It doesn't look like Wawa worked out for the Grease Truck lot but it did stir up a debate about how it compares to QuickCheck.

I was one of those that believed Wawa is much better and has the better brand when compared to QuickCheck. When I was in school this was one thing that kids from all over Jersey could agree on (despite there being less and less Wawa's as your go North).

Some here claimed there is no difference and I remember one poster detailing his meals at Wawa in a mockery of the debate.

Well here's an article on NJ.com about how Wawa came in a close second for the best rated convenience store in the country. I'm not really sure how you compare convenience store chains across the country but what was more interesting was a Poll NJ.com had in the article:

Which convenience store do you Prefer?

Wawa - 78 % (519 votes)

QuickCheck 14% (91 votes)

7 Eleven 5% (31 Votes)

Other/Krauser's 3%

Wawa 2nd favorite convenience store in country

Wawa has good food, no charge for credit card on gas, no ATM fee, and clean bathrooms.

Few other convenience stores compete.

That is a nice feature but WaWa gas is the only gas station I do not get credit for with my Coscto AMEX. I can use it but Costco will not give me the points.

The NJ.com poll is a meaningless internet survey.

The Scientific Survey conducted by Market Force Information did not include Quick Chek in the poll (the chain is too small).

By the way, I never said that Wawa was bad. I said that the difference between Wawa and Quick Chek was insignificant (and then in my food reviews, I gave a slight edge in food quality to Quick Chek), and therefore it didn't matter whether Wawa or Quick Chek was put into Lot 8.

LOL.

A poll of over 600 people (with a large majority most likely NJ residents) in which 78% of people preferred Wawa compared to 14% Quickcheck is meaningless? Just because it's not "scientific"?

Just admit that many more people in NJ favor Wawa over Quickcheck. Just because you don't have a preference or agree doesn't mean other people can't have a favorite.

It's one of the most Jersey debates you can have. Perhaps next we can discuss Taylor Ham vs Pork Roll, where the lines for North/Central/South Jersey are, hoagies v. subs, sprinkles v. jimmies, italian ice vs. water ice, etc...

Yep. Pretty much. It is meaningless because it is not scientific. That pretty much sums it up in a nutshell.

And I would assume that more people in NJ prefer Wawa over Quick Chek. Wawa is a much larger chain. Many more people are familiar with Wawa. I also assume more people in NJ prefer Quick Chek over Sheetz.

But that wasn't the issue as to which would be a better fit for Lot 8.

maybe it's because I didn't move to "Joisey" until I was in my 30's, but all of those debates bore me stiff.

Okay then 99.9% of the debate on this forum is meaningless because it's not scientific.

Wawa may have more locations in NJ but they are concentrated in the Southern part of the state which is far less populous compared to the Central/Northern part of the state where Quickcheck dominates.

And it wasn't the issue but it evolved into a Wawa vs. QuickCheck debate. I just thought it would be good evidence that even though yourself and some others don't see a big difference between the two of them there is a large discrepancy in people's preference.

My guess is that's it. My parents and other relatives who moved here late could not care less about that and would probably not eat pork roll or eat at Wawa.

I moved here when I was 8. I can name all 21 counties, but I still am a New Yorker to lots of people here, just based on my accent and my whole family being from there.

QuickCheck has cheap subs and a nice 1/2 off drink happy hour.

For everything else, I like Wawa better.

At risk of sounding bitter, I think Wawa is starting to go downhill. I think their over-expansion will make the company self-destruct.

I moved here when I was ten and they bore me too.

Quite a few north jerseyans actually believe this. Many of those, though don't like Jersey anyway so I humour them with an Internet pat on the head and tell them to go play outside with the other kids

Central Jersey is the part of the state the people in Passaic County call South Jersey and the people in Camden County call North Jersey.

I resemble that remark; I live in Camden County. I don't think what Upstream says is right, although it's a good joke. Before I came to New Jersey, I thought of my sister in Middlesex County as living in northern New Jersey. Since I got here, I've realized there's a *whole* lot north of that. To me, Middlesex and Mercer are central New Jersey. That's why the state capital is in Trenton. I actually think of South Jersey as ending at exit 7 of the Turnpike. I am not sure where North Jersey starts for me, but I think it's around exit 10.

Add Monmouth too.

And you're not stupid. But please, NO fall(s) this Winter! That scared me.

I live in Gloucester County. To me, anything north of say...Cherry Hill...is North Jersey.

Thanks for your concern! I didn't have to wait until the winter to fall: I did it last evening while on a fitness walk. But all I have to show for it are a few scrapes -- a little painful right now, but they'll pass.

I am in Monmouth county very rarely, and so I always forget about it.

Thank you, but my dear departed mother, may she rest in peace, did all the worrying about me ever necessary.

I am in consumer market research. An internet poll is a biased sample. We do two kinds of polling - directly polling our customers to see what they think about specific things, and randomly polling people to ask them about us and our competitors. I assume similar principles apply in political polling as well. Then you get to issues like adjusting your sample so that it is representative - if just by some quirk you reached more women on a particular day for example.

Beyond that, Central Jersey exists without a doubt, and there is little difference at all between Quick Chek and Wawa, having been to both quite a bit. They're both a lot better than 7 Eleven and Krauser's.

I don't understand why the South Jersey people have such a massive hard-on for WaWa.

SJ isn't known for its restaurants or cuisine so maybe it's the best, most consistent food widely available.

I'm from Monmouth County and I love Wawa. I live in Jersey City now and I go to the one in Kearney.

Why do you love it? WaWa goers seem to have some sort of bond with the store that I just don't understand.

Like I said - cult.

Why?

- Cheap gas and no charge to use credit (so I get cash back)

- Great sandwiches, pretzels, iced tea. Recently tried their mac and cheese which was also good. Shakes are also very good.

- Always a clean bathroom if you need to stop and no ATM charge

- Reasonable prices on everything

And I never lived south of Monmouth County. Still love Wawa.

So those are all the same reasons to like Quick Chek.

* According to GasBuddy, the gas prices at QC and Wawa near me are the same, and neither charge extra for credit.

* Both offer sandwiches of comparable quality (although I give a slight edge to QC). Both have pretzels of similar quality. Mac and cheese at QC is very good. Shakes at QC and Wawa are exactly identical (both from F'real).

* QC has clean restrooms, and no charge ATMs.

* Prices at QC and Wawa are mostly the same. I believe the cost of the lunches and breakfasts I reviewed earlier this year were the same to the penny.

So again, what's the difference.

The only thing I can guess is that QC is mostly concentrated in Central NJ. People who live south of the QC area only have Wawa, and therefore no QC for comparison. People in the northern part of NJ, where Wawa recently started expanding, only see brand new stores and are comparing the new large Wawa's with gas stations with older, smaller Quick Chek's without gas stations.

Where I live in central NJ, we have a mix of old and new Wawa's and Quick Cheks. So I see the old and new from both chains. There is essentially no difference.
