Sammy Alvarez

Good for him. Hope it works out. Crazy to think that he’s in year 5 of college, has over 50 career wins, and for one reason or another has never wrestled an NCAA tournament match.

It’s crazy to me that his fresh year he was toe to toe w RBY, beat ridge Lovett and even had that run to win Southern Scuffle… who would have predicted what happens after..

I hope Sammy beats every wrestler he faces (Except if it is a RU wrestler.
I am glad he seems to be on the path for a chance at AA.
Is Sammy at 141 or 149?

Why does it feel like there’s some bad blood? Did we leave on bad terms wit Sammy? And seems likes he, or his posters, thinks the well wishes for him are fake idk…
He’s 149, just entered flo rankings at #25

A few years ago I heard from someone close enough to the program that Sammy chose to go 133, he struggled to do it because of some lifestyle choices, and the coaches told him that if he can’t commit to making the weight he chose then he should evaluate whether or not he wants to be part of the team. That rumor got refuted here but as time goes on it’s looks more and more true.

I don’t think any real fans hold anything against him, but for some reason his biggest supporters hold a grudge against Rutgers. Don’t really get why. It’s not like Rutgers didn’t give him 2, 3, 4 chances while he messed many of them up on his own. Unless there’s more to the story.

He mighta chose 133 bc at that time we had suriano 125, Seabass 141, but damn did I wish Sammy woulda went 149 if 33 is too tough.. I hate when wrestlers gotta suck down so much where wrestling stops being fun…

Should have redshirted in 2022 after realizing it was too difficult to make 133. Pretty sure he said at the time he wanted to make the cut to 125 too. Kind of ridiculous.

Yeah I remember that too.. him thinking he can make 125… wild

I think he’s saying look above there’s more to the story
From what I understand, yes. I liked Sammy while he was here but after he left, I remember (preumably) him sounding off here and making himself look foolish/possibly disrespecting the program too?. Again, thats presuming it actually was him which seemed like a very reasonable assumption. I'd look up the old thread but I dont want to waste any more time on this. I'm not willing to spread gossip though. I'll give Mr. Boondingle the opportunity to discuss it when he or another of these weird, new popup names visits this thread...and hopefully like an adult.

Grow up pal

Way to go, Sammy.

I enjoyed watching that fellow in AC...

ETA: Sammy and Robert Howard are two of NJ's best ever. I was hosting my friends from Maryland, and impressing them with high school wrestling in my adopted state of NJ when we watched the Alvarez-Howard state final live.

I'm hoping to see both these guys make their mark on the NCAA. Not too late...

Not sure extent of Howard’s inj but even if he’s healthy not sure if he beats Davis.. that and PSU just reloaded wit some pretty good light weights… Sammy.. don’t think.. he’s starting vs Iowa.. he’s in a roster battle rn

Thank you, KidDagger.

It's amazing how difficult and competitive college wrestling is...

Howard will probably be at Rider next season. No way he makes the PSU roster. The chance has passed.

Sammy probably shouldn't have jumped to OKST. Doesn't appear that he'll wrestle again, unless they put him in the Big12 tournament. Not sure why they would, when they have a (just as) talented freshmen to get the experience.

Can't see a reason they would go with him in the post season since they just sent out Jordan Williams in the Iowa dual (which is obviously a huge match up for them) and he just won. Sammy hasn't wrestled in over a month as well, seems like he passed over for good unfortunately.

What makes you think Howard will go to Rider? Woulda thought he felt too good to wrestle at schools like that… I woulda guessed he just stays at PSU or retires bc of the injuries.

Hmm seems like Jordan Williams(top 10 p4p recruit fresh) got the start at 149 and won over his former teammate, Iowa transfer, Voinovich… looking more likely he will represent okie state in post season.. not sure if this is Sammy’s last season…

And that’s why he and his father shouldn’t have burned bridges on his way to Penn St. Granted 125 isn’t an open spot on our roster for the foreseeable future but if it was I bet he would be begging to come here.

The Rider comment is more of a joke. Not inside intel. Although, it probably wouldn't be a bad move if he wanted to compete still. He's got like 3 or 4 more years of eligibility. PSU ain't in the cards. Braeden and Sealy and I think Jax Forest? coming in

Yeah 3 more years eligibility for Howard.. but Davis has 3 more available too and Nagao 2 more after this year.. Sealy is coming in the middle weights.. JaX Forrest and Bo Basset uncommitted.. already beating elite d1 guys as hs soph.. lol

PSU got Lilledhal, whom I think is #1 p4p recruit.. he will go 125/33 coming in and also the Gibson brothers… going to be a logjam for sure..

Sammy has another of eligibility as a grad school student due to Covid. Interesting to say the least. Guess on where he has his last dance at is a great question.

Maybe Sammy just stays at okie state if he chooses to wrestle.. looking up and down their lineup, if he can’t beat Williams for 149.. then his best shot to start would be to bump up to 174…. Or suck all the way down to 133 again(lol) once Fix graduates…

Sammy does not have another year left unless he somehow qualifies for a medical for the 2022 season(his last competition was 12/29). He competed in 2020 as a frosh, 2021 as a soph(covid year) 2022 as a soph, 2023 as a junior and 2024 as a senior. So unless he gets a medical his career is over.
