1. While I never think he'll be a factor in the NBA, Sanders is now a really legit and complete college player - defends, can go both ways, way improved handle, better long range shooter and shooter off the dribble.
2.Williams - hope he is OK. Thought he was the heart and soul of the team last year, and I think he still is. Shot looks to have improved some.
3. Freeeman - Kid has picked up where he left off and definitely improved. I would think, however, with all the experience on the staff someone would be emphasizing him using his legs on the foul line. I don't care how much you practice foul shots, if you practice the wrong way you're never getting any better, and he shouldn't be shooting past 12 feet either.
4. Thiam - Another kid who seems vastly improved. There was one reverse move he made to the basket late in the game than he could not have made last year. Looked stronger offensively on the low block, and while he missed the only three I can remember, his release is clearly higher with less arm movement.
5. Doucoure - Would like to have seen more of him.
6. Baker - Honestly expected to see more. Seemed very poised for his first appearance at the RAC. You can certainly see the potential. I honestly expected to see a kid who could create a shot whenever he wanted. I'm not sure I saw that. With experience, however, he will become a legit Big 10 player.
7. Doorson -I don't see anything there.
8. Omurey (sp.) - A little small to play inside in the Big 10, and not really a good enough shooter to play outside. He has improved, however, considerably. Looks to me like a nice 7-8 guy off the bench.
9. Souf - Could have used him off the bench yesterday at linebacker. Seriously, seemed to give us today what we want of him - a good defender who will make few mistakes, keep the offensive flow intact, and give a rest to the other guards.

Overall - Impressed. I think our program will reach a high level before most expect. St. Johns was a little quicker than us and scored mostly on slashing moves. As Pikiel improves our defense we'll allow less of that, plus we'll do a better job blocking out. I think if this were a real game we would have played a little more zone also to compensate for their penetration. Thiam and Baker, with their wing spans, on the wings of the zone would also keep them from having many open threes. Think Syracuse.

Not sure where you got #9 from. Souf was terrible. He turned the ball over twice leading to easy baskets and I didnt see him make a positive play in offense. If he is playing more than 5 minutes a game we are in serious trouble.

I would like to give him more of a chance than one exhibition game before making that statement.

I would have liked to see Johnson. I agree will most of what you stated but Disagree with 7 & 8. Doorson was effective defensively.
Omoruyi was very effective both ends. I would probably put Thiam at number 7. Can’t say it enough but Coach P and staff are just so cool, calm and collected!Just my take.

Agree with most of this .. and from your comments, I'm pretty sure I sat next to you at the game today. :)

Corey Sanders still doesn't go left....at all. I thought he was a disappointment today.

Baker has real talent but shot the ball poorly today and played like a frosh at times.

Mike Williams played very well. He and Freeman both played like seniors. Really, really, really hope Mike's injury isn't serious. We need him badly.

Sanders was real quiet in th first half, wasn't looking for his shot and turned it over cple times. But seems after he hit a three early in second half gave him some confidence and started attacking more. On winning shot, he created space with a fake cross over to left and defender nearly fell down.

Thiam was invisible with exception to one nice drive late in game.

Doucoure similiar game to Sa - not going to contribute on offense.

Freeman looked good

Baker looked great! Tried to do too much in first half but settled down.

Defense was ok. Guards for St John's were quick and not the easiest to stay in front of. St johns prob had 15-20 pts in fast break layups off turnovers.

First game against this level of competition. He will be fine in his role off the bench.

He might have not driven left to the basket, but did use his left often and with confidence.

souf wont find many guard tandems quite like sju's. I think he will be fine. Controls tempo, gives the starters a break. Exactly what we need.

Geo also is going to be a fine piece. Hes very very long, composed. Stroke looks good, just wasnt falling earlier.

The more I think about it the more I'm thinking mix in some 1-3-1 matchup with Sanders on the baseline, Doucoure on the foul line, Baker at the top, and Sa and Thiam on the wings. Tough to drive against and tough to get a three off against.

“Baker was great and Sanders was terrible.”

Somewhere in between is the truth. If Sanders doesn’t come alive in the 2nd half run we don’t win. Freeman is legit but needs to improve on free throws. So does sanders. Those two will get to the line the most.

If Williams is OK maybe we’ll finally see what he should’ve been freshman-junior year. We need him.

Hopefully Baker isn’t the freshman-junior Williams shooting. He can play, but I️ don’t think he’s Jeff Greer.

Said it in the game thread. Huge drop off on the floor when Souf spells Sanders.

Rest of the team is exactly where I️ thought.

Doucoure looks like a monster. He’s a freshman!!!

Nice win today. Great showing of grit. 17-16 (including B1G tournament). Could be much better though.

