I think it has to be Cam. Cliff will be too heavily guarded and unless he gets an easy dunk, it's not going to end well. They need to have some plays made up just for this situation to get Cam open.

Simpson has ice in his veins and can make his own shot. Him or Paul is who I would.

Put the ball in Mulcahy's hands and trust him to make the right play.
This is the beat answer

For me it's high ball screen Paul and Cliff with Cam spacing the floor to Paul's dominate right hand or run off ball screen as Paul and Cliff do the PnR so if it's not there you get a Cam 3.

We ran this type of action twice against WF early second half and got Cam open 3's

It will not be 1 player. Pike has set up great plays out of timeouts , a lot involving setting back screens for Cliff dunks. He also has Cam coming around a double screen for a baseline 15-18 footer. But Caleb , Paul and even Mag can be set up to use their size and back down defenders for a bucket. Pike has many more options this year so making it harder on the defense that knew Ron or Geo were getting the ball late and others are standing still and clearing out. All 5 of our players will be on Motion on offense with proper spacing making it very difficult for our defenders. That is the big difference offensively for this team this year.

The answer should be Spencer because he is the best shooter but he needs teammates to pass him the ball for a open 3 pointer.Without a set play Mulcahy will have the ball as the shot clock reaches less than 10 seconds and nobody knows who will take the last shot which has plus/minus implications.

You can make a case for anybody really. But if I were to base it off of shooting percentage and mental fortitude, I’d probably go with Aundre. Those foul shots last year in Indiana were stone cold and he’s offensive minded enough where I’d be okay if he took the shot.

Close second would be Caleb in rhythm. If he is wide open and has too much time, I feel like he almost thinks about it too much versus relying on muscle memory.

Cliff, if he can actually get the ball deep in the post would be nice too, but we seem to have trouble with that even without the game on the line.

As for Cam and Derek, I need to see more against top competition. Paul can make the clutch pass, but I don’t know about the shot just because he doesn’t shoot enough in general. (Which he should)

Hyatt has missed 2 layups and an open 3 in crunch time so far this season just off the top of my head

Touché. That is true. I’ll give you that.
I don’t remember the open three, but I envisioned him taking a jumper or three.

He missed the layup(s), but in his defense, I feel like those type of end game shots are a totally different experience than a jumper to win it. It’s so frantic and quick that you don’t really have time to get nervous. Just gotta rely on muscle memory, which clearly didn’t work out that time.

Right now - call should prob be:

Cam screen for Paul drive attempt. if the lane is not there Caleb is set up for pass off the drive attempt in his mid range territory and post screen Cam drifts back for a kick back pass in 3 point range as a last resort. But his shot isn’t the one I really want there unless we need 3 points. I want Caleb’s mid range or Paul cutting the lane because statistically, Cliff and Mag get more put backs off of those if they don’t go.

I dont know how anyone can say Hyatt should take these shots

Its Cliff or Paul
Agree on Hyatt. I don’t even want him on the floor there. I want our 3 best ball handlers and rebounders.

It’s really hard to run a successful play to get Cliff the ball down low in that situation with a turnover prone team. Too much risk of that pass getting picked.

Actually, it depends on what the score is

Teams don’t want to lose the game on the last possesion on defense

If we are tied or down one …no one wants to foul…and no one wants to foul a 95% free throw shooter

So Cam gets my vote there

If we are down two or three …it shoukd be Paul off of ball screen action

I don't want to say Hyatt, but it is him or Caleb. Hyatt has no problem taking shots (whether bad or good) and this is actually to his detriment overall, but for taking a last shot you need someone who has the will to do so and try to create - and that is him. Caleb can create a little but is not a great shooter. Cam cannot really create, Cliff is way too uncertain at this point and I just don't think it's Paul's game.

Bottom line as has been discussed here this a hole that Pike didn't even come close to filling after Geo and Ron left. One day it may be Simpson, but his game a little too crazy as it stands today.

Bottom line is there are no good answers to this question - as we do not have a Go To player on this team offensively.

Neither are good shooters - but Caleb’s shooting stats are better than Hyatt’s. And he’s played against less cupcakes.

He may have ice in his veins but he is shooting 40% from 2 and 28% from 3.
Simpson does have ice in his veins and can create his own shot. Yes his shooting percentage is mediocre but you get the sense it will greatly improve as he gains more experience and confidence.

As I said there are no good options. But this is who I think the 2 are if I had to choose. Most likely just going to be a different guy every night.

Paul needs to be on the floor and get ball to Caleb, Derek or Cam in shooting position.

GO RU

The great thing about this thread is we have mentioned all 5 starters and 2 off the bench as possible last shot takers. And that makes it difficult for opposing teams to predict and guard. Last year we really only had two answers to the last shot question! Go us!

McConnell. He can at least create a shot if nothing is there.
He sees the floor well. Even when his shots are not falling. Outside of a putback on a lay up, Caleb’s shot selection gives us by far the best chance of an offensive board from Cliff or Mag down low.

Hyatt’s shot selection is the complete opposite. He’s pretty good at following his own shot for an offensive board but he never seems to be aware of where other teammates are positioning wise - or at least, he doesn’t seem to take it into account when deciding whether to shoot or pass.

Cam, Caleb, Dre, outside
Derek driving
Cliff inside lobe

Who should it be, or who will it be?

Should be Cam or Caleb.

Will be Hyatt, because he’s never met a shot he doesn’t like.
