Grades (after typing it and reading it over it may seem a bit harsh, but believe me, I was INCREDIBLY proud of how they fought all night):

125: Sean McCabe: C-. Hey, if you're going to get destroyed, at least keep it to four points. Good job doing that.
133: Scott DelVecchio: B. Look, he didn't wrestle Clark, but that's not his fault. What was disappointing was not being able to get that last shot in.
141: Anthony Ashnault: A-. Dziewa never really shot, but Ash slipped up and should have been caught. What Dziewa did in that match is what I would get frustrated from watching a guy like Mason. Otherwise, what can I say that hasn't been said yet? Ash is really, really good. Never out of a match until it's over.
149: Ken Theobold: C. He just didn't look good tonight.
157: Anthony Perrotti: B-. Nobody will agree with me here, but he had a chance to win that match down late and he took it. The score could have easily been closer if he takes a different approach after going down. Either way, it's a loss to a guy he probably could have beat.
165: Nick Gravina: C+. Just don't know what to think of this kid. He did get a takedown. He's young. I just don't know what to make of him.
174: Phil Bakuckas: B. Lost, but showed he could really stay with the guy.
184: Hayden Hrymack: D. Opponent almost defensive pinned himself, but came back to win. Hrymack needs to find a way to make his size an advantage instead of a disadvantage.
197: Andrew Campolattano: B-. Showed some promise and showed just how rusty he is. Escaped having to wrestle against Burak.
285: Billy Smith: C+. Can't really fault the guy on anything. Telford is just really, really good, and fills out 285 to a T.
Perrotti a B- for losing to an unranked Kelly and Smith a C+ for losing to the #1 ranked guy? What type of curve are you working with?

Anything higher than a D for Perrotti is generous, IMO.

Generally agree with everything else.

Re: remember Wrestling on BTN Tonight at 8pm

I love this board's enthusiasm for wrestling. I wish the gopher's board had that. I guess all of our wrestling fans are on the guillotine board which is too insular and really doesnt attract outside interest. Iowa is tough and I hate them. I hope you guys joined me in that dislike. We shall avenge your loss later this month.

Re: remember Wrestling on BTN Tonight at 8pm

Is 5-6 thousand people a good turn out for a B1G wrestling match?

The top schools attendance wise average 3-5k attendance but that includes non conference. Iowa averaged 9,000 per home dual but they are an outlier. Minnesota was #3 with around 3500. For big matches obviously that number increases.

Re: remember Wrestling on BTN Tonight at 8pm

Thanks - the Rutgers attendance of 5,420 was reported a record. Not sure what they usually got before Iowa.

Re: remember Wrestling on BTN Tonight at 8pm

I enjoyed the hell out of that even though we didn't win. I knew NJ wrestling was good and I've followed R team like all teams but having exposure like this on BTN is incredible! I think I'm not the only one here who really discoverd what college wrestling was all about. I admit I've heard about Iowa wrestling mainly from UFC and then-champion Matt Hughes so I was curious to see what the big deal about them was. Now I know.

Great turnout and more Proof that there is support for RU!!!!

I don't see every match, but every time I see Smith I wonder how much of an influence Konrad Dudziak is having with him. Smith wrestles the same style Dudziak did, but without the same results.

And is the pornstache a thing going around college wrestling?

Welcome to the B1G. We all heard the same bad words from Jim Gibbons (the TV color guy). The crowd looked great last night on BTN.

I agree with everything AZcheif32 brought up. I would add that our Kelly, our 157 lber, is not flashy or highly rated but is a tough wrestler. So, a lot like like the 141 lb match for us, our wrestler didn't lose to a slouch (I understand Ashnault is highly rated and Kelly is not. I think AA is a top 5 finisher in March and Kelly, is hoping for top 8).

Good luck with the rest of the season.

Congrats on a packed house...great for our sport. New Jersey is a high school hot bed with a lot of fans. With Rutgers in the B1G, I think many of these top kids in the NY, NJ, and PA area will give Rutgers a second look. Good match tonight, relatively speaking. You all have a stud in Ashnault and I think he has a decent chance to AA in a tough weight. Once Camp gets his tank, he will give guys some trouble and your HWY shows promise too. Good luck the rest of the way.

