Isn't the purpose of the spread offense to spread out the defense? A few times at least in this game I noticed we were lined up with no one from one hash mark to the sideline, effectively leaving about 2/3's of the field for the defense to cover. Shouldn't every play have a WR on each sideline to pull a defender wide on each side and make the safeties creep over a little too? I also noticed at least one sweep to the short side of the field which doesn't make sense to me.

The main problem with RU trying to run this offense is the lack of a good running QB. Without that, this version of the spread doesn't work. There is basically a 6 on 7 match-up in the box, which makes it difficult to run the ball consistently, especially against better defenses.
