Rutgers-USC: Looking at the Stats You Might Have Thought Rutgers Had Won

Rutgers had 17 more shots than USC.
Rutgers won points off turnovers 31-7
Rutgers even won points in the paint 48-36
Rutgers won offensive rebounding 15-10 and lost overall rebounding 39-38
Second chance points were even at 12 each
Rutgers won turnovers 21-12; blocks, 5-0; steals 9-6; bench points, 32-5.
And this is after the 2nd OT which didn't go well.

Guess it all came down to shooting efficiency which USC won 51.7% to 42.9% on FG and 43.5% to 20.0% on 3 pointers.

Of course, they almost did win, and I think they would have if Ace hadn't fouled out in regulation.

Every fan could list the reasons for this loss and similar ones from preceding games.Mediocrity has become the norm and the only thing changing is the player names.

The most critical stat which Rutgers lost was Coaching.

14-16 2023-2024 awful offense and great defense
14-16 2024-2025 good offense and bad defense

Big difference, same result

We don't actually have a good offense though. Everyone keeps saying it but it's not exactly true.

We're #49 in offensive efficiency.
But that's only 11th in the Big Ten.

Having Jwill, Davis, Derkack and Grant as significant players isn't leaning into offense.

Correct.....if we are in a power conference our offense should be called average to slightly below average.

An adjective has yet to be invented to describe last year's offense

All great stats but it is the intangibles that often decide the game. Besides the obvious Jeremiah missing the 2 foul shots and also missing the 3 with a great pass from Dylan , or badly missing a drive off the backboard , Jeremiah actually hustled his ass off, causing jump balls and stealing balls from drivers like Claude.

But the play of the day and to me it is unforgivable was made or should I say not made by JMike. Jeremiah swipes at the ball for a steal with 20 seconds left and a scrum ensued . But first the ball is right at JMike ‘s feet. Instead of diving on the ball and getting the jump ball since we had the possession arrow , he slowly leaned over allowing USC guy to grab the ball and the refs granted him the timeout. That play is un forgive able to me. The lack of understanding of the moment and lack of full intensity is the difference between a winning high IQ player and JMike. His overall game was lousy yesterday but that 1 play had me furious.
Not sure the Pike bashers had anything to bash, as he switched defenses, went to the press to get us back in the game , managed ACE’s foul trouble the best it could be , and put all our guys in position to win. Tyson had a good game but missing the corner 3 on that great pass from Dylan could have been a dager so that it didn’t come down to the last minute.
The failure of the portal as Jordan , Zach and PJ either sat or played just a few minutes and were not impactful except negatively , was on full display. Only Tyson came up big but his inconsistency all year , and his lousy defense , turns out to be another failure.
The returners , Jeremiah , JMike and Manny were underwhelming to say the least. Jeremiah had a good defensive game but his missing the driving layup badly where Lathan was there for a rebound if he would have gotten it to the rim , his 2 missed foul shots that would have put us up 4 and likely sealed it , and his miss of the 3 getting that perfect pass from Dylan was just typical of our supporting cast this year. JMike was lousy overall and will never fight over a screen and his failure to make the key play of the game will be a forever negative in my mind thinking of him. Manny only a few minutes so not adding much which was in line with his year long production even before his injury.

I see BAC and Green blaming Dylan for allowing Claude , one of the best drivers in the country , to beat him for the tying bucket , and not mentioning ACE was not there as a rim protector is amusing. When Dylan drives by every player in the BiG 10 and around the country and scores at will at the rim , are they saying how terrible the defenders are ? No. Stated earlier in this thread to bash Dylan and)( Ace all other times) which is the MO of those two , denigrating our one and dones. How pathetic.

Or all the fans who drove Simpson outta town. Just as good as JWill defensively and better than JMike and would have hit foul shots.

Be careful what you wish for, may come back to haunt you.

watch the replay...at the end of the game that is embarrassing defense...stakes were high there

also please tell me why pike has acuff inbounding to J will 2x in a row...lucky we got timeout where we shouldnt and then does it again. no harper around and he should have the ball there...why the **** was the ball in JWills hand 45 seconds left in regulation and then again in overtime with the 3

Once again, you win if you don't give up 50+% shooting. 6th time in 8 games allowing over 50%, 5th in those 8 allowing 40% + three point shooting. Believe we were outrebounded in all 8 as well.

Pike never should have had Ace in the game at the end of the first half . Protect him and he finishes the game and OT. Could have thrown the ball to him up high instead of Jwill to take those free throws.

1:10 or so up 4 end of regulation Pike has Acuff with the ball who hands off to Jwill. Jwill dribbles out the clock and gets off a terrible shot. Neither Ace or Dylan who was unstoppable touched the ball.

Those two coaching inept decisions cost us the game. Should never have been on OT.

I know you love the guy but he was awful at St. Joes too. Shot 25% (7-28) the last 5 games averaging 5 ppg. Yes, he played defense but he refused to fill a role, which JMike finally has.

we are currently ranked 157th in scoring, thats not good at all
that isn't a metric that says everything. Assuming everyone plays at the exact same tempo 157th isn't bad, it's average when you consider the defenses we face.

You need to use adjusted defensive efficiency because it factors in tempo and opponent.

You can't compare our scoring with a team that plays in the NEC. We would score 10+ PPG more in conference playing in NEC over B1G

Dylan was unstoppable? Did you see the final play of regulation? Dylan stopped himself a few times. Shot like 2 for his last 8 and was 1-8 from 3, and added 5 TO's. Dylan played well, but once again, wasn't the best performing freshman on the floor.

well it must say something because we lost more than we won
This team needed to score 5 points more per game (given opponent and tempo) and needed to give up 5 points less per game.