Geo's shot wasn't falling but he can handle the ball and had a couple of real nice looking assists. Souf while his first game for us did leave something to be desired.....but not ready to write him off yet. ;-)

Really nice win which seemed to come from nowhere as SJU looked very good. Incredible quickness from the two guards ..They'll do well this year .
Freeman , Williams and Sanders looked very good and Thiam and Omorunyi looked much improved. The guy who stood out to me was Baker . He struggled with his outside shot but had poise, passed really well and held his own defensively considering how good the SJU guards were. Once he gets more confidence in his shot , he will be a very fine guard for Rutgers.
On the negative side, the Rutgers bigs did little to contest the SJU guards on their drives and Rutgers rebounding was mediocre at best. Doucoure should get the minutes so long as he avoids bad fouls . Doorson did nothing and Sa was a non-factor.

9. Souf - Could have used him off the bench yesterday at linebacker. Seriously, seemed to give us today what we want of him - a good defender who will make few mistakes, keep the offensive flow intact, and give a rest to the other guards.

I would love to see Bullock (DE or TE) and Mensah (LB) on our football team.

Was there a seat between us and was I wearing a white shirt with an R on it?
There was a seat between us, but I don't remember what shirt you were wearing. I remember we disagreed on whether there was a travel when the SJU player went to the ground and there was a scramble for the ball, and we talked about Pikiell's free throw practice techniques.

Way too much criticism in this thread. As Iverson said, "We're talkin about practice man."

All things considered, it was a good showing. I wish Freeman made his free throws and Corey didn't go 1 on 4 among the trees, but otherwise there's a lot to like here.

Mike, Corey and DeShawn stepped up as veteran leaders do, and the role players all chipped in. Geo will be fine, and Souf will make his contribution. Eugene, Mamadou, Issa, Candido and Shaq all gave us some productive minutes.

Take the positives, as many have described above, and reserve judgement on the rest.

Not sure about Souf? Didn’t look like he could do much with the speed of St. John’s. I don’t know about the other guard tandems we will face but I’m betting they are also fast as hell. We really struggled in guarding them and that concerns me. I think our zone was the best defense we showed, no real press and we were killed man to man.

Geo Baker impressed me the most especially some of his passes. He can shoot and create shots. Remember, this was his first game against that level of competition but I think he can handle it and get better. Not sure if Souf can, but we’ll see I guess? Loved Eugene’s play. Corey was Corey on offense. Defense needs improvement.

My take

We are gojng to try to play faster

Senioritis matters

Geo has a bright future ...very fluid. Nice looking shot that didn't fall today. Very good court awareness. See 10 ppg this year

Love pike switching to Zone late

Doucoure looks to have decent touch from line

Playing snalll ball gives us best scoring team on the floor.

Eugene has a lot of really good hoops in him, especially being a new guy to the game. Does a lot of little things

Mike shot looked a lot more fluid

Like that we do push until we don't have ...and then set up. Thought decision making was good

11/32 in first half with good looks...but didn't expect 17/24 in the second half

I’m curious, after reading this thread, how did we win?
I'm with you. This makes it sound like half of our squad struggled, yet we beat a team projected to reach the postseason.
You are not wrong to be curious on how we won. I was there for the full game and it’s hard to explain how we came back from the 11 point deficit in such a short period of time. If I didn’t know or care about the score and just gave some quick view points, it really looked like St. John’s was more athletic, much faster, more aggressive on defense with a smothering press that we had some trouble overcoming and two guards who in one of one, blew past our guards to score on most every drive and/or get fouled.

I will give you two things. I think Doucoure will be very good when he’s out of foul trouble and both him and Corey both had 4 fouls and missed a lot of time on the court and we still won the game. So that’s a good sign. I’m nervous about Mikes injury because we need him on the court.

Wasn't at game and didn't see it. Baker getting 32 minutes says something. Not sure yet what it says. An optimist and a pessimist can look at it differently.

One has to be very concerned about our depth and injuries. Suffice to say Sanders, Baker, Freeman or Williams can't get hurt.

That is 100% on the money. With Geo, I’m not sure the stats say much of anything. He will score more points and he looked very poised for a freshman playing against that kind of competition. Remember that we don’t usually play a team like St. John’s until we’ve played a bunch of smaller schools so Geo will be batter and better as he gets used to the flow of the game. The big 10 is going to challenge him in a bit this year and it does for most. Freeman lit up non conference opponents last year and then came back down to earth when conference play started. He was impressive yesterday and also made a lot more free throws which was encouraging. I wish he would stop taking 3 pointers as it’s not his game and I think those are wasted possessions; which we can’t afford. Getting back to Geo, I hope he gains some muscle as he’s very thin and the big 10 guards are all strong and tough to guard.

We need Mike Williams and we still need Corey. Biggest disappointment yesterday for me was Souf. It’s just one game but I’m not sure he has what it takes to play at this level. He looked lost out there.
