Where P.J. Fleck might land after Western Michigan Job

Oregon isn't firing their coach this year. there are also rumors Lovie Smith hates the college game and might be one and done.

Even if Oregon did fire Helfrich, I'd think their sights would be set on a better name especially with the money they have. Purdue seems like a probable spot, Illinois as well if you what you say about Lovie is true. I could see Arizona/Mizzou even from that list above but I think Rich Rod's contract is somewhat prohibitive and would Mizzou fire their coach just after a year?

Whatever it is I think he should jump if he gets the chance.

I suspect Oregon will do whatever Uncle Phil wants. He might see PJ and immediately feel that's the future of Nike team gear commercials.

I'm biased but I think the Boilers are the perfect destination for PJ, because it's in his native recruiting zone and the facility upgrades are underway and the Big Ten partner money keeps growing. And he could conceivably still be able to move up to any job he wants if he turns Purdue around.

When you study his speech style, he seems to have mastered Neuro Linguistic Programming techniques.

Scott Frost probably will be in line for the Oregon HC position if it opens up.
Fleck might be looked at by Missouri if they are willing to buy out their first year HC , Purdue or Kansas

I don't see Purdue replacing Hazel with this years version of Hazel

I don't know if that's what'll happen but that logic makes sense. One caveat though is that it's not the same AD who made the Hazell hire. The same AD might not go back to the same well twice in a row but a new guy, who knows. I think the article said it was Mike Bobinski from GT, could even bring Paul Johnson along.

Unless Gtech is getting tired of PJ I can't see him leaving. It's a better program

Pj is a good guy and a good coach

It's got to be the right fit,
I'm higher on him than I used to be. All my HS coach friends thinks he's a great guy but he's. OT without baggage. My fear is he's one bad hire away from being screwed since he has 0 coordinator experience.

My only knock of Fleck is the whole ROW thing. He has propelled a motivational too into the shtick level. But it working, right? If Western Michigan were the Vikings or other ancient peoples whose warriors rowed to a battle, it would work better.

The guy can obviously coach and recruit better than most thought.

Missouri maybe. Scored 140 in two wins and lost the others. They could go winless the rest of the way without Kansas on the schedule. But they play AR. Kansas, not the same.
Purdue probably the best shot, if asked. Could rent a U-Haul and move himself and recruit at the same time.
Kansas - Why ? Losing promotes zero. Even with a suite for BB, not good enough. Pick me up on your way down type job.
Big decisions to be made.

If I were Fleck I'd stay far, far away from Kansas. No sense at this point in his career taking a job where failure is the norm. You don't want to find yourself starting from square one again 5 years from now.

Ya, seems like he is in a pretty good position, if I were him I would be very selective as to what my next job would be.

PJ definitly brings the energy and pumps up the fan base wherever he goes. Many call him Hareaugh Lite...A Schiano tree coach.

Just curious is there a chance that he comes here in 3 years if Ash gets a great offer elsewhere?

people here trashed Flecks name when job was open because he fired his last wife..like no other coaches are re married?..(current coach)

In 3 years heros can become bums. No doubt he's done a very good job building the program at WMU but if he takes on a very difficult multi year rebuilding job how much does it tarnish his image? No matter the situation is he the next best thing coming off consecutive 3-9 or 4-8 seasons?

Urban had it right when he advised Ash, Rutgers -> Syracuse... the two things you need to have to take a job is a fertile recruiting ground and some history of success. I think the recruiting part is even more true with PJ in that he's a recruiter first and foremost. He's not going to win with lesser talent and is winning now because he's putting together the Alabama equivalent of classes for that division.

He's an engaging guy but no way I'd want a non-coordinator at this level. Kids look at him and compare him to all these guys who know exactly what they're doing and say, 'No thanks." Purdue is a nightmare to recruit at with ND, OSU and Michigan surrounding them.

He's making $800K. I suppose if Purdue comes along offering $2.5 guaranteed over four years, you have to say yes but he won't move the needle, he'll just get rich.

The counter point would be ..hes been a head coach prior,in charge of a program, recruited well, even here at Rutgers, knows the landscape..vrs a Cord who has never been a HC, never been in charge of a program, not recruited area, does not know the landscape.
Guess time will tell the answer......too early at this point

the only think similar between hazell and fleck is they both coached in the mac. hazell coached for 2 years had a good year 2 and left for purdue. fleck goes 1-11 in year one and still has the best recruiting class in mac history. second year wins 8 games and has the 2nd best recruiting class in mac history. third year they win 8 games and a bowl game. first time western has ever had back to back 8 win seasons. first bowl win in western history. has the best recruiting class in the mac again. 4th year year 9-0 and rolling. has developed the talent he has recruited. the western oline would be one of the better ones in the b10.
