Who is to Blame? Mehringer or Limited Talent Pool

Boy, that was painful to watch. At least the weather was nice. Indiana did everything they could to give Rutgers a reasonable opportunity to get a win, and Rutgers still could not get it done. I'm curious what everybody's thoughts are on who is to blame for our offensive problems - what percentage is due to uninspired play calling by Mehringer and what percentage is due to a limited player talent pool?

Neither gets off the hook when things look this bad. But lack of talent is the bigger issue by far to me.

IMO, as much as we struggle on O it's difficult for me to say the fault is mainly on Mehringer. The formations are not vanilla so I can see he's trying. Some personnel decisions up until this point confuse me but I don't know if that's his decision or Ash's.

The Indiana Receivers were making catch after catch. We had three important dropped balls, Patton at the end of the game, Goodwin on a crossing route and another important one, I think it was Timis. Not to mention the TE stepping out of bounds and coming back in.

Indiana realized they could play the run and cheat up.

we don't have the horses in the trenches.
you don't fix that in a season. you can ask the question after every single game and the answer is the same.
Gio is far better QB at reading and taking the hits when needed, which made this game more watchable than others at least for me.

until we get serviceable lines in the trenches, expect more of the same.
plus, like the above poster, WRs dropping catchable balls and not physical enough to go out of bounds when necessary did not help today. not to mention weak secondary on pass D. we got a long way to go in term of both recruiting the required talent and developing them in time.

-We do not stretch the field often enough.

-We went into a run run pass shell in the 2nd half.. not doing a play-action until way way too late where the fake was not believable because we were down by nine with a few minutes left.

-We sent Hicks sideways several times.. that's not his thing

-We still have that silly sprint left pass thing in the playbook.. UNBELIEVABLE

-Gio played nervously after the fumble.. every exchange was *off* after that

-We still throw and ball 3 yards when we need 6.. worse yet, out tallest receiver, Patton, had a mismatch in height with his defender many times.. not one little fade route.. and Patton sent on this silly do nothing route because Gio was sprinting out the other way... now.. I do not know if it is a poor play design.. but Patton should be running every route a if he is the hot target....and those lays.. he barely left the LOS before turning and becoming a spectator.

Yeah.. it is the OC and how well the offense is coached.

We have now lost four winnable games, Iowa, Illinois, Minny and Indiana. Was not a talent gap but really poor coaching. Three timeouts because no clue. Horrendous play calling on offense. Poor play by D backs. Four turnovers, two blocked kicks and we loose... Sorry but making Flood look good.

I'm sorry, there was definitely a talent gap today. We got lucky with turnovers and their crappy special teams. Both of their lines were better. They have better receivers and better playmakers in general. Their qb had all day to throw.

Both.

However a good coach is able to take the pieces he has, as limited as they might be, and find a way to use them to their best capabilities.
Agree totally. It might not be enough to win, but moving the ball somewhat certainly helps keeping us in the game. Need to make 4-5 yards on first down and find a way to move the sticks. Can't afford to have any negative plays period.

Some of You are clueless....

We could hardly score last year and we lost our best player

And what did you expect?

The stop watch speed on offense other than Harris (and grant when healthy) is alarming subpar....

Take your head out of the sand people

It was bad play along with questionable coaching.

Talent gap which will take 3 years to resolve...AND a green OC who will not adjust the offense to better suit our players' abilities....hich is why we're going o-fer the conference this year.

What offense is good for slow WR's?

Gio couldn't run so we looked like a Laviano led team.
It was obvious he us still injured and could not run so we lost half of what he brings. Still better than CL. He is in there for the last few games.

Actually, the biggest problem this year was losing Grant. We had four winnable games(31/2) without him and we may very well have won three of them if we had him in the line up. Think of that, instead of 2 and 7 we could be either 4&5 or 5&4 and the narrative here would be very different.

the team is what it is, Grant could have helped but in the end its very likely we are still 2-7

Don't misunderstand my point. I am not wishful thinking here as much as I am addressing the tone of the threads. Everyone is so down on either or both the players and the staff, plus Flood is getting blamed for everything. Grant's presence may very well have changed everyone's opinions on just about everything.

I can't agree with you on this. He is a playmaker and a game changer. Also, he was the guy the opposition had to game plan for. His absence is, to quote Bernie, "huge"

We don't have the field - stretching type wide outs

We were in four games including today. Coach should find a way to win one. We have not done that. Can't argue talent. Its poor coaching.

I will never blame the team. Never!! Ash and company came here knowing full well of who made up the roster. Develop the kids you have now and recruit the kids you want tomorrow. This coaching staff has made serious mistakes throughout the year that has nothing to do with the talent. The kids we have on this roster were not recruited for the power spread. Next year things will get better.

While our OC is learning on the job, and everyone last week was happy with them, we simply don't have the horses. The difference between our playmakers in there playmakers, today, was incredibly obvious. Anyone not seeing that is simply blind or doesn't want to see it.

Dude did you expect a big season ? You are delusional. 2 to 3 wins was the expectation . The world picked us last for a reason.

A few of the posters blaming the coaches, in this thread, are the same posters who refused to blame that moron Fudd for anything, and refuse to blame his recruits for anything now.

Also we are absolutely handicapped right now at quarterback. The only guy we have, with a pulse, is playing injured. Maybe some of you guys are too blind to realize that, too, who knows.

Is there another rivals venue where the posters accept the reality of who we are what we are dealing with and remember how long we gave Schiano to establish his brand ? Having said that we gave Iowa Minny and and Indy all they could handle in spite of a new coach a new staff a bare cupboard and an impatient fan base ? ::stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye::stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye::stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: We are on the right road but the road is long.

Watching some of the Penn State game here and seeing Saquon Barkly.. who switched from Rutgers t Penn State during recruiting... you have to know that he wasn't alone.

Schiano left Rutgers in a spot where guys like that were willing to think about Rutgers.. even commit to Rutgers early... but Flood's coaching and style of play and results eventually turned them all off... so they went elsewhere.

It prolly started with QBs who knew there was no real competition here... then WRs who knew the QB couldn't get them the ball and the playcalling was too conservative.. then came the RBs and OL who did not want to play for such a poor offense.
