Wow, will VCU transfers have to sit out a year?

Wow is right, with the style of play he coaches and the talent he has access to...Texas just might be one to watch. I always wondered how Smart would do at a big program, I guess we're about to find out.

West Virginia?

What great patience by Smart to not jump at his first offers a few years ago. While expectations will be large for him at Texas, he now will have big time resources to build a championship caliber program. Its a tremendous hire for Texas and a pretty big upgrade over Barnes as he had plateaued.

Definitely agree it was nice patience by Smart to wait for the right situation. I've said mid major coaches have a tendency to stick around longer at the current spots but it doesn't necessarily mean permanent. We'll see how he does now with the step up but I like the hire.

Look at Anthony Grant. .he was the one who put VCU on the map before Shaka. He took that job at Alabama and is now out. Thats not the greatest of jobs. Good job by Marshall at not bolting there

We shall see if Smart has the success that Barnes had and who got a really raw deal from a wacky AD. Classy guy who told same AD to take a hike after he told him to fire assistants. Butler aside and not a horrible loss, but two recent losses to #2 seeds, Duke and Michigan, in the tourney and he somewhow plateaued? Silly mantra without looking at the facts. Tennessee happy to grab him in a nano second.

WVU shows you can succeed with the pressing game in the Big 12. Will teams get used to it? Slight worry as shown by teams like Richmond and Davidson and even VCU lately in the tourney, that if you slow the game down and don't turn the ball over, VCU was very beatable. Perhaps new 30 second shot clock will help him. Certainly worth a hire.

Happiest person in all of this: Danny Hurley and URI with one less huge competitor and now the best D in the conference.

Long suffering fans would be excited with wins over St.Peters and St.Francis.Having unlimited funds is utopia ,ie,Kentucky ,but not Rutgers.

Seen in an article "Self's prediction: UK over Duke in the final" ...

Shaka's style: New Texas coach Shaka Smart took what some perceived as a shot at KU at his introductory news conference when asked how he thinks his pressing style will fare in the Big 12.

"It translated pretty well a few years ago in San Antonio," Smart said as reported by Brian Davis of the Austin American Statesman. Smart's VCU team beat KU in the Elite Eight in 2011. KU coach Self declined comment on the statement.
