The Good...and not so Good (and a Question) UCLA

Good:
  1. Monangai. As good as Pacheco was with a bad OL, Monagai has been better. His second half performance was gritty and successful. When we got down 5 and it was rolling (until that rb screen), it looked like one could point to KM's second half as turning around the season. He is special and while we will likely have some good backs, it will likely be some years before we see one like KM and we should appreciate it down the stretch this year.
  2. TE blocking. This is something I've been repetitive on. Fletcher's pass catching was a nice surprise, but his blocking blew up so many plays it was my take his snaps needed to go down before injury. The TE blocking was very good Saturday.
  3. QB play. Some nice passes and gave the team a chance to win. Would be nice to see some of the rb throws and TE wide open looks Bienemy created rather than the LONG OUTS we see so often.
  4. Patel--While not booming deserves judos for making the fg including one long one.
  5. Strong, Dremel and Duff-Nice catches and all weapons in their own regard.
NOT SO GOOD
  1. LB play--there have been many threads already. Huge portal need.
  2. DL--Lot of young guys and some did some nice things like Walker and Hamilton, but really not sufficient to win.
  3. Tackling--WTF had happened this year. Routine plays turn into Chris Ash era big gains out of nowhere. The qb run was a thing we would never seen under GS. While I think he is still the guy for this job, self examination is always helpful for a program. Tackle better and give the ball to KM. Perhaps it can be that simple.
  4. Anyone else think the "call your shot" was almost the same as the 2004 post WVU game presser where he said some people coming to this building don't want this program to succeed but we will be just fine or something like it rant?
  5. Football IQ--Tackling angles---zone defense concepts etc. This years edition so far just doesnt seem to have a high fball IQ and whether coaching or players, it has made small gains and issues into larger ones.
  6. Repetitive offensive play calling----Have harped on this all year--So much even casual fans can see coming. KC just does the thing that worked once again and again and loses deception. ON the interception even the announcers said that RU ran the same play 4 or 5 times before and the dback so it coming and jumped the route. Need to get more motion and deception to address talent level issues.
QUESTION:
Does anyone who watched the game believe that RU had more talent on that field than UCLA did?

There has been so much hand wringing about losing to UCLA, but I for one saw few RU players who would start on that UCLA team. Yes KM Strong Powell Pierce and perhaps Dixon would (and maybe I'm missing someone) but the UCLA 2 deep appeared to be a talent upgrade from RU so it's a little ridiculous to have such a reaction. Especially where Bienemy put on a master class of how to exploit poor lb play. The result is in some ways predictable and not surprising in retrospect.

Now I see in some media that RU will be disappointed in not getting a win at USC. Think RU's talent level (now post injury) is the same as USC? Sure tackling and a healthy KM (hopefully) gives us a shot, but the goal posts seemed to have been moved not internally but externally about talent and expected results. Deception, good fundamentals and a running attack give it a shot but lets keep the eyes open as to talent differential--and especially the type of game plan needed to address that differential.

Our injuries more devastating to us then theirs are to them. Apples to apples, no injuries, I think we win.

Good analysis.

UCLA- Mind boggling that our veteran DBs covered and tackled so poorly (#7and#4 specifically) and presumably that our LBers with at least 3 years in the program repeatedly had no clue on RB and TE coverage responsibilities. Powell doesn’t look near 100%

Oops, Friday not Saturday —USC has lost 4 games by a total of 14 points and beat LSU. Chances are they will blow our doors off but hope I’m wrong.

Exactly. A win would be one of the best in program history, like beating Michigan in their down year, still looked on as a "RU classic".

BUT saw this in the media today:

Whether Rutgers’ can find a way to beat the Trojans in LA remains to be seen.

But a victory would go a long way toward easing concerns about the direction of the season – and the rebuild.

So Rutgers needs to get one of their program best wins to ease concerns?

Just go out and beat USC and that will make some feel better--

Can you imagine if that sentence was typed in any of the last 50 years how it would be laughed at?

‘call your shot’ was obviously an aggressive attempt to reject the growing feeling that he will never be a proven, winning coach in his conference.

This year was the opportunity to show the next 5 will be different from the last 4-5. And it isn’t showing that.

He’s not worried about losing his job due the outrageous contract Hobbs gave him, but his arrogance was on full display at the presser. He believes he’s doing a great job and is angry at the increasingly opposite opinion.

Not sure there is such a growing feeling except amongst a small vocal group.

Lets see how UCLA does the rest of the way. Also Wisconsin.

Look at Mich beating SC but losing to Wash who we beat. Tough conference.

So it would appear that no one is advancing that RU had more talent on field than UCLA. If so, other than the high hopes for a 9-10 win season, should there be such disappointment with a 35-32 loss (esepcially when qb I think completed 85% of passes, which is hard to do even if no D (cue rim shot that there was no D!)

Going in to this week, I would say that the talent differential is even greater. That makes scheme and game planning even more important. Is there really any disagreement that the expectations are out of whack to indicate there should be disappointment if RU does not get a road victory at USC?

The shoddy tackling, lack of a pass rush, and the inability to cover the RBs and TEs made for the Rutgers defense looking defenseless for a good chunk of the game. Horrible and depressing to watch if one was rooting for the Scarlet Knights.
With that defense I can't see RU winning another game this season.

SC's tackling has been historically awful. Even after finally dumping Grinch as its DC, they stiff whiff so often.

Based on recent efforts I'm thinking Rutgers will be doing the bulk of the whiffing.

Nice write up- I agree with someone else on here who said that if both teams are healthy we win.
And to think- we really did need all of those negatives up there just to lose.
That game was on coaching no matter how you look at it.

RU defense just plays average versus UCLA and RU wins but then again does Greg ask Kirk to go into a shell offense with a lead? I for one was glad that RU offense was able to throw it around. There’s nothing wrong with having your qb throw for 250+yds and our offense can do it. Will make Monangai that more effective to keep defenses off balance.

I hope RU comes out loose and ready to have fun by offensive playcalling that tries to score points in bunches like when RU played Wash St and Fresno St years back; and then let the defensive chips fall where they may.

GO RU

All nice things to have.Perhaps RU will have a real FB program some day.Quien save!

Will be real interested to see if any changes made re lb issues (for ex bringing in Dixon if healthy as he's big enough to be a Khaseem Greene like lb and going three lbs, OR 5 dbs but cheating up in quasi lb role. etc)

Have to believe USC will take a cue form UCLA and do their best to isolate running backs or TEs on our lbs. We have to know its coming. There must be a plan to not repeat UCLA on that issue, and with QB Moss being a threat, that needs to be near the top of the list to address.

What's are these scheme and game planning things you speak of? Also, a road loss to USC will not necessarily be disappointing. That is unless we crap the bed, look unprepared and are over matched/out coached.

They just made Eric Bienemy look like Bill Walsh. It couldn't possibly get worse. Could it?

Motion on offense

Misdirection w plays

STOP calling the same play again because it worked once and calling it until it blows up

Screens to Strong and Benjamin

Block a punt

Feed KM 25+times if not down early

Do anything to eliminate the LB problem and the TE and rb coverage

Hope Powell Longerbeam Lewis and Bailey (who needs to line up w/in 10 yards of the line of scrimmage) can EFFECTIVELY play

Thats the scheme and plan in a very general nutshell
