Schiano needs more support to Win Championships

He’s not getting us over the hump, Al

Great motivator and teacher of young men, terrific program builder, and somebody else would want my son to play for

But his ceiling is a consistent eight wins
Think of Kirk Firenz at Iowa - maybe the occasional nine or 10 season, but we will not be elite under him
Schiano needs to be a better game day coach for Rutgers to reach elite status.

Wrong Al. The biggest difference is all those schools have decades of championships and actual winning success.

Welcome to the club.

Your correct. And that’s why Cali isn’t necessarily wrong but for today we 100% for sure still need a program builder for the foreseeable future. And by the way - many “winning” coaches wouldn’t be any good at program building. Anyone who thinks Day would be a slam dunk to be able turn around a basement feeder program is clueless.

Why do those schools have decades of championships and actual winning success? Because someone wrote a check! Recruits didn’t just fall out of a tree.

Our fans have never similarly invested in the football program. This is why we struggle to recruit. Our recruiting class mostly consists of out of state kids, as most of the best Jersey kids head elsewhere.

We all know them when we see them.
While it’s nice to dream, the reality is This is a perennial pinstripe bowl or similar type program.
The Citrus Bowl is probably the best we can do, with a very longshot to make the playoffs.

The inspiration to be better is the impetus behind this thread. That will require better recruiting , which would be facilitated with financial support.

Understood- but we still need to get one of these wins at some point. We are no longer a doormat and have the capability to pull off an upset. Even last year- how well we played against OSU says that we have the talent that if everything breaks right for us and everything wrong for them...or at least a couple of big turnovers- then a great HC finds a way to find a win like that every once in a while.

The way Greg has built the team- getting mid to high 3 star and some low 4 star players out of HS and the ability to keep them 3-4 years and fill in the gaps with the really smart transfers...we are getting to a point a big upset should happen soon.
happens this year i think

Considering our talent level?
Minimum 9 wins at least?

Or maybe 8-4?
Im not sure. The expectation seems to keep changing.

Regardless, "injuries are part of the game" so a team more talented than USC and OSU should have pretty high expectations.

Post in thread 'GREATEST Rutgers Football Team EVER Assembled' https://rutgers.forums.rivals.com/t...tball-team-ever-assembled.279346/post-6868940
It may be a great season if we can stay healthy. If we can’t, then we simply have to accept that our performance won’t be as good. We don’t have the ability to effectively replace injured players, though overall talent and depth is improved. This is likely a 7-8 Win Team with a chance at 10 Wins.

This season is going to depend on health and...does someone really replace KM's production and does AK and the WR's step it up to a different level.

We also need that signature game where we can say that GS just outcoached the other guy.

If he's worth anything he will roll up his sleeves and get to work on fundraising. Then he will hold the next football coach that he and his AD hires to some winning standard.

As of today, GS isn't walking on water like some here and he thought he was. A tale as old as time- Presidents want their own hires and so do AD's. Schiano wasn't on the clock before but he's going to be now. Benchmarks need to be communicated and held to.

GS was at Ohio St. for two years. The first being Co DC with Fickell who had the D humming. Then he was given the reigns completely and I wouldn't say imploded but it was woefully below OSU standards including a 49-20 loss to Purdue- once again a modern offense befuddles him. Along with that came getting gashed by Maryland for 51. No one at OSU was unhappy to see him go as DC. If we are being honest, another year like that and he probably would have been fired.

He's a program builder. He's not a winner. There is a

10 wins would probably mean that they took one game out of the Oregon/Penn State/Ohio State gauntlet and avoided the usual 2 WTF losses.

His defense wasn’t just Meh. He had a good defense, two out of three years. The last year the defense slipped due to graduation, and it took time for the new kids to acclimate. The new President will take one look at our donation levels and he’ll realize what the real problem is and that he isn’t at LSU anymore. Schiano will continue to do a great job for us.

Al Football is just a game.

Rutgers is a wonderful University and LSU should be looking at what Rutgers has accomplished and try to emulate them.

Consider the really important accomplishments that Rutgers has achieved compared to LSU.

National Science Foundation Ranking of Universities by R&D expenditures:

Rutgers: Rank #42 with $831. million annual R&D
LSU: Rank #83 with $384. million annual R&D

Ranking of Schools by Endowment:

Rutgers: Rank #30 Public with $2.183 Billion Endowment
LSU: Rank #50 Public with $1.138 Billion Endowment

I think LSU needs more fan and public contributions to catch up to Rutgers.

Rutgers got a great new President and he is coming to a great University.

As much as I loved KM, I thought the offensive was better with AR/JB combo when he was out. Passing game seemed better at the time to account for no Kyle.

The question is can that continue over a whole season. Let’s hope it does with the new RB in the mix as well.

The wildcard is going to be adjustment on the OL for the loss of Pierce. In both run and pass protection.

