Rutgers vs Indiana / Game Thread

RU is better off taking the first available good look and living with the results....anything else results in a turnover.

I wanted to bump this because I think it makes a lot of sense. I was actually discussing this with my buddy after the last game.

We finally have a full week off, and a home game. Want to see actual free throw shooting, and solid passing, against Nebraska. Otherwise Pike needs to start answering some questions.

Must say, these BTN announcers were the most Rutgers homer announcers I've ever heard ... I mean more than Lucas and Carlin. It was refreshing to listen to! It was even getting ridiculous at some points, where Indiana was clearly better and they said something like "well Rutgers almost could have made that play there, if not for the athleticism of [IU player] that would have been a great play. Lots to be excited for. Steve P is doing a great job." It was great haha
But would he should have said when Sa got blocked that last time was "hasn't he ever heard of a pump fake?"

Why pick on Williams when the team lacks shooters at every position.

True. Isn't he the one guy who was recruited to be a shooter ? Just wonder how much better Corey could be if we had another guard to handle the ball and open up the court.

I have no doubt that Pike and Hobbs are making the corrections, we just lack the IQ right now. And it is possible to pass the ball to a covered guy because there is always a place the offensive guy can receive the ball. We just don't have the passers with vision or skill.
I've seen Eugene throw the ball to a triple teamed post 3-4 times already. When I say covered..I mean guys getting fronted , etc...but yeah..All about knowing what the frack you are doing and HOW to make a pass. See Johnson make a bounce pass? Two handed slam from over his head like some 3rd grade girl just learning.

I don't enjoy announcers feeling sorry for Rutgers. Its really a indirect way of saying Rutgers doesn't belong on the court with Indiana which would be a common refrain from announcers at other schools.Bottom line Rutgers must get better but how they do it without better talent is a mystery to me..

respectfully disagree, thats what we saw from Jordans team, I think if the shots arent falling, all that happens is the team gets burned in transition and RU loses by 40, RU does not have the horses to run a track meet with Indiana, they will make you pay. I realize that the half court offense sucks but thats up to the coaching staff to make it better

They weren't "feeling sorry" for Rutgers ... they were talking about us like we were a final four team. Complimenting everything we did and talking up our players, saying how hard a time Indiana was having with us in certain aspects. And they may not be wrong. If we didn't throw the ball away 10 times and spot Indiana 20 pts between that and free throw bricks, we would have had a game with the hoosiers

Turnovers and missed free throws were the death knell for Rutgers in this game. Officiating had little to do with it.
^^It's as simple as this. If we shoot 65% from the line (which is still pretty sad), we'd have another 6 or 7 points (I didn't see the stat line or I'd've posted the exact number). And if we turn the ball over not only fewer times but turnovers that also weren't the equivalent of fast-break outlet passes for IU, we could have won the game. There were at least 8 fast break points we just handed to them without the defense being able to get back, and the other turnovers resulted in another 10 points or so. Frustrating when we repeatedly beat ourselves on things that at this level we shouldn't be doing.

Indiana showed me nothing today. They might be a first day knockout in the Big 10 tourney and the NCAA tourney. We literally handed them the game. Simple passes, the lack of bounce passes, the lack of leading our guards on back door cuts and throwing it in the only spot where the defender can make a play, the ridiculous dribble hand offs with our bigs handling the ball has to stop and eliminated from the play book. The high low is there but cannot be executed , either over thrown; thrown to other team; or failure to dunk the ball when it works allowing the block;and when fouled failure to convert at the line, which is like a turnover.
Foul shooting what else is there to say! The misses not only costs points, which we desperately need to get to 65-70 a game , but fails to stop a run and mentally prevents us from keeping the deficit under double digits to give us a chance down the stretch. Deshawn is one thing but Corey and CJ missing them is so frustrating.

I still root hard for the guys, but the soft passing when the defender is right there making a break on the ball before the pass is let go (!) drives me nuts. I understand good defenders will lull you to sleep or sneak up from behind once in a while, but we pass the ball so softly and lazily when the passer is staring right at the defender on the perimeter. That shit is just crazy. Combine that with the missed free throws, and we kill ourselves. Pike is putting us in position to win, or at least keep games to single digits, and for some reason we just give it away.

I'll keep rooting for my team and look for improvement, and when we get good, which will happen even if it takes ten more years, it will feel good. And I guarantee it that when this happens we will be shooting over 70% from the line, averaging at most 8 TOs per game, and making at least four 3's per game.

If Corey wants to play in the NBA or Europe he has to work on his free throw form pronto.

Why the hell not Ra, I'm game. What's another decade in the grand scheme of things when you've already been waiting for a 1/4 century. See you in 2027, I'll buy you a beer and we can race our wheel chairs around the RAC, we should be kicking ass and taking names by then.

I can definitely appreciate and understand your concerns and doubts. I share them.

I would welcome trying this a bit...i am not advocating a complete shift to this approach as i dont want to give up on some of the principles which i believe coach is looking to instill. But i think we need to be more creative and try to get some more offense. I am not naive to our limitations...but i would welcome some adjustments.

Cant hurt more than what we are seeing, imho...

Oh hell yes!! And consider this my formal announcement about our future race--don't try getting out of it, because...

No problem with officiating
I thought in the first half with Indiana down a lot that the officials gave them a lot of help. Uneven application of calls. What was a call in their favor was ignored for us. Its not that a foul call was wrong.. it was more a case of not making the same call on the other end.

This isn't a rebuild.. It's a total tear down then rebuild.

Just like football.[/QUOte
I view the last 25 plus years as rebuild that has turned out to be a nightmare with different head coaches not helping the cause.
