I also listed the teams that are putting themselves on the map. This is how things can change Quickly in College Football for the better and for the worst. Hopefully we are the latter.

Rankings to date (per CBS Sportsline)

Teams who have fallen.

Notre Dame #85
Missouri #92
Mississippi State #95
Oregon #97
Arizona #98
Oregon State #106
Iowa State #111
RU #117
Fresno State #124

Teams on the map.

Western Michigan #17
Appalachian State #30
Troy #33
Toledo #35
Middle Tennessee #46
Temple #51
Akron #62
Eastern Michigan #65
Army #67

Their not just ranking these teams for fun. They are taking in account the body of work put forth on the field this year and assessing it.

Other than Army, I still think the other teams on the up list, suck. Would' t send my dog to any of those schools.

Just goes to show that there is parity in College Football these days. If a program has a vision and a plan, you can put a very good team on the field regardless of the size of the school. I give them all the credit in the world.

here's the thing....we've discussed this before...put most of those teams against a B1G, SEC, ACC,, Pac-12, or B12 (yup, even B12...) slate, alone with 1 or 2 OOC P5 games and, well, this WON'T be the case most of the time. Some of these team will be lucky to win 3-4 games, actually. Let's take a look at Sagarin rankings for these teams, 1st #, along with their ridiculously weak SOS's (2nd #):

Western Michigan 23rd (95th)
Appalachian State 62nd (89th)
Troy #66th (131st)
Toledo #46 (125th)
Middle Tennessee #67 (94th)
Temple #51st (63rd)
Akron #99th (93rd)
Eastern Michigan #122nd (99th)
Army #78th (145th)

...as you can see, with more properly weighted SOS's, based on whom teams have already played, those rankings drop a bit for most teams. Bottom line is while the occasional upsets, or just plain old W's, happen vs P5 schools, these teams typically don't have what it takes to grind out a P5 schedule over the course of a season.

Nuts, could you give us the Sagarin rankings for the teams who have fallen. If you have the time. That should be interesting. Thanks in advance!

"The Fallen:"

Notre Dame #42 (41st)
Missouri #58 (34th)
Mississippi State #56 (39th)
Oregon #49 (12th)
Arizona #70 (18th)
Oregon State #81 (13th)
Iowa State #85 (16th)
RU #114 (14th)
Fresno State #143 (67th)

...now, some of those teams I find a little, let's say "odd," being on that list, and the rankings are the big deal (either way), but take a look at the SOS's:

Outside of Fresno not a single "fallen" one below 39. On the other hand, with the "on the map" list, not a single school above 89 other than Temple at 63! Pretty much sums it up IMHO.

Thanks Nuts! Yeah, the numbers make sense! Don't know how CBS Sportsline comes up with their rankings, but it's good to weigh their system against other systems. The one thing that is still true here is these teams have still fallen back.

There are 3 B1G school's in the top 17, fyi.

Yup.

Not judging just pointing out his formula really likes the overall strength of the PAC12. Adding in Stanford, USC, and UCLA they have 5 of the 13 toughest schedules in FBS. Could be the teams they play OOC too.

Nuts is talking about the SOS in the Sagarin Ratings, not ranking.

Yeah thanks! Missed that. Getting back to rankings though, the Pac 12 has 2 teams ranked in the top 25. Washington #4 and Utah #17. They play this week at Utah. Washington should win it. If so, Utah could fall out of the top 25 entirely depending on how bad they get beat. What would the SOS look like then with only 1 PAC 12 team in the top 25?

How did Michigan State not make the fallen list? Didn't they start the year as a top 25 team?

The PAC12 appears to have a number of teams that fall into the good team category. Stanford, USC, UCLA, Cal, Colorado, and WSU appear to be 6. Utah is a notch above with Washington leading the way.

You are right! My fault for leaving them out. They certainly belong there. They come in at #68 and on a 5 game losing streak. I expect it to be 6 after the Michigan game this week.

Yes, there are some decent teams, but their not overwhelming teams. Colorado and WSU seem to be the best out of the 5 you just mentioned. I feel the rest are just overrated. The PAC lacks Defense other than Washington, Stanford and Utah.

i doubt that
You put that risen category in a B1G schedule(maybe not Maryland's) and they're pounded into submission by start of game 4. You give them Illinois after games with Washington, Ohio St. and Michigan and they'll be lucky to field a team let alone win. You can't simply take one game in a vacuum and say yeah they're better because they won and we lost. The list is a crock of sh*t without scheduling comparisons.

Actually here are the AP rankings for this week.

Michigan #2
Ohio State #6
Nebraska #7
Wisconsin #11
Penn State #24.

Not what I was talking about. I used Sagarin because they're similar to CBS PLUS to use the SOS's for each school in order to show how ludicrous articles as such can be.

I bet that if you matched these teams up one weekend head to head the Fallen would beat the on the map teams 8 out of 10 games.
Well that'll be put to the test September 2017. One of the risen (Eastern Michigan) will visit one of the fallen (Rutgers).