Football is more than a game. It’s an obsession. There’s no reason why Rutgers can’t be more like Michigan, a school which attracts the best students from across America, and combines great athletics and great academics, and has a bigger endowment. We’ve got the academics down. Great athletics will make Rutgers a more fun place to be.

I hope for 6 wins and a minor bowl as the most we can expect this season! The schedule is just too tough.

Once again, look at the $$$$. It’s David vs Goliath.

Maybe the problem is that the obsession is out of control.

The next 10-15 years universities/colleges will see a significant loss of money due to the Baby Bust Generation.

Schools will close, cut programs increase tuition because of the lack of tuition paying students.

Universities will run to state legislatures pleading for more funding.

The general public will not want tax increases and state legislators under constituent pressure begin to look at money wasted on athletic programs across the nation. Coaches salaries, athletic facilities, paying millions for recruits when the general public is having a hard time affording college for their kids.

Penn State today reveled some of the facility design for the $700 million upgrades to Beaver Stadium which will feature much more Club Seating. Again Beaver Stadium will only be used 7 times per year.

At the same time Penn State will be asking for public comment on closing 7 Branch Campuses across the state because they cannot afford to keep them open.

The state representatives in the districts that are affected are hearing the criticism from the communities that are impacted.

Just the start of the Baby Bust Generation financial impact on colleges.

Enjoy the football game even if your team ends up 7-5.

I will be enjoying Pitt football games in the comfort of Club Seating at Acrisure Stadium.

If Pitt would end up 7-5 and go to a Bowl Game that would be great.

In the new era of pay to play (NIL) I don't actually care who wins a National Championship.

If I want to see professional athletes compete, I'll just go watch a Steeler Game in the comfort of Club Seating at Acrisure Stadium.

Good luck in football this year.

Again who cares about Penn State and Pitt for that matter on this board? The constant Pitt is better than everyone gets old.

Lots of holes filled by lower conference kids this year. Lewis and Bailey were going to have big years till their injuries last year. Powell was supposed to be healed, but never was 100%. Toure, our best defensive player, was injured and didn’t contribute. These were huge losses that we didn’t adequately replace. Replacement LBers struggled for much of last year.

Well, if we had a fieldhouse and more money, Ben Black would have caught the perfectly thrown pass that bounced off his hands against Nebraska for a TD, Schiano wouldn't have called an ill advised timeout before a 50 plus yard field goal attempt into a stiff wind against Illinois, resulting an a walk off 40 yard catch and run TD, and they wouldn't have blown a 17 point lead against KSU when they made no adjustments and the defense got shredded like Enron's financials. That's 10-3 right there. 🙂

If Rutgers had a nicer/more centralized campus, it would have already been there. The campus experience causes a lot of negativity in the state/recruiting. It’s getting better but will never be like the guys we are chasing (Michigan, PSU, etc.).

Don’t forget Pierce. Probably the biggest hole of all.

Aside from this, the schedule isn’t remotely comparable. We didn’t end up beating USC, UCLA , Nebraska or Wisconsin but the pre season outlook in terms of our odds of beating 2 of them were way better than the odds of beating 2 of OSU, PSU, Oregon or Iowa who replace them. We went 2-1 vs Washington, Minny and Illinois at home. That’s nice, but this year we have to play those teams on the road. So basically we swap Michigan State for Purdue on the road and everything else gets a lot harder. Plus we have to make sure we don’t get tripped up by 2 decent good MAC teams early on.

Also this board frequently discusses the ACC and Penn State to which I am responding.

Tell me how Penn State closing, all intents and purposes, rural county college outposts will affect Rutgers? And again it’s not about discussing these things on a “Rutgers” board. See where I say “”Rutgers” board? It’s your constant lecturing and boastful tone. Somewhere you got lost. You used to be a sound poster. Now you come across similar to the old cuse and bc tools that used to post here.

First of all you are not the Rutgers Board Censor.

My comments to the discussion include topics of Rutgers and LSU and how they compare.

Rutgers will be facing the problem of maintaining tuition paying student body in the future just as Penn State is facing now and in the future. Rutgers will not be immune.

No I’m not a censor. But it’s always best not to be a condescending douche when on others boards. Again not sure why anyone from another school would want to spend so much time on another’s schools board unless of course that is your intention.

Big difference in maintaining branch campuses in remote pennsyltucky and a flagship research university. But I think you knew that.

Though I recognize the facetiousness of your post, If our fanbase actually cared about football and fielding the best team possible, Jeremiah Smith would be catching passes from Drew Allar.

But Since we have a beer budget, we have to watch kids develop and make their share of mistakes. How we recruit is a reflection of what we’ve invested in the program. In most cases, that’s nothing. Most have invested zero in football infrastructure, though there are limited exceptions. Most of what we’ve spent has gone towards operational expenses of running the football program. This is an opportunity to build the capital infrastructure of the program, to ensure the possibility for maximum success.
