I hate the "I'm going with one guy and that's that" attitude. There's nothing wrong with picking a guy, and there's nothing wrong with going to the other guy, either, if things aren't working out quite so well. Now, I don't think "musical chairs" is the answer, either, but com'on. Pretty sure the HC of the defending national champs has NO issue with making changes on an team that, well, was undefeated thus far lol!

I have no real choice between Laviano or Rettig as yet. For four long years I watched every RU game knowing an INT was a baby breath away (especially in late quarter with pressure). I don't get that with either of the current guys and I'm grateful for that.

You all had some sort of preference, give me a break with that. Not saying you were vocal about it. Just curious how this shakes out.

That's where I stand too.

If the offense isn't going anywhere at all, I'd make a switch for the game to see if the other guy could do something. Most coaches do that. I think it's rarer to see someone pick ONE QB at the beginning of the season and stick with him no matter what happens.

Which coaches do that besides Spurrier? I'm assuming you'll be watching football Saturday? Lots of offenses will struggle, let me know who pulls their starter. Especially, in a game where they started as 20 plus point dogs. Heck, Meyer might be the best coach in the country and he stuck with a struggling Jones for 5 games despite having one of the most dynamic players in the country on the bench. Last year, I watched Meyer stick with a gimpy QB almost blowing their game with PSU because he refused to out Jones in.

Nova was better than Dodd but he should have been benched a few times . Kent and va tech come to mind .
I am ok with the Laviano decision , but he should have been benched earlier against penn stare and Ohio state

Nova was clearly the guy who should have started. He was also clearly the guy who should have been pulled at times.

Between Rettig and Laviano, all we know is it is obvious that we need to see more of Rettig.

Laviano should have clearly benched during the Induana game!
Actually, that was my honest opinion at the time.

Nova should have been sat down at the half against VaTech- even if he came back in, it would have helped. Nova had a strange KSU game. Every time I thought @ok, he gets one more series, then pull him" he had a good series. Every time he had a good series and I thought he may get on a roll, he f-Ed up again and it was like that the whole game.

PSU? Serious guys....he was not all that bad - 2 int's on him. Plenty of other reasons we didn't win that game but I never thought he should be pulled.

A very quick google search found guys pulled at Oregon and Minnesota this year. Plus I'd put Ohio State in the mix as well as I saw then do it a few weeks ago.

Trust me.. It happens

The results of this poll remind me why I have a healthy distrust of the media. The loudest, in your face, shouting down opposing viewpoints, ad hominem attacks on this board come from the pro-Flood and the "Rettig doesn't deserve a shot" crowds, which recent polls show are in the clear minority.

Happy Wednesday, everyone.

I was pro Dodd after his Soph season, but came around to accepting Nova as the better option.

I'm pro Rettig, but think Laviano has looked pretty good at times.

There were obvious times where Flood should have pulled Nova, and while I do see the reasoning in the one QB philosophy, it seems not giving Rettig more of a shot is being a bit stubborn. But let's see how it plays out. If Laviano does not step up in the next couple games I think Flood will prove himself more flexible then he lets on.

I'm really a starter+backup/starter+backup vote. The idea of finding out if you have the wrong starter is important... but so is developing a backup and stopping a QB from having a 6 INT game.

I have wondered why recent regimes have been so reluctant to give the backup some reps in garbage time. Last weekend was better than usual on that front. Otherwise I don't feel qualified to assume my judgement surpasses the coaches on who is most talented.

Does anyone seriously think not benching No a at times made him better?

I wanted Rettig at the start of the season, but right now I'd start CL. They were supposedly too close to call in camp, but since then CL has taken way more 1st team snaps in practice and practically all the game snaps. All I'm asking for now is that Rettig get one or two drives a game to ensure our backup is sharp and improving week to week. If he lights it up in his reps and CL isn't getting it done, then I'd be happy to expand his role. If not, at least we're developing two quarterbacks in case it's ever needed.

In my wildest dreams I would have never thought that 47 out of 68 would say they were more Pro Nova than Dodd. Is anyone buying that? This board was far tougher on Nova than they are on Laviano.

It makes sense when you consider that Laviano playing poorly has become a tertiary concern to the fact that our defense can stop no one and if we do make it down field, we cannot even make chip shots.

The argument was at the time (though it was BS) that Nova was the reason we were not a good team. Nova had his bad moments, to be sure, but he had 4 different OCs in 4 years, a coaching staff that didn't correct his footwork till he was a senior and that left him in a situation that caused him to be injured as a senior, and OL that was often questionable, and a defense that was gassed off the bat forcing him back on to the field.

The other thing is, Rettig is better than Dodd. So people have more reason to be mad. Dodd was the QB when we were blown out by 3 win UConn.

The UConn game where Carroo was injured? Did Nova play without Carroo? Inquiring minds want to know?

The QBs maybe close, but I have noticed in his limited action Rettig has had issues getting the play called in time. Not that Laviano is perfect but maybe he is more in control of the huddle and knows the playbook better. Also, Laviano has played pretty well except for last week - but pulling your QB for one bad game and benching him doesn't help anyone. Anyone who tries to rotate in 2 QBs seems to find that it doesn't work well. And if you pull Laviano after one bad game, wouldn't that make Rettig feel like he has no room for error and will get pulled if he has a bad game? At the college level a bad game from time to time for a first year started is pretty much inevitable unless you have some running system and a lot of freak athletes around you.

I don't know what we expect as fans - IMO if he does play you will likely see that Rettig isn't Tom Brady (when he was in college even Tom Brady wasn't the QB see in the pros). He will also be a 1st year starting D1 QB and will struggle at times as well. Will everyone be then calling for his benching and brining in the 3rd string guy? I think that the coaches feel they have to let the starter play a bunch to get better..... and based on the practice situation, Flood and Co have chosen Laviano over Rettig to be that guy. Unless you are at practices and watching film of how he goes through his progressions, I don't know how anyone can really be upset that Laviano is playing ahead of Rettig. Arm strength isn't the only thing the coaches look at when evaluating the QB.

I am not a fan of changing QBs. When you go with a guy you stick with him. The only way they get better is through game experience. It is bush league to pull a QB who is not having a great game. How often does that ever happen anywhere else. You have to let them play through adversity if you want them to get better. You all sound like a bunch of helicopter parents who want their kids to never loose and everyone gets a trophy. If they never face adversity they will never be able to handle themselves. I always hated when Schiano use to change QBs so regularly, or when he would run the wildcat for half a game. He would never let a guy get into a rhythm. I believe Rettig will be a good QB, but as of right now, the coaches (who watch these guys play everyday, as opposed to fans who seem them 1 day a week) feel that Chris is the guy. He has the experience, and he is getting better every game. They give Rettig garbage plays to get him use to game speed and gain experience, which is great. Come next year, hopefully, Rettig, if he is truly a better QB, will win the battle in the offseason. But until then he is our back up...deal with it.

I am a Rettig. I dont mind what Laviano is doing I just think Rettig has a bigger upside.

That said ive been around long enough to know how RU handles QB issues,,,,,
poorly
so , even though HE scored last game, I dont expect Rettig to get playing time
