Tennessee

When Butch Jones first got hired and in the time when a 3M salary was considered premium I said I didn't think he was worth it. Some here thought his recruiting was great and he was on his way, I personally never put an emphasis on that. I wanted to see how he'd do on his own after Brian Kelly but he never stayed long enough at CMU and Cincy to say what was really him and what was really Kelly's leftovers. I think he hired PSU's DC, who I think is good, this year but I guess it hasn't helped.

It doesn't matter. Nobody in the SEC east has a snowball's chance in hell at beating Alabama for their championship.

I agree, frankly I wouldn't give much better than that for anyone in college football (Michigan/OSU/Clemson, etc..). If Alabama is at its best, I don't think anyone beats them. If they shoot themselves in the foot in a game then someone may have a chance.

But this was suppose to be UT's year to at least get to the title game. Georgia is under a new coach. Missouri is down as well with a new HC. I think UF has had some injury issues as well. So there was a path for them and if you get there who knows. It's like PJ Fleck, who I'm not a fan of, a couple of the top MAC coaches like Dino Babers, Matt Campbell have left and he's taking full advantage to date. He should take the title this year and right now he's on track to do better. He's taken advantage so far, Butch Jones not so much.

Butch Jones always wins in February and never in the fall.

Other than Alabama I am not convinced that the
SEC is so strong. Look at all the tough gamed the SEC has had against non P5 teams and 1AA teams.

Every year there is one SEC that is particularly overrated. This year is Tennessee and it should have been seen after the first few games. I get that they won, and that's all that matters, but they should have fell further in the polls. They needed overtime to beat App State, and then they got 5 turnovers in the VaTech game.
  • VT is up 14-0, then they fumble and TN recovers on the VT 5 yd line and gets a TD.
  • TN recovered their 2nd fumble on the VT 29, but they miss the FG.
  • VT on a 60 yard drive and fumbles @ the TN 21. The VT defense holds TN and forces a punt. However the VT returner fumbles and TN gets it at the VT 43. Ends up as a TD for TN.
  • TN then kicks off, VT runs one play and fumbles. TN gets the ball on the VT 4, and on the next play runs it in for the TD.
Not saying they shouldn't get credit for the win, b/c they should, but with those 5 turnovers and where they occurred, that win was not as impressive as the final score would make you think.

They beat Ohio, but it was a 21-19 game until the 4th, and the stats are fairly even for the game. Now, they had solid wins vs Florida and Georgia, but they are an example of taking advantage of preseason hype (#9 ranking) as opposed to on field results.
