Talking football.

gef: I envy you bro. X&Os are just a hobby for me. You're actually living it!

I remember most of my coaches quite fondly. They taught me some very valuable lessons that I carry with me to this day.

After those books, the (internet)world is your oyster -- so much good stuff out there with clever Googling.

But these are good books that can provide you with a solid knowledge base to build upon.

Have fun!

I have been very lucky to have been able to coach a sport I love. My years coaching college were spectacular. I learned a tremendous amount in those 2 years and had a ton of success. I always debate about going back to the college level but we will see.

I am trying to find a way to put film break down videos here without giving away who I am. I would have to post them to my youtube but that would give me away and then ti would also give away where I have coached.

Thanks, will start with those books. I watch a lot of football but want to understand more about the underlying strategy and these seem like a good place to start.

Once you start to understand concepts watch a game (on repeat) specifically for those concepts.

@gef21 can we discuss DBs turning their heads around.

What I saw today was pathetic. Running step for step with the WR. All he needs to do is turn his head and play the ball. I would like your take on it.

I actually expected a post for some reason.

We went a lot of man yesterday which tells me something about how our LBs have been playing. They sold out to stop the run and wanted to get our LBs on the move by blitzing them. The LBs did not play very well.

I digress though. Yes that was a major issue with our CBs today. I thought when we got into man situations, or deep 1/4 situations, we made some major mistakes. At every level I have coached we teach hand on hip technique. This is fairly common and allows the defender to understand when the WR is slowing down, or turning, in order to make a defensive play. We were not doing that. We were running and only trying to use our eyes, which is what lead to us losing all of those jump balls.

In my opinion Wharton had a very bad game. He was getting beat a lot and, in my opinion, was panicking and losing all of his technique. He was just turning and running , with his head down, as to not get beat deep. I believe it is absolutely a technique issue and even in a panicking situation you should revert back to comfortable technique and that clearly does not happen. If I was a coach on the side line I would know I failed my kids if they could not execute in that situation. Coach ash said we did not win enough 1 on 1 battles and that is very true. I do not think our CBs are comfortable enough with technique in order to win 1 on 1 battles which goes back to preparation and coaching.

On the bright side Hampton is going to be VERY good for us. And the young LBs are getting there. They do not play cloudy/clear very well at all yet.

I also absolutely hated the Turay in man coverage on the TD. They tried to have him do that all game and was always a step behind. They KNEW we were doing that. When the WR went in motion and our CB carried over I said "HB on a wheel route for TD right now". Turay was lost. That to me was a terrible job by a coaching staff member somewhere. Someone in the booth or on the ground should have red flagged that early.
