Our team is playing very tough defense but we definitely need shooters that can score. I think next year might be very close to this year but that 2018 could be much better if we can land Naz Reid and a couple of other really good recruits. If we ever bring in both Doucoure and Reid we might be on our way. The Mathis kid from Baltimore seems like he could be a great addition as well. Pikiell and his staff are recruiting harder than any RU staff has ever done. I hope many of our fans do not get down on our team for our remaining games this season or next season. Most said they would be happy to see a strong effort but now I see too many people wanting instant satisfaction. We knew this season would be difficult. We need to look at the big picture. We are so much better on defense & rebounding than last year.
I think Baker and Mensah can help at PG next year and Corey can play more 2G backed up by Johnson and Williams. We might play 3 guards often next season. I think Eugene needs to play more minutes this season and he can be a bigger contributor next season. I might be wrong but I think Bullock just might see some minutes next year at SF. Thiam needs to find his condidence again from three. The staff is working hard. I hope that Doucoure does reclassify as some have speculated as we will need another center for next season. I firmly believe that as hard as our staff is working they will bring in four good player for the 2018 class. Just "Stay the Course" please. Be patient. Too many of our fans are becoming too critical. I see a team working hard every game. Hopefully there will be some rewards down the road.

I'm not as much a fan of Baker as some here and I didn't like getting Mensah at all. People like Omoruyi, Thiam and Bullock may be nice role players but will not help us get out of the basement. Right now we need at least five more guys as good as Doucoure and Pikiells staff landed exactly one guy that good once out of eight commits. Sorry but I think it will take much longer than three years to get north of .500.

Just say in 2018, you have Mamadou, Baker, Sanders as a senior and Naz Reid on the court together. Add some other top talent which if we get Reid would immediately put RU into consideration and where do you think we are as a program? That's why I believe 2018 is the year we are either back in the NCAA tourney or pretty close on the bubble.

Not sure why you don't like Mensah or Baker? What's not to like about the film unless you've seen either play live?

Here's the thing with Baker....All of the recruiting sites, not just Rivals, had months and months to update Baker once he committed to us. But he stayed a two star or unrated the whole time. If he was a budding star there's no way they don't update him. I'm not an expert when it comes to rating film but these guys are. That's why I have pause.

I am still puzzled by Mendah. He's not going to make anyone a better shooter or make for example Freeman taller. And he's not a good scorer in his own right. I don't see how he makes the team better next year. And he's only here for two years so its not like we got him for the future.

I agree with Knights. People need to be realistic. I saw people saaying last night "This team sucks, we can not score, this is painful" Sure, but that is a quick way to a buzzkill. The team has improved vastly, from a skill standpoint, and a marketing standpoint.

The two biggest keys to next season in my eyes(and one starts this year) are that Baker comes in ready to go(Van Dyke coordinates a program with him to put on ten pounds), and Thiam is ready to go. Right now, neither is true.

Those two things happening are huge. Also, Thiam starting his catch higher. If Thiam can work on getting his shot off quicker, Mensah will find him. Mensah, still a head scratcher of sorts.

Knights, really frustrating game last night. Up 28-19 withthe ball with 1.44 to play in the first half after Nigel hits 2 from the line , then back to back possessions allowing offensive rebounds , 2 missed bad shots by Nigel and Corey and then COREY's questionable block at the buzzer , all changed the complexion of the game. Instead of taking a double digit lead or at least 9 point lead into the half , 28-25 lead, seemed minuscule considering how we dominated the half. Thought that was the turning point of the game. Lack of shooting continues to kill us, whether it is open shots, or our bigs not strong enough to go up and dunk or be fouled and instead blocked at the rim, or timely foul shooting. We are close but lacking consistent scorers . Corey's been scoring more, Nigel leads us in scoring , but Mike has slumped . Deshawn has stepped up last 2 games but prior to that not so much. We cannot get the whole team clicking again and cannot afford off shooting nights from Nigel or Mike if we are going to win these games.
So many positives but again any team in this league not scoring between 65-70 will lose.
Some of the random observations:
1) Thought our defense for the first 18 minutes of the first half was as good as possible. Nigel's tremendous pressure on Macintosh , disrupting Northwestern's sets were outstanding . Collins in his post game said the same thing ;
2) Thought we tired in the second half, and thought COACH could have switched defenses , switch to zone, or a trap because Northwestern got into a rhythm and started posting Law down low. Also thought he waited too long to press full court. I think Coach has to switch up defenses more because as the game progresses teams are getting into rhythm. Michigan State ran high pick and roll for 7 straight possessions for layups or dunks. Coach should have switched that game and last night. I think our length makes our press effective and we need a way to get another 6-10 points on offense and this seems the best way.
3) Thought on the road trip to Iowa and the Wisconsin game, we spaced the floor more letting our guards break down their guards and setting up for good shots. Last night, especially in the second half our spacing was too tight allowing Northwestern to collapse on a Corey and Nigel too easily. We failed to get the ball down low enough to D Shawn or to CJ on the block. Really disappointed in CJ missing a lot down low in the first half or on followups.
4) The shooting woes as everyone knows are killing us. Another tough game for Mike , 2-8, 0-3 from three and Nigel 2-14, and 0-5 from three. We are the worst in the Big 10 averaging 4.8 threes. If we just make 4instead of 1, we likely win last night . A little disturbing was Coach's post game almost admission that he doesn't want us taking more than 10 threes a game( I think on the heels of too many against Penn State and not good from there), which is not a winning formula. It has appeared the guys since Penn State are very tentative , especially early in the shot clock, and are passing up good open looks for forced shots later in the clock. Laurent and now Issa are not even trying to shoot from three and it is hurting us badly. If we got 10 points from them a game , we likely win a few more games. I have said repeatedly that if we hit 6 three pointers a game we likely win 6-8 conference games . Now we have had a few games not hitting even 4-5 per game and it is costing us games. I really think we have to make a conscious effort to go inside / out to get Mike or Nigel or Corey or Issa in rhythm. We are attacking the rim but not under control or not using our bodies to draw more fouls.
Really was a body blow losing to Northwestern last night but we have to continue to keep the faith and hope the entire team can play well on a few nights instead of only 1or 2 different guys every night.

