. Tuition was $400 and fees were $120 per year. I went to Rutgers Law School - Newark (Class of 1975) and tuition was essentially $800 per year. Different times, different era but even by 1972 standards a bargain.

I stand corrected, however, the #'s aren't far off. It's a friggen joke how expensive it is to attend a nj university.

I don't think you'd find in-state expenses at Penn State or Maryland to be much cheaper. Below is Penn State

and here is Maryland

Public university tuition has gotten much higher everywhere, and it is not surprising it is especially high in this region.

We may actually be too low given cost of living

I would actually say that RU is probably on the cheaper side if we did cost of living adjustments and median incomes of state residents.

Also, my prior posts showed it's not higher in this region. A lower cost of living state like Georgia is charging about the same. Texas AM and UC's are higher. I think RU is charging too little on a relative basis. Also, you have to go the the schools website which I found different than your links above.

You should really say any university and not single out NJ or RU. In fact given the cost to live in NJ it should be charging more than some of these other state schools. It's actually a great bargain when compared to going private schools or out state state schools.

The comparison with what is charged for tuition is somewhat misleading. You really need to factor in the general availability of scholarship aid for a "typical" student. I suspect that aid may be more generous in some of the place's with higher tuition.

I suppose one could look at the budget of each of these schools to determine that but I don't think it's that important to the discussion at hand. RU and NJ is not more expensive than many comparable schools for in state tuition even though it probably should be given the cost of living or median incomes. UGA is a prime example.

I am sure there are schools cheaper than RU, but they are of lesser quality. Historically schools like WVU, Coastal Carolina, West Chester PA and some SUNYs have attracted a NJ contingency but moreso students who did not get into RU but did not want to go to say Montclair or Stockton.

I suspect the main reason for the significant tuition increases that new Rutgers students must pay (compared to you older guys) is because the State of New Jersey does not support the schools financially as much as they did in the past (I suspect 30% down to maybe 10%).

Same as in Pennsylvania, lack of support for state Universities. In fact, Pennsylvania ranks 47 out of 50 states in financial support don't know how NJ ranks.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

It's one reason, as it is at many state universities, but it is not the only reason. Keep in mind that private institutions, which receive little or no state aid, have greatly increased their tuitions as well over the last half century. BTW, NJ's level of support is, I believe, about as bad as Pa's, but all states are down from where they were a generation ago. There are simply too many other pressures on the state treasury (e.g. Medicaid, e.g. pensions).

Situation will only get worse for state support as time goes on.

I remember Christie saying (when elected) he was going to address NJ Pension problems.

I think he has done almost nothing (8 years in office) in this regard and the pension costs continue to significantly accelerate.

Pennsylvania has recently changed pensions for new (recently hired) teachers. It is a start.

A public university education is still about 50% less than a private school.

The average debt of a student coming out of Law School is now about $125,000 or more.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!
