Curious what everyone thought of the staff's overall play-calling and personnel usage today.

Special teams needs work and some funky calls like timeouts and Oden. It wasn't bad, but definitely not above average. They get a C. Maybe a D if you want to drop the score a bit for the loss.

OC: C (double reverse nonsense, ridiculous oden subs that killed momentum, not getting martin 1 carry after he went 6/carry last week, qb run with oden when 100% expected, not acknowledging from get go that gio was best qb on roster, not enough flexibility in the slot)

Special Teams: F- (swung momentum with kickoff return on awful coverage, never got a touchback, minny always started with favorable field position, kicker couldn't make an extra point which would have tied game)

DC: B- (slow start, but defense buckled down and had some very impressive stops. Playing a lot of freshmen and they're getting better. Maddox and Hayes both had great games. Not DC's fault that LB corps so weak, but are improving. Defense getting better each week.)

The two Oden appearances were oddly timed, and I felt unnecessary. The double reverse was also questionable. On the plus side, they did pull Roberts at LB after seeing he was lost out there, which tightened up the defense. The offense ran fairly well overall throughout the game, other than a couple of bad throws/decisions by Gio. The decision to give Goodwin a lot of burn worked out as he had the game of his life, though curious we didn't see Martin at all. Special teams was rough.

Gio was hurt

Who should have went in to run it? Laviano?

B because no loss should get an A.

-Offense calls helped slow down their pass rush after they had some success.
- Defense collected itself, got stops.. haven't seen many DL shifts so far this season.. its about time they came back.

B+. This was a solid Minnesota team at home on homecoming. Should have won the game. It would have been an A except they put Tylin Oden in following a touchdown Drive which was completely mind-boggling.
Agree with this completely.

The staff took an injury-riddled, down-trodden, team and if not for a couple turnovers would have beaten a pretty good Minnesota team that beat MD by 21 points without their starting QB. Yeah, Minnesota was missing a few in the two-deep due to the restraining order. But it's not like we're playing near full strength either.

Some of our fans get an F.

Did anyone catch this comment from the announcers during the game !?!?

Ash told them "Oden will play a drive or two in every game from here on out. They really like his upside and want to mix him in"

I have a feeling his appearances were forced today. Especially the first series. The second one I think was the perfect spot for Oden but when you go empty backfield you kill any chance he has. They have to let him throw becuse it's too obvious that if he comes into the game we're trying a run

Well, we put Oden in for one play to throw a 2 yard pass, which was... odd... given that he was 0-4 coming into the game, and wasn't being asked to run. Then we put him in another time to run in the red zone, which was also questionable at that point of the game... designed QB runs are successful when they're disguised, and putting Oden in told everyone on defense what was coming.

Not that I don't want to see Oden, just that those two points were definitely questionable.

One of the times Oden was put in it was following Gio's hammy (?) injury and he wasn't able to run the play the staff wanted in that situation.

I actually thought the coaches lost the game. For once it wasn't a talent differential that lost the game.
Agree 100%... some coaching decisions quite questionable.
Where is Martin, Hicks & Turay???
Special Teams (NOT) coordinator is terrible and should be canned tomorrow!

Yes and I shuddered.

I think the staff needs to play who is best. It should be that simple.

too many guys not knowing their assignments on defense (Marquez stands out).

we don't play cutesy football around here, so cut the double reverse stuff out when we are driving right down the gopher's throats. That is not NJ football and I hope that stuff stops. Its so soft and that will become the attitude of the team. Nothing wrong with mixing it up here and there, but the fact that drew's mind went to that play in that situation is worrisome.

I wanted B- but not available.
Gio was good enough to come in on 3rd down after Oden did nothing. The reason Oden came in was because they wanted a QB run. There are only a dozen or so other plays they could have called with Gio that would have had a better chance of success.

I gave the coaching staff a solid C. If coach Ash is to succeed at Rutgers he will need better assistants and coordinators. I understand that this translates into a dirty 5 letter word "money".

Kicking cost us the game today. Ash should have brought in a scholarship kicker and a punter. So you can blame his lack of vision in recruiting (or just blame the OSU bowl game)

I'm not happy with the kicking game, but won't blame Ash or Okruch for how bad the kicking game is.
But will say it's something they need to address for next season

After Gio got hurt they had him pass on practically every down and we were going 3 and out often. The OC should have tried other forms of running the ball. The other thing is Gio always runs to the left and teams are going to figure this out. Hicks took a tremendous hit on one of his few runs. It looked like a head on truck crash. Martin is hurt and couldn't practice or play today.

FYI - We had (7) 2nd-half possessions: 3 scores, 1 INT, and only (2) "3-and-outs."

do you even pay attention?? I mean seriously. Pull your head out and stop spreading non-sense. Our fanbase is completely clueless.

I will have to check that, it seemed like we had a lot of 3 and outs in the 4th quarter and it was frustrating because the RU defense made key stops, a couple of 4th down stops to get the offense back on the field.

Well I'm not lying to you lol!

Roberts stands out most to me.

We started the game getting gashed, and several of the big plays saw Roberts not in position to make the play. Once Marquez came in, we didn't see Roberts again the rest of the game, I don't think... and Minnesota didn't see the endzone again on offense, either.

We're weak at linebacker... but Marquez gave us better minutes than Roberts did.

MARTIN WAS INJURED

Let's see the grand contributions you've made.

It was all over the board that Martin could play. You just came running here after you read the same article all of us read that Martin was out... after the fact. Bravo! Even the reporters and announcers didn't know. You, my friend, got some hate in your heart.