Naz Reid isn't coming to Rutgers.
A player of Reid's ranking has the choice of top tier schools.Rutgers might have received consideration prior to the B1G season but with league losses mounting the chances become far less likely.

You were expecting the staff to bring in 4-stars part way into their first season? Both guys will help. Maybe it will enable Sanders to move to the 2--he really is not a PG. Small steps, grasshopper.

Unfortunately, unless we pick up a big recruit or transfer who is eligible immediately, we may not be any better next year. A lot of our players have limited potential and there is a chance Sanders may not be back.

I wish we got a better recuiter, but fine I have no problem this mindset. However its going to take a hell of a lot longer than three years to get us out of a hole.

There are no quick fixes in any rebuild and this is a true rebuild. Each player is not going to be a starter level recruit at this stage of the process. This isn't a Kentucky//Carolina type of process....at a minimum, it will be 3 full recruiting classes and into Year 4 where you can look for significant progress.

It's more of an athlete type of issue, just watch the TV from game to game and it's footspeed, switching on defense and rebounding the basketball.

Ugh

Right now ....and this may change ...it is about these three things

Ability to shoot the basketball
Ability to shoot the basketball
Ability to shoot the basketball

We are doing everything else good enough right now to have won 3 of the last 6 and people thinking NCAA bubble

Find and recruit can score...this staff will take care of the parts of development

we still need another guard and another quality center. You cant rely on a freshmen center to get you over the top

I am glad that Vitale did not give up when people said don't bother recruiting Phil Sellers.

Rutgers needs shooters more than athletes. The last thing Rutgers needs is more complementary type players.Significant progress better occur faster than 4 years from now .At Rutgers slow improvement usually means one step forward and two steps backward. A sense of urgency is required because a dwindling fan base and top tier recruits won't wait.Twenty five years of futility proves the point.I'm pretty sure Pikiell understands the urgency to win early because the competition isn't resting on past laurels. The reality of sports is that coaches are hired and then fired after poor results.

Barring scandal, Pikiell is going to get 5 years easily. Hobbs will be very patient. Yeah, Pikiell will have to start landing shooters and better talent, but I bet in year 4, if Pikiell is 14-17, he gets another year.

Unless you're talking about transfer, which would be ridiculous considering the role and minutes Sanders gets, there is 0 chance of him leaving

He's definitely not going to the NBA but you don't think there is a chance he goes to Europe?

Why would he do that? He can continue starting here..He was already a borderline NBA prospect. I'd assume he'd think he can turn it around while simultaneously getting a degree. Isn't the competition In the big ten better than the competition in Europe?

Just wondering if he wanted a paycheck next year. Hope you're right.

The word is that Reid's stock is dropping... which happens sometimes with kids who were touted as stars in eighth grade. Some level off, other people catch up ... in this case, it could help a program like Rutgers get him, because he's still certainly good, but the Kentucky's and Duke's are more likely now to back off.

he is getting at mininum 6 if not 7 I think

Look at the Penn State coach, 6th year and they now are a solid team.

and yet they are likely to finish around 500 overall...thats the point ive making the past couple of years, you just dont move up in this league quickly. How is RU going to move up unless we start outrecruiting everybody else. Its a longshot, just as it is with Chambers

The issue really isn't the number of years but rather the shape of the program ,ie,size of fan base, donor support and status of recruiting. For every step forward there could be two steps backward .How do you get out of the abyss when there is nothing to sell?
