That's a surprise. Wonder if they really wanted him or a couple of top candidates quietly said no thanks.

Good news for us, we aren't competing with USC, but it pushes the top candidates down the list.

USC hires some guy named Clay Helton and we have fans bashing our candidate list

USC just destroyed their little brother and has them in the Pac 12 championship game. He isn't exactly an unknown.

No trickle down from there either. See everyone was complaining about the number of openings and how it would make the pickings slim but really I don't think our choices would be hampered if we move quickly enough. Campbell is probably the only hired that anyone here realistically thought we could get and that was to ISU. So far no other school has up til now. It really hasn't been a year with that unusual just a little towards the high end. I think it's 13 now with RU, UVA, Georgia. I said usually it's between 11-13 P5 openings most years. If there's no trickle down from Georgia then it should stop there. Sounds like Herman or Kirby Smart are the names right now with Georgia so that shouldn't cause any trickle down on the P5 level.

Doug Meacham might go to North Texas. Babers maybe UCF but that was shot down.

RU needs to go get Richt right now.
I like Richt but don't know how realistic he is and I've said with regards to him and Miles (when he was rumored at the time) they're as likely to take the year off as land another job.

You can't build a program on stuff like that. It almost never works. USC is a top 5 job. A superstar should have that job. Helton may be a fine coach but you think he's gonna sway recruits away from Urban, Nick or Harbaugh?

Bill Plascke, lead sports columnist for the LA Times , was lobbying hard for the Helton hire and Haden listened. The ass kicking that the Trojans laid on their cross town rivals didn't hurt. It's not like Helton is a rookie insider. This is one time that USC didn't go Hollywood on their hire and it just may work out fine.

No relevance to RU whatsoever.

USC is a top job but look at their last handful of coaches. None of them were superstars when they were hired. One turned out to be in Carroll but he wasn't when he got there and he was like their 5th choice IIRC.

Paul Hackett, Pete Carroll, Lane Kiffin, Steve Sarkisian, Clay Helton

I've said a few times here yea these schools have big names and money and their fans dream big but more times than not they just land solid to good candidates not the guys currently at the apex of the profession. Meyer and Harbaugh are the recent 2 where it happened but most of the time it's a solid to good name like Kelly at ND or McElwain at Florida, etc..

Of course. It's USC. The coach doesn't matter for recruiting. They will always kill it. The school recruits itself. They are sitting at 17 now with a drunk fired coach and interim.

They will surely move up, just like they always do.

This isn't Bill Stewart. Clay Helton is a really good coach who would've gotten a solid P5 job if he'd gotten passed over at USC again and wanted to test the open market.

True, USC would have top 10 classes if I was coach but program defining players want more.

Pete Carroll wasn't a superstar when he took the USC job. He had flamed out in his second straight NFL HC job and most people thought he was a bad hire.

USC is always going to get very good-to-great players because it's USC. The trick is to make something out of those great players.

Like what? USC has sick talent, and always does. Next year they will be in the mix for the national championship, with Helton as coach. Not sure what your point is. They have program defining players and more on the way as we type.

Yes, Carroll worked but the others didn't (see list above). I'd say a school like USC should do better than 25% on its coaching hires. Like I said I know Helton is a solid choice and he could be very successful there. But, he has absolutely no cache and USC is a pseudo pro team. Hayden is afraid is bring in a real star who will eclipse him

What's my point? You're the one arguing with me. I said that Helton wasn't a big name and USC is a great job.

As for the players, Alabama has at least 5 players earmarked for the 1st round of the NFL. USC none. If you don't have 1st round talent you don't have program defining players.

Well, they tried the "Superstar" route with Kid Kifflin and Sarkisian. Didn't work out so much. Maybe Haden actually thinks this guy is qualified for the SC job.

This is surprising. Last week, the rumor mill from LA seemed to suggest that USCw was preparing for a big hire and the speculation was that they would lure Chip Kelly back to college. This may be a good hire for them but not so much from the PR side of things.
