Schiano's incredible success in player retention

I expect that we will get a few more portal entries , but your point is valid and an impressive part of what GS 2.0 brings to the table.

Exactly. This is why we have to live with the questionable in-game decisions. I just wish we didn't have to.
Greg's a great fit for Rutgers ( top HC candidates don't want the job) because he breeds confidence in his players and recruits feel it, other schools not so much because of some of his gameday decisions.

Penn State must have a boatload of NIL money...from the outside Franklin comes across as a dick so somerhing else is keeping them there

Not intending to knock Greg, but it could also be due to having less blue chip recruits in the program fighting for playing time and riding the pines. He goes so far to admitting it himself labeling his a "developmental" program.

It’s the culture he’s built. It sure as hell ain’t the NIL money we’ve donated. This is why he’s worth every penny of the 6M+ we’re paying him.
I think it has very little to do with Franklin. It's the name "State Penn" that attracts and keeps people glued to the school. You could hire a f*cking monkey and folks in Central Pa. would cheer and defend that primate as if he's god.

Was speaking about Rutgers. With regards to Penn State, it’s definitely the environment.

90% of the programs such as Wisconsin, Florida have all used the label "developmental when describing its program. The majority of Rutgers players have multiple P5 offers, so how is that not a blue chip? Btw, when you say, "Not intending to knock Greg...", you KO'd him. 🤣

There are over 6,000 football players in the portal as of today, do you think they are all blue chippers?

I had the same thought. I would think that RU’s transfer rate is probably helped by not having a ton of players other teams are looking for. But I also think GS and the way he runs the program are probably also big factors.

Gotta say, though, that it’s just amazing that, despite not having a new fieldhouse, we don’t have everyone running for the exits, huh @rutgersal? 😉

If a kid wants the best facilities, he’s not coming to Rutgers in the first place, so confused about your assertion. He’s coming to Rutgers because of Schiano and the culture. And this is what is binding the kids to Rutgers.

We should be competing for the kids that want the best of everything, and that’s the point about building the fieldhouse.

It's the Penn State name and history and fans and, really, whoever ractually runs the football program over there.. the guys who made Franklin fire his assistants in his early years and went out and bought him better assistants.. they are the reason Penn State is successful under Franklin. They should all take a bow... and get rammed from behind by Sandusky... but they are too old for that.

I'd be curious what the numbers are for teams losing starters. Did we lose any starters last year?

Maryland just lost Edwards and Hemby. Edwards going to Wisconsin is interesting. Wouldn't be surprised if he gets close to 70% for a completion percentage just by reducing the deep shots.

Purdue has less talent than us and 25% of their roster is gone
You may agree with me as you also experienced it but I think it is part of the Schiano recruiting philosophy. Not only looking at talent but he is looking for certain type of kids and family. There are always the outliners but for the most part- our players are coming in to play football and go to school at Rutgers. You watch our teams and it actually still looks like school spirit rather than what you see at so many other schools. It is hard to explain but I equate it to when our son was in 8th grade and DBP was recruiting him, offering a full ride, etc and he wanted to keep playing ball and going to school with his lifelong friends instead of joining a football factory school where no one even knows each other.

But, but, but...I heard Belichick begged to come to Rutgers as a pro bono equipment manager, but we didn't have room for him. That's why he had to settle for a head coaching position.

I'd wait until the portal is closed. RU is looking at a lot of guys in the portal and the more that come in, the more that need to go out.

Take Schiano's advice, the past only steals from the present. Al, for you mental welfare, come into the present. Kids are not as concerned with a shiny new practice field as much as they are concerned with dollars in the pocket. $250 million fieldhouse doesn't live forever with a recruit, but $250K will go much further if invested right. Get off the soapbox before I kick it from under you. 😂 😂 😂

I was thinking something along the same lines.

If you build them some NIL, they will come.

Doug:

We don’t have money to provide in kids pockets and we don’t have the best facilities. I give what I can but many fans are dead set against paying players. So what kind of value proposition is that?

All we have are Schiano’s salesmanship, the culture he’s built, and our recent history of improvement. And at times our entertaining messageboard.
