Do we think he will contribute or just be more of a practice player?

IMO, Until he actually works out, practices and plays with the other guys...it's all useless speculation....but, I'm sure someone will have strong opinions on his potential or should I say, lack thereof.

I think his name is Luke Nathan and I believe he played at Randolph. His team had a very good season. Hopefully he can improve by working with our staff. I have no real clue how much he will play but he is tall and gives us another center.

He played for Randolph and they finished 20-7. According to the Star Ledger stats he played 27 games and scored 365 points this past season averaging 13.5 ppg.

I don't know much about this kid but it seems like the staff thinks he's a walk on who may actually be given an opportunity to compete for a little bit of minutes:

“I think Luke has the chance to surprise some people this year and contribute immediately, and that was coach Pikells pitch for him to come to Rutgers, said Randolph coach Matt Tighe. “They are very limited with ‘bigs’ and Luke's desire to be better is something none of these scouting services can measure when predicting how a kid will impact a college program.”

could be a nice addition - it is always amazing what a prevailing attitude of strong / hard work & dedication can do to build up a team

Luke Nathan
Randolph, NJ
6 foot 10 inch - 180lbs (?)

Interesting comments from his HS coach - recurring theme of 'work ethic', 'hard work' & desire to learn & improve

"...his work ethic rubbed off on the younger guys and just make us better on a daily basis."
"...I believe that coach Pikell and his assistants are as good as any staff out there at developing big men."

"The thing about Luke that's been the most impressive is how hard he's worked.....Luke genuinely loves being out there with his teammates."

HUGELY IMPORTANT TO THIS TEAM

I do not expect many meaningful minutes from him, but there are times when for example both our centers have 2-3 fouls in the first half and we need a guy like him who can just hold the fort for 2 minutes to prevent us from being in awful foul trouble shape. These two minutes will mean the difference between a win and a loss.

180 lbs - maybe he should redshirt and see what his prospects look like after a year of S&C + going up against our other bigs. His contributions even during practice should not be under-estimated.

I hope he's the guy in white.

Hmmm ... that tall and he only averaged 13 points in a suburban league? Tom Everson II.

But this staff can coach, and if he puts on some weight he might at least be able to spell someone and play adequate defense. Could come in handy.

- there may have been reasons that his point totals were not off the charts -
According to his coach - "Offensively he gets double-teamed every touch so it allows our shooters to get open looks."
He also got 8.4 rebounds, and nearly three blocked shots per game and had triple-doubles against Kearny and Morristown in the first two rounds of NJSIAA North 1 Group IV.

Obviously not a kid that the top 20 teams were chasing - and as a walk-on he will just be a total bonus if he makes any sort of mark - but he may have some key intangibles that Pikiell & company can use to advantage - 6' 10" with hustle, pace-setting work ethic, smarts and a desire to unselfishly make a team better seems to fit into the Pikiell picture - chemistry, rapport, synergy, shared vision are random things - but it seems like incoming freshman 6'10" Luke Nathan & 6'10" Myles Johnson both have high intelligence, high desire and may spend a lot of time positively challenging each other & working on making each other better - ah, but who knows...

Randolph actually had some quality teams back in the 80's. They had a team led by a guy named Toney-El or something like that which upset Linden one year in the state tourney. Of course that was before Phil Colicchio took over.

Now Tom Everson was a name I remember well. I hope we get more production from this kid. lol

If anything, having another "tree" in the middle during practice can't hurt. If he can spell our bigs for a couple minutes when they get in foul trouble, that'd also be helpful from a walk-on.

I like the pick up of both Myles Johnson and Luke. No one expects much this year but both seem to have skills, smarts, and a desire to disprove doubters. Maybe 2019 is their breakout year.

I was a big Tom Everson fan back in the day. I really wanted the kid to do well and score. Poor guy was slow as molasses running uphill in January.
I remember being at the RAC, we were playing St. Joes I think. SJ goes on a fast break, Tom started slowly back to get on "D". We stole the ball and passed it to Tom who was at the top of the key (he didn't get very far going back on "D"). The whole place thought this was it. Power dunk time. St. Joes guard rockets back down court and strips Tom just as he's gathering himself to dunk. Felt bad for Tom at that moment.

Believe it or not, I remember that exact play.

I was in the RAC PAC, and we were pumped with anticipation seeing that opportunity unfolding for Everson.

Then it fell apart.
Ugh.

Crazy to remember such a play 30 odd years later.

Funny that is exactly what I was told.

Would add top flite academically.

This kid makes me feel safer going for a wing 3 point specialist with the last scholarship in case our bigs get injured

He seems like a quality kid. Had ivy league interest I believe.

Has Rutgers ever in their history had a 6 10 kid come to them and ask to be a walk on?

Great stuff. Best of luke on the Banks, Nathan!

humm - practice sessions could become interesting? - if the starters are working against Kiss, Geo Baker, Johnson, Nathan & several others - just a thought - but it has been said that these new guys are very 'coachable' - with high energy /work ethic - high intelligence (on & off court) and very high level of 'team' dedication - may not see their uniforms on the court all that much (or not at all) this year - but their impact should be there

In the early 80's they had a pretty good team. If I remember they had two guys who might have been D1 players. Could have been Daryll Aiken and Tony McIntosh. I think McIntosh went to Fordham??

Can't teach 6'10" so as a walk-on there are only positives here. That being said Morris County basketball pretty much sucks compared to the rest of the state. There's Mendham, Chatham, and then everyone else.

Mo-town use to be good, not any more? What about Delbarton? Have they gone downhill too? I know what a great job Bags had done at Mendham.

I'm a coach at Chatham so I know the lay of the land in Morris County . Overall Morris County is not close to some of the other counties but the top teams can hang with a lot of others on a given year .

For instance we've beaten a bunch of good teams out of County the last few years in season and states such as Orange multiple times , Rahway , Snyder , Scotch Plains , etc . We've also been won the County back to back and been in the final 5 of the last six .

Morristown has been good the last five years and made a run in the states two years ago and Randolph has also been very good as well so every year someone else can pop up . Delbarton is getting better again after they they were down awhile and mendham has been down the last few years .