Having said that we were bad almost exclusively because of D, but based on the way the team was built we needed to score more and couldn't improve enough defensively to be more than below average

Needed to be
Elite offense 20th or better
Below average defensively 75th or better

Please, please don't ever go into coaching or even player evaluation!

I am not sure what your beef with Harper is.

Whether or not he was the best player out there last night, he was the one player being forced to carry his team on his back. He was the most-feared player.

USC knew who they had to slow down, and he was the guy on whom they concentrated. He did have a bad shooting night for him, but somehow he still managed to score in the mid-20's - as a freshman.

It was clear that he was completely out of gas by the second overtime and was struggling as the end of regulation approached because he expended so much energy, on defense as well as offense. His legs were gone.

As the end of regulation approached, he was looking at several guys trying to defend him - hence the situation in the first overtime when Williams had no one within 10 feet of him for that brick of a 3-point shot for the win.

Your boy Bailey was by then sitting on the bench, so that awesome potential you love was useless.

I love the kid, obviously. He is a star who is willing to do all the little things and be a good teammate. Bailey is also a good teammate, but his game is so much less sophisticated than Harper's.

I am going to miss immensely watching both. If only they had had a better supporting cast this year, but they didn't.

Agree Dylan would have been preferable but Dylan has missed late foul shots this year as well. Pike probably didn’t think his senior was going Miss not 1 but 2 foul shots. Jeremiah has made and missed big foul shots before. Never thought he was going miss 2 of them. I thought he was having a heck of a defensive second half before the last minute where he killed us offensively with his 3 last plays( 2 and the foul shots ).
Suprised you haven’t mentioned the play of the game . J Mike’s lazy lean over and not diving on the floor for the loose ball caused by Jeremiah. That to me is unforgivable and shows what a low IQ non winning play he was. We get that loose ball with 19 seconds left , we win the game . Then I don’t have to hear you whine about Dylan getting beat by Claude , one of the best drivers inthe college game. Alert ; Pike didn’t get a rim protector that might have been the cause of this disappointing season and just our luck ACE fouled out and wasn’t available to block the shot.

You blaming Pike for ACE’s third foul is ridiculous as was the call. He got second and third within a minute of each other. We were down first half and desperately needed ACE to come alive. Your Monday morning take is bad to be in line with your Pike hate.
What game were you watching in last 2 minutes. ??ACE had already fouled out with 3 minutes left so how was he going to get the ball with 1:10? Are you hitting the bottle ? Dylan touched the ball but the minute he tried to penetrate he was doubled and triple teamed. That is why he made 3 awesome passes , One to Acuff in the corner that would have been the dagger and put us up 5 if he made it . One to Grant for a layup , and one to Jeremiah who with no one within 10 feet of him , he couldn’t hit the game winner.
Really not sure about what you are saying having the ball on Dylan or ACE’s hands down the stretch.
This game was not a game to criticize Pike. He changed defenses , went to the press to get us back in the game , managed ACE’s fouls , almost all of them silly freshman fouls , until 3 minutes on the game and had the team up 4 under a minute. Then the most unforgivable play of the day , when JMike causally bent over on the loose ball swipe by Jeremiah , instead of diving for the ball and getting the tie up with 19 seconds. That was such a low IQ play from a non winning player and unforgivable for me.

I have zero beef w Harper. No doubt he was our best player, both last night and this year. That doesn't mean he was unstoppable or didn't make mistakes down the stretch. Nothing I said now incorrect. I thought Tyler played better. More within himself. Dylan makes questionable decisions at times.
Not sure why you turned my comment into a Bailey / Harper referendum, no one mentions Bailey. Weird.

Yeah that made no sense to me but I have not seen ONE screen the entire year when we have inbounded in the backcourt. It’s players just running to the ball.
We could just had Dylan post his guy up and throw him the ball and it would have been game over

Our shooting was rancid. The first half was horrendous.

Good post. Dylan went 10-29 from the field. Literally anyone on the team could have posted 1-8 from 3, 9-21 on FGs. He just had a bad night and no legs by the 2nd OT. The whole D collapsed on Dylan on the last play, a complete wall in the paint, when he chucked to JWill for a wide, wide open 3 attempt.

Down the stretch he got what ever he wanted going to the basket. Either way not letting him or Ace touch the ball with a minute to go in the game is criminal and just another example of how bad Pike is

To be honest Bac, aside from Lathan, everyone else on the team is about the same from the FT line. All 70% shooters.

You’re wrong on so many levels! First you have to pull Ace and protect him from himself. Pike did not and he fouled out and missed the last 30 sec of regulation and all of the OT’s . Pike did it his way and was wrong .

Ace did NOT foul out with 3 min left your lost and clearly drinking way way way too much or just not smart. Ace fouling out when he could have been part of the last inbound and instead of Jwill he is shooting the free throws.

I just re watched the end of regulation Jwill after dribbling out the clock drove and took a horrible shot with 45.6 sec left on the game . Once again Dylan nor Ace(in the game) touched the ball.

Dylan is on the strong side elbows just outside the 3 point line . Ace STILL not fouled out is in the corner outside the 3 point line and dives to the basket on Jwill’s horrible drive. Your lost !!!

The whole D collapsed on Dylan on the last play, a complete wall in the paint, when he chucked to JWill for a wide, wide open 3 attempt.
I know you were agreeing with my post. But Dylan was 9-21 overall , 1-8 from 3 , and 8-8 from the line. That means he was 8-13 from 2 point range. He just missed a few threes late with no legs in the second OT that made his shooting % go below 50%. He did not take 29 shots

I stand corrected on that.

I will wait for your apology once you realize how wrong you were. Once you know who was and was not in the game when then get back to me.

Oh no Monday morning said it real time.

Either way Pike is finished
