Who do you think leaves the program and do you think we would be able to nab one of the transfers? I mean we just lost KJ, and I figure kids from Iowa State will be leaving and looking to go somewhere and we can offer PT to a kid. Just a thought I had

Many of their better players transferred there. Why would they leave a program with the potential to win the Big 12 for a program that will struggle to be competitive in the B1G?

Hey a guy can wish can't he lol? Never know if they do not like the new coach and we offer pt why not

Anyone have an idea who Iowa State is gonna hire?
Murray State’s Steve Prohm might get it.
He' young ( 40) and has a 104-29 record there , after being hired in 2011,with one Dance appearance

T.J. Otzelberger (37), Hoiberg’s top assistant has the ISU AD's support but the school's President wants to look at other options before making a decision
TJ was with ISU from 2006 to 2013 as an assistant , then went to Washington ( 2013-2015) to be top assistant there.
Was considered one of the top HC candidates from the assistant ranks while at Washington, but wound up back at ISU this season.

Then there is always Jeff Capel whose name is mentioned a lot in coaching searches
Archie Miller's always is in the mix, but might be to expensive to buy out his contract , he just renewed till 2022 for 1.5 Mil a year

It's has to be Danny Hurley's job if he wants it....maybe some of the diehard Hurley fans can offer up a comment.

Another example of unfairness as coach can abandon his team in June after the semester is over and players have to sit out a year. Joke.

I'm a huge Hoiberg fan -- have been since he was a player at ISU -- and I'm really disappointed by this. I thought he'd be a Cyclone for life. I've adopted Iowa State as my second team and have enjoyed watching them. I hope they can sustain their success after this year now that he's gone. They're gonna be a Top 10 team in 2015-16, though.

Iowa State's AD Pollard said in May that Hoiberg has always said from day one that his lifelong goal has been to coach in the NBA,” - http://amestrib.com/sports/men-s-ba...berg-s-lifelong-goal-nba#sthash.aQkLNcMz.dpuf

What are your thoughts on a school who recruits a mid major level player redshirts him and helps him develop into a competent player along with a college graduate and watches him leave to go to play for a higher level level Program in Year 5.

Loyalty is a door which swings both ways.

Relatively recent phenomenon no? Do not mind students athletes finally gaining some leverage. Guessing players who are forced out far out weigh the 5th year seniors. Door does not swing equally.

"Loyalty is a door which swings both ways."
But for some loyalty is left in an instant, others leaving ( that loyalty) have to sit a year.
Not all players are granted immediate eligibility and can go to any school they are thinking of transferring to.

When it comes to comparing Coach's leaving and players leaving programs, there is a big difference in most cases.
The ability of going anywhere they want is ( just about ) guaranteed to coaches that leave, players are at the mercy of the school they are leaving
( in just about every case).

I'm sorry but I don't feel bad for the players. Stop committing to the coach and start committing to the school. When you sign your LOI sign it with the knowledge that it's unlikely that your coach will be there in 5 years. This is not a new phenomenon. There is ample evidence in all of these recruits' lifetimes that this will be the case.

If Ames Iowa isn't your place to be then don't go. if it is then great !

"Player development" by way of coaches is overrated. Bring is a kid who has a supporting family atmopshere, has evidence of being a good player, loves the game, gets decent grades, has a work ethic and doesn't need external stimuli to create it, and he will develop well. Just watch.

Doesn't have as much to do with EJ as we think. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. Same goes for basketball. You can lead a player to water, but you can't make him blossom if he doesn't have the necessary background that is meant for it to happen.

The winner is Murray State’s Steve Prohm .
ISU picked him and now I would guess T.J. Otzelberger will be leaving. Iowa State.
Might end up in the Windy City , but think a College program will go after him hard.

NCAA/Company line which is frankly a crock.

If you don't believe that coaches play a major role in Player Development we'll just have to disagree on that.

IMO they play an enormous role.

Can't agree with this. You spend far too much time with your coach, who has a direct impact on how much you play or don't, along with personality fit, etc.

While committing to a school sounds good on its face, there is simply too much attachment with a coach for it not to be the main consideration.

Actually sort of two sides to this coin -

For virtually any prospective true student-athlete the best advice is often - find a school where you will be comfortable - socially , academically, geographically - so much so that - even if you wake up one day and find that, for one reason or another, you are no longer participating in your chosen sport - you still are happy with your choice. So, yes there needs to be a 'commitment' to the school.

However, the student-athlete is well advised to also make sure that they have a comfort level with the coach - and that the coach's strategy and philosophy and temperament is a match with their skill set and approach to their sport. So, as long as your sport of choice is going to be a large part of your college life, the match with the coach is critical.

You can't do that IMO----Coaches change for a variety of reasons-----the Assistants who you do most of your drill and development work with change. It's the nature of the profession.

The School is a constant----socially , geographically and culturally.
