He needs to REGROUP.

Freeman more often than not doesn't finish (score) on layups / put backs (saw that he was complaining: as Captain, he needs to set an example and LEAD).

Gettys...tries...but he's not a starter...nor an answer (think he's fine to spell Diallo / Doorson)...but he seems too slow/ unable to really play D or block a shot).

Corey needs to learn ON THE JOB to PULL UP and shoot. This will free up his drives.
Until he does that, he won't be applying to the NBA.

Johnson seemed like he was in a funk. He needs to find his 3pt. shot /nail his free throws.

As a team, we also need to VALUE the BALL: stop making passes that not even Superman or Marvell heroes could catch. Better to make plays that exist in OUR universe....take a shot / HIT THE GLASS.

Think Coach needs to have a team meeting...and get serious about where we are, where we're goning...and who's on the bus.

Thoughts.

PS I am down a little that we didn't WIN....but we could have made a better showing even in a loss. Here's hoping that Pikiell has something in that bag of tricks to remedy a team that is about to go into free fall (hoping I'm wrong).

CJ is an offensive option on a team that lacks them. I liked the 15 footer he made today. We can't sit our scoring options and he does block shots and rebound too. I thought he had a pretty good game today.

You have a point....but I haven't seen him take that shot too often (though his FT % is probably one of the highest on the team).

Still the TEAM did NOT have a good game.

All good points. Shooting is still the single biggest problem for this team and this will not change until there are roster personnel changes. But, I think Pike should try pressing more to generate some easy buckets. I was not impressed with PSU'a ball handling and was surprised RU did not try to really try an all out full court press. We applied only token pressure late in the game. Too little, too, late IMHO.

As league competition progresses Rutgers offensive woes will be magnified and regrouping isn't the answer with the current squad.

I am getting weary of people putting FREEMAN down
and even more weary of people making stuff up

-Freeman is averaging 12pts a game..a virtual 3 way tie for high scorer on the team..
BTW ahead of our "star" Sanders
- at 9REBs a game is outrebounding our 7 footer who is averaging 5 REBs/8PTS a game
- Freeman often gets double doubles
http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/team/stats/_/id/164

he does miss layups sometimes

I mistakenly thought the thread title was about Coach Ps mid term
Given its 1/2 of his 1st season & what he inherited
I give him a solid "B"

Rarely do players who have never been good shooters, suddenly develop into one during the season. Coach P knows what kind of team he's got. He'll figure out the best way to utilize the skill set of the current players and scheme and substitute accordingly. I'm hoping there will be a few surprise victories along the way.

I give the coach an A, without question. If Jordan was here we would have a losing record at this point. Pikiell has maximized his teams talents at this point. Kenpom has us at 15 wins - beyond anybody's realistic dreams going into the season.

- Freeman has struggled making layups at times, and PA St did a good job denying him the ball for a lot of the game. Without guards making themselves threats outside the paint, defenses can clamp down more inside which will make it harder for him to make moves under the basket and get offensive put backs.

- Gettys helps make the offense go. A lot of our offense goes through him at the high post, and he makes good decisions passing the ball. Same thing as above with guards needing to become threats outside the paint to open things up inside.

- Sanders does need to start pulling up more. He may just have a confidence issue in his shot right now - hopefully he breaks out of that funk, because he was a .315 perimeter shooter last year and we need some of that back.

- Johnson had a bad game, but is only slightly behind his career averages from range and from the line for the season. If he made 2 more of his FTs and 2 more of this threes, he'd be right at the averages over his two seasons at KState. He's also drawing a lot more defensive attention now at 27.2 min/game than he was then at 15.9 min/game.

- Completely agree that the team needs to value the ball more. Good defenses force turnovers... but our offense seems to have a lot of unforced turnovers, too. Some of it is communication issues and some is execution - but it really needs to get cleaned up, and I'm sure Pike and staff are working on improving decision making.

Overall, I'd give Pike a A-/B+ so far.

He had an A but it seems we have regressed. Yes the competition stepped up but it's not about the 4 straight losses. It's how our Free throw percentage has gone down, how we've had more turnovers and worse and worse FG% over the stretch. Winnable game in 4 days @Iowa. They play tomorrow @Neb so they have 1 less day of rest. They are 9-6 1-1 but they just barely beat Michigan, who is last in the B1G in almost all categories, 86-83 at home. No more excuses, have to show up and show what this team is truly made of.

So who replaces the 4 guys you just pulled out of the lineup?

He needs to start taking more 12 footers when he is open and not worry about setting picks and handing the ball off. Teams just back off knowing he rarely shoots from there. Too bad he can't jump just a little because he could draw fouls and make some foul shots.

some more desktop coaching :)

Deshawn needs to get out of low box on offense in the B1G, he does not have the low post moves, his basket awareness on angles is poor, and he is not big enough. Pull up, take 8 to 10 footer keep the ball high....luv the kids desire and fearless rebounding.

NIgel has trouble with big guards, like to see him come off the bench with Williams starting. spell Corey and play 3 guards at times.

Was more upset at PSU game than MSU. Izzo seemed a little surprised by how far we have come, he was very active in the game..

Hey we are much better than last year and at least you can watch this team....

Maybe watching on ipad Sunday with sound muted as I watch the Gmen on the TV, will turn the tide!

Coach gets an A from me, and nope I do not expect them to win more than a couple B1G games this year, if that. Team is working hard on defense (several are defensively challenged) and i think he has them at least putting in effort. This team is very offensively challenged, personally i would like to see Sanders , Johnson and Williams try to get more shots off the break before returning to a secondary break or getting into the set offense because i believe that is a much tougher way to get their shots off. I see structure that i did not see last year, I see players sacrificing for the good of the team which i rarely saw last year and hopefully over time we will see improved fundamentals of the game, I think we will , because when i see them being ignored guys are getting pulled out of the game. I know the OOC schedule was pedestrian to say the least but last years team would not have won their fair share of them, the next step is to become a threat at home against the weaker B1G teams. When these players really buy in and believe in it we may see them steal a game or two.
