Rutgers University leaders are scheduled to decide Wednesday whether to raise tuition and fees for students in the upcoming school year, as the school has for the last several years.

The Board of Governors was scheduled to meet at noon and take a vote after a scheduled 90-minute closed session on the proposed budget for the 2018-2019 school year.

Note two things: first, state support, adjusted for inflation, has dropped 6% since 2014. That figure is even worse when current appropriations are compared to those of the 1990s.

Second, Barchi blames the increase on expected pay raises for faculty and staff. But in fact the university has been stonewalling negotiations, at least on the faculty side. The contract ran out June 30, and Rutgers has not even put an offer on the table. This is typical of how the university does business with the faculty it is always touting.

For the upcoming 2018-2019 academic year, a typical in-state, full-time Arts and Sciences undergraduate at Rutgers University-New Brunswick will be billed $14,975 in combined tuition and mandatory student fees in 2018-2019, an increase of 2.3 percent. For such a student living on campus, total charges (tuition, fees, room and board) will increase to $27,681, up 2.18 percent from last year.
So this is 10 times what I paid my freshman year.