Some nice recaps of the individual matches. 141 was our best and 157 the most disappointing. I understand Telford is good and do not see every match, but I wonder if Smith has enough offense to be an AA. We really struggled at 125, 149, 165 and 184. Not sure Phil would have scored if they wrestled for 10 minutes but I thought he competed well against a quality opponent. Good wins at 133 and 197 but you need to recognize that Iowa chose to send out the second team. Good job by those who attended in person. While Iowa is top ranked there are going to be several other nights like this and we just need to keep improving individually and as a team

Re: Potential matchups v Iowa Wrestling

Our head coach is messing with the fans by continuing to send out the back up 197lber.

Anybody have a link to all the Midlands final results?

Also, why wouldn't their 197 be wrestling if he just wrestled Midlands? I must have missed something.

direct link to Midland brackets

Re: remember Wrestling on BTN Tonight at 8pm

Haha, I hope someone has a recording of that exchange. How appropriate for RUs and NJs first B1G match lol

Frankie used to volunteer coach for RU and he would go with Goodale to do clinics. I don't now if he is still volunteering.

Re: remember Wrestling on BTN Tonight at 8pm

Also at the match was Screwey Louie Lazzeri , Marco Battaglia, and Coach 1-0 Flood with his son.

Hudson- that is a great observation. I'm starting to get nervous about Billy's chances of getting on the podium. Goody alluded to those concerns during the post match pressure about how he almost seems content to just keep it close vs. the top guys. I'm sure that's not what it is, but it appears that way at times. He needs a signature win under his belt to get his confidence going. AA was a perfect example of keeping it close then exploding on offense near the end to seize the match. I would have liked to see that aggressiveness from Billy late in the 3rd.

SMH about Perrotti and Theo looked over matched. I expected to see more aggressiveness from both of those guys.

Great crowd overall. It's nice to finally be in the big time. New Jersey wrestling deserves it. But like SG said, now it's time to get our hands raised.

Re: remember Wrestling on BTN Tonight at 8pm

Kjb, do you have a link for that? Surprises me that we are only 8th, given team and individual rankings which seem to put us at least top 5 or so. Thanks for the dialogue, less people are interested in wrestling than in the old days.

I think you will see a change amongst your fans since you are now in the cream of the crop conference for wrestling. Shoot, look at people on this board tonight. I thought it was awesome that people got excited about it.

As an FYI, the Iowa wrestling board is absolutely fantastic. I usually lurk there but sometimes post. The Penn State wrestling board is awesome too.

I actually signed up for BTN Plus so I would have access to VT, OSU and RU. All three fall within the month from when I signed up.

See link - not an exact science but good enough.

Re: remember Wrestling on BTN Tonight at 8pm

From FLO four years ago:

I think the # of NCAA qualifiers this year by home state makes a pretty strong argument for PA:Pennsylvania (52)Ohio (33)New Jersey (24)New York (23)California (17)Illinois (17)Michigan (16)Iowa (14)Missouri (13)Colorado (10)Minnesota (10)Wisconsin (8)Florida (7)Maryland (7)Virginia (7)Washington (7)Indiana (6)Utah (6)Georgia (5)Kansas (4)North Carolina (4)Oklahoma (4)Oregon (4)Idaho (3)Montana (3)Texas (3)Delaware (2)Louisiana (2)Massachusetts (2)South Dakota (2)Wyoming (2)

**********
If you look at last year, it was pretty similar. I believe PA actually did better. I went through and counted them and IIRC PA had a # somewhere in the 60s. They represented ~25% of NCAA qualifiers.

Re: remember Wrestling on BTN Tonight at 8pm

Thanks. Actually saw that link you posted. The last post show NJ at #3, but I agree that PA's depth of great wrestlers seems to be unparalleled.

Put it this way: Okahoma finished 10th in attendance last year at around, IIRC, 1450 or so per match. We expected to blow that away this season thanks to Iowa, PSU, Minny, and OSU, all at home.
