Just got a look at the St. Mary's gym where Gonzaga will be playing later tonight. ESPN is hyping the game and showed the gym. St. Mary's is a top 20 team. The gym looks like a higher level NJ high school gym ! How do they convince top flight players to go there and spend their careers on a high school quality gym ? I'm not being snide. But we complain bitterly that RU doesn't have a facility that will attract the better players. (???) How does St. Mary's do it ? Again, I'm being serious. Can't figure it out. And I mean nothing negative toward RU or our coaching staff.

St Marys is playing in the WCC not the Big East or Big 10, their peer schools are not Michigan State and Michigan.,...St Marys is the exception not the rule, a niche basketball school and I bet they have a practice facility thats nice and I bet their school spends ALOT on basketball. They were able to ride Gonzaga's coattails to be 2nd in a league that is quite mediocre beyond they, Zags and BYU

St. Mary's has a pipeline to top players in Australia. They have brought in talent such as Patty Mills, Matthew Dellavadova, etc. They probably bring in 2 players from Australia every year.

Ever see pictures of their campus?? Absolutely stunning. Pepperdine like.

I was at our game at St Mary's in the GW era. It IS a high school gym. It was quite a good time as we had a nice little RU contingent, including BK who got me the tix. And Douby was Douby that night

Noticed that behind the basket people were sitting on folding chairs.

Folding chairs------think about that.

Was there bingo afterwards ?

I would be shocked if there was this nice practice facility on campus.

But having said all that Randy Bennett is a very fine coach-----has the niche of getting guys from overseas and the campus is beautiful-----and the small private school works for some guys.

Ok so years ago your designing the RAC how do you design a building that has about 50 to 100 seats max behind the hoop. There is plenty of land how do you not make the building 50 ft longer and make it 1000 seats. That's a head scratcher. That's the PERMANENT section no need for pull out bleachers. Whoever designed that and signed on it was a big time fail. What could that have cost back then an extra 500K max

I went to the Uni of Florida . It was beautiful. Pepperdine was in a class by itself. My ex's son attended and we used to drive up from San Diego as much as possible and could not believe that anyone could concentrate on anything but the view.

This. It should also be pointed out that Mills and Dellavadova are in the NBA. They develop and identify talent, something RU has been unable to do for most of the last 30 years.

Great coaches do amazing things. Randy Bennett is outstanding. It's talent & coaching. Hopefully we have hired our great coach

What their coach has been able to do is stockpile a lot of top kids from New Zealand. Their best player Landale (sp?) is from NZ. He has built a nice system of winning even though they play in the WCC.

It's actually more New Zealand I believe.

East Coast - West Coast. The west coast does not have the number of schools
competing for all the talent there. Take away the Pac12 what do you have?
Gonzaga, St. Marys and God knows who else.
In the East Coast, besides the Big East & ACC you have schools like UMass, Temple, St. Joes, Fordham, The Ivys,
Iona, Rhode Is, Buffalo, GW, Wagner, Stony Brook and a few dozen more up and down
the east coast.

Pepperdine is the most gorgeous campus I've been to. It's actually more the view than it is the campus. Stanford, UCLA, and Alabama ain't too shabby either. I have visited somewhere between 50-100 campuses and Rutgers is easily near the bottom of that list in attractiveness.
I have visited many college campuses and agree that Rutgers is one of the least attractive campuses that I've seen. And I think it's one reason a number of fine students look elsewhere and out-of -state. I always liked North Carolina -Chapel Hill, Emory's campus and that of Miami of Ohio......
