Tunnel To Towers Run - Rutgers Basketball

EDIT FOR CLARITY: I never thought or expected they would run this for their best time. All I was saying was that I would be curious what a D1 basketball player could do, hypothetically.

Issa Chiam 21:14
Peter Kiss 23:04
Souf Mensah 27:34
Mamadou Doucoure 30:54
Geo Baker 32:46
Matt Bullock 34:42
Deshawn Freeman 34:44
Myles Johnson 35:30
Steve Pikiell 38:07
Corey Sanders 56:27
Shaq Doorson 1:01:49
Mike Williams 1:01:54
Candido Sa 1:02:08
Eugene Omoruyi (No Time)

As a runner I would've loved to have seen legit 5K times from all of these guys, but now I'm just confused. They all started together at about 9:33 but then they didn't run together, instead run/walking at seemingly random paces. It looks like Chiam and Kiss may have taken it at least semi-seriously, but I'd hope/think they're capable of running faster of that.

Anyway, this is what boredom gets you.

I coached cross country for 39 years. Anyone who is an athlete should easily be able to do a 5K in at least 27 minutes or better. I think most of these guys didn't take it seriously or just walked. They all should be in decent condition. I am glad they did this but wish they had tried a little harder.

It was for charity. Let's maybe try not finding a way to complain for once? The kids are working hard and clearly hitting the gym. A charity 5K doesn't have to be done like a hardo. They're high fiving FDNY members along the way and spending quality time together.. aka bonding. Relax.

Holy shiiiiit are we really dissecting their times and effort at a charity event!?!?!? They showed up, how about any of you?!? Times are IRRELEVANT! I know it's every fan base that has constant complainers but Jesus tap dancing Christ ENOUGH!

I wasn't complaining and I'm sorry if it came off that way. I was just remarking on the fact that they all started together but went at completely different paces. And I want to see 5K times from everybody because I'm legitimately curious what a D1 athlete can do, not because I expected them to go all out for a charity race.

Very proud of team and staff who participated in this great event. The purpose is too see team bonding for a special cause over any individual run times. With that said, nice going' Issa!!!

Did Shaq, Mike and Candido stop for a nap along the way?
Shaq still hasn't been cleared to play because of his foot so I think we can excuse him....but what does that say about Williams and Sa who he beat?

My brother in law is FDNY and we do the run every year.

If you have never done it, I highly encourage trying it once. It is one of the most unbelievable events you'll ever experience!

Awesome! One cool lady I know up here in Woodbury did hers in 28:30...West Point also sent a whole bunch of cadets to this very cool event!

It says that they were good teammates and didn’t let Shaq spend an hour alone walking a 5K. My goodness, some of you are so cynical. Just enjoy that these are great kids doing a great job promoting the brand and participating for a good cause.

It was also brutally hot. So I can understand these kids not pushing themselves too hard. The charity benefit is the same whether they finish in 30 minutes or 130 minutes.

Of all the 9/11 funerals I went to Steven Siller's might have been the saddest.

Nice job, Rutgers Baskeball. Much appreciated.

Maybe you should have made your demands known before the race so the team would have know that kcg88 needed their 5K times.

Great reading comprehension.

I'm a running nerd, so of course the first thing I did was look at their times. My first thoughts after that was, "I wonder what times they could run if they actually tried. I wonder how hard Issa was going." I don't "need" anything from them nor was I expecting them to run for their best time. Jeez...

2287 runners - and ISSA THIAM finished 15th overall with a time of 21:14

also - Luke Nathan did a 31:02.9 - 5th on the team - nice effort!

edit - also note that JOEY DOWNES ran a 22:55.5 good enough for 31st out of the entire 2287

But realistically - it is a fun charity run - which was done on a hot day - with a really crowded pack of runners/walkers, on concrete city streets, with a down hill & up hill of an under-the-river tunnel to run through.

When an athletic team does something like this, often the coach says "have fun - don't get hurt - those of you who are runners and who want to run - go ahead - but try not to let your size 16 feet get stomped on - and be safe & smart - those of you who want to walk with the crowd - do it with a smile, stay hydrated, represent yourself & the team & have a good time"

I don't think any of us would have been thrilled if they went all out and we lost one or more to injury. Especially on a unexpected brutally hot and humid day.

The times the RU players took to finish might not be as important as their connecting with the public and maybe they put more emphasis on interacting with people along the route and not worry about how long it takes to compete it.

e5, do you know Rick Bonadies? Rick and I know the Sillers pretty well and had the doves released for the run on several occasions. Great event!
Name does not ring a bell. Sorry.
