At the Court Club auction yesterday (thanks BK, great job!), I picked up a dedication program for this awkwardly and unimaginatively named building. Thought you guys might enjoy reading some of the text, even if it is a little depressing, since the building seems never to have been completed. Still can't figure out how to post a photo here. Please help me.
"The new Athletic Center, costing approximately $8 million, is the first step in a total construction budget of $10 million. A field house, which be added later, will provide room for out-of-season and inclement weather practice for varsity and sub-varsity teams and general-purpose space for recreational and intermural sports. [intermural?]"
"The first stage of construction consisted of the building itself and an 8,500-seat arena."
"Phase two will involve the completion of some of the building's unfinished areas, which will be made into facilities for wrestling, karate, weight lifting, and handball, plus a classroom for special student programs and other activities."
"Phase three of construction will complete the main lobby and install another 1,000 permanent seats."
"An unusual fact about the new center is the number of changes which had to me made in the original plans in order to respond to the growing needs of the women's intercollegiate athletic program. Most of the the changes related to the locker and rest room areas, which are now equal in size and amenities."
I love that last paragraph. Hard to believe they wasted that space in a one page program. Enjoy.
