What if.......Alabama wasn’t a fluke and Dylan/Ace really do this all year long?

I don't think anyone thinks it was a fluke. Will they both be able to average more than one point per possession for every game this season? With the type of shots that Harper gets he's going to do it more frequently IMO.

I'm wondering if this will be the supporting casts worst game.

Shouldn't say fluke.
Meant maybe this could be the norm instead of maybe the high end outlier.

Ace and particularly Dylan have proven that the hype is real but we can not expect that to be the norm.

Dylan’s performances in the last two games is legendary stuff but if he was to perform that way consistently all year then that would be one of the best seasons any player has had in the history of college basketball

The role players are gonna have to step up/ pike is gonna have to figure out a way to get more contributions form jwill, Acuff, martini Somerville and hayes

If pike was to rely on ace/ Dylan to do that all year than that would be coaching malpractice- the others have to contribute!!

we need to rebound and play better defense
In the span of 4 days we’ve played K State, ND, and Bama. All three teams are all over the map when it comes to NET, Kenpom, and any other metric you use. Each game was a one possession game in the final minute. We need to play better on one end of the court, or expect to see more of that

But can the others contribute adequately ? We know what JWill is. He should be a reliable contributor. The rest, doubtful in Shelby’s non-humble opinion.

I feel better after the last loss than I did after any of our wins. It just seems like we took a step forward vs Alabama.
Agree with this. Felt we took steps in both tournament games. Hopefully we do it again Saturday.

These Vegas games are great prep for playing OSU. Way better than if we were just playing cupcakes.

Still need to improve a lot at rebounding.

And, on offense, need to learn to let the ball do more work (lots more passes and picks that force switches) while running the opponent around to wear them down. If we knew how to do that in this last game, we would’ve won it, I think, even without having figured out rebounding.

Doing some Black Friday bop around here in Vegas - 2 days to wait for this last game is a lot. Logging a few 10k steps on the pedometer ..
Anyway, if we can get 40 minimum points from Dylan/Ace, more garbage buckets (putback bunnies) from others, & a lot more from 3, yes we can be a second weekend team or beyond in March..
Perhaps Ace gets another showcase in his home state (Atlanta Regionals) & this time lights it up..

60pts per game.
Putting the team on their back.
Both Top 5 players in the country.
Go 18-2 in the Big Ten.
Think Carmelo Anthony at Syracuse but we have 2 of him.

Why couldn't they have the best season ever as teammates?
It's at least possible.

LFG!

Carmelo Anthony had Gerry McNamara and Hakim Warrick. Not like he single handedly carried them to the title

What if Dylan develops a mindset of getting his teammates going. What if Pike comes to grips, with what he really has. Stop blitzing with slow defenders. Involve more zone, and use our long arms, as a defensive strength. Team could become dangerous

Harper isnt getting these points while we run offensive sets. The set is "Dylan, take the ball to the hole". How often was that the 1st action?
He's so good at getting all the way to the hole and finishing so it basically eliminates the need for anything else.

What do we do, run Harper ISO every 2nd or 3rd possession?

I thought he looked off against KSU (as did other players). I wonder if they weren't feeling well or had a hard practice the day before. They didn't seem to have their legs.

Will be getting ace cutting off of double teams on Dylan, with lots of quick dunks.
One of other 3 point shooters (besides Ace) has to get it going

This has been a common refrain for us.. for many years. Too much 1 on 1 and even just in and out play on one side. And the only time we seem to switch sides is on huge skip passes out of desperation. How about we don't skip and work the ball around the arc like good basketball teams do? Less risk.. more motion especially for their rim protectors.

I think what we learned in Vegas Is most games will be close. We are good enough to Play with anyone but our roster is not deep enough to blow good teams out. It's going to be fun to watch..

I agree except for the word fun.Close games can go either way and Rutgers lacks the 3 point shooter to make the winning shot like Ron Harper or Cam Spenser.

We don’t know how good Dylan will be. So far he has been damn impressive. If opposing teams can’t stop him and he doesn’t get exhausted why not have him constantly take it to the basket. When Pete Maravich first played at LSU, did they know he would average over 40 points per game? Is Dylan going to be a legendary player? At least at Rutgers, his play over the first few games suggests he will be.

I think we shouldn’t expect these types of minutes to continue. I get going all out in this showcase tournament. But it’s a long haul. I think they will star and lead, but maintaining these minutes and stats will be tough.

Of course maintaining these types of stats would be tough. It is incredibly tough. Dylan is a special player. How special we don’t know yet. I will say that I have been watching Rutgers games since the RAC opened and have never seen a freshman play like him.

We’re actually running a lot of high pick and roll as opposed to ISO. Dylan is so good with the ball he’s taking advantage of slow switches or simply beating them. At some point teams will run doubles (blitzes) at him and force him to pass it. Until then, I’ll take Dylan at the rim every possession. It’s getting us 80-90 pts every game.
