Would a different coach actually bring in more NIL here or would it make no meaningful difference?

Basically my question is Pike now the reason our NIL is as bad as it is this year?

part of me thinks after the disaster of a season with Ace and Dylan that big time donors won't give to pike anymore (dead money etc...) but another part wonders even if we had another coach would it make any difference at all. After all Rutgers sports always struggled to raise money.

So would really be better off with another coach or will we still be bottom in BIG in NIL?

According to Richie via his source, we had donors lining up to contribute last year only to close up their wallets because of the tax code.

This was was our most anticipated basketball season ever, where everyone knew we only had 1 year with Ace/Dylan.

Assuming this is true (I do question the validity of the source) then that should tell you enough.

A new coach will not make a meaningful difference in NIL.

The right coach could, but I doubt the university would pony up for “that” coach, so no, I don’t think any coach we would get will fare any better with NIL.

Winning comes first. People don’t buy into losers, whether stocks or basketball teams.

Pike blew this year and hasn’t done much for almost a decade, so fans aren’t lining up to invest.

People here whine about out scant NIL being due to cheap fanbase. Bullshit. Why pay and waste their money ? That’s not how the world works. They’ll pay up at church because they have faith. They have no faith in Pike, nor should they the way this season played out.

It’s clear Pike stalled out. Other programs fire mediocre coaches but we give ours raises and extensions, rewarding ‘below average’ and don’t vie for anything noteworthy. That applies to Mr. K Choppin and his .500 record too.

i don’t think any coach can make a difference in nil here unless that coach has personal connections and support by a few whales who may or may not have a rooting interest in rutgers. In other words, it would come in a bundle, new coach brings nil.

The only example I can figure would have been taking a chance on Pitino when he went to Iona
A good portion of the fan base would have protested, another part would have reacted positively
He would have been able to draw donors as necessary
Only problem was that this was pre NIL to start, and would have required RU to keep him till that and beyond

He just had a catastrophically bad season, a season with the most hype at Rutgers in multi-generations.

He is not recovering from that. Been saying it since December and this portal season confirms it. He is gone in 11 months.
This is why a different coach won't matter...if they couldn't find money to bring in transfers last year of all years. That should answer your question, so much hype nationally for Ace and Dylan, more press than Rutgers basketball has ever gotten. They didn't even have enough money to bring in a serviceable big man and Zach martini was the top incoming transfer. Pack it up, who is going to want to coach here? Hope pike is able to find a better gig .

That would've worked but this is New Jersey...Home of the holyest of the holy, people would have been outraged about him smashing groupies in restaurant bathrooms and providing strippers for recruits..Having a winning team isn't worth hiring someone like that 🙄

That’s on Pike. In my opinion he is one of the worst coaches in the Big and a horrible promoter.

Maybe, I would like to see at least some type of effort on social media. Basketball team in the NYC area has so many opportunities to become popular. I know they are supposedly going back to Nike, hope they change the imagery and uniforms. These are things that wouldn't cost much. Have an intense practice scrimmage? invite basketball social media influencers, crazy highlights or dunks in games or practice? Make it go viral on social media, become a popular brand. Social media is the cheat code ..

You need more NILplain and simple . Our alums and non alums in Jersey don’t care enough about Rutgers sports to put their collective hands in their pockets. Case closed. Go
To New England or down south or out west and they support their teams with $$$. New Jersey has one of the highest incomes per household so it’s a real shame. The excuse goes something like this I got royally screwed by my senior economics professors so I won’t give them a penny.
Basically I go back to my original statement, they don’t care about Rutgers sports.

How did Schiano get by the tax code issues from his donors?

ironically, he’s now coaching at the holyest of the holy and they had no problem hiring him.

I am not sure it would make a difference. If RU could reallocate a portion of the coach's salary on top of the amount provided for inthe house settlement, I could make the case for hiring a coach on the cheap and reallocate the residual amount to the pro player pool. If the forces that be are determined to make the college game a poor replica of professional sports then it should adopt the same model where many players make more than the coach. What is the value of the coach if money is the driving force behind the decision of where the mercenary plays? I long for the days where Myles Johnson came to RU because of its engineering program. It was not that long ago.

The reality is that RU is cementing its place in the bottom third of the Big 10 even with the house settlement. Until pay for play becomes more like the intended NIL with some belts and suspenders around it we would all be better off finding better situations to invest our time in.

I can tell you that’s a real issue. People with money who make donations almost exclusively do so to 501c3’s.

But these aren’t really donations. It’s buying players.

As Frank Zappa once said, "This is the crux of the biscuit."

And the reason Myles transferred was to go to a better engineering grad program...and closer to home, not a bag of money. Yes, those days are gone.

Dont forget - and to go to school for free.
That's a bag of money.

Is he transferring to UCLA if they didn't offer a scholarship?
Is he coming to Rutgers in the first place if we aren't offering a scholarship?

Athletes have always made decision based on money.
When was the last time someone turned down a scholarship from a better school?

A kid could grow up a life long Rutgers fan and hating Syracuse.
But if Syracuse offered a scholarship and Rutgers didn't? Where do you think that kid is going?

No one trusted Pike and they were proved right! No one gave money to St. John’s in 30 plus years until Pitino showed up .

You need the right coach who delivers the right message that people believe and trust.

I agree Pitino would have gotten significant donations when necessary
Of course we will never know for sure

Great question. Short answer is No. This has always been an issue for Rutgers. Any new coach, outside of a few that RU would never hire and they would never be interested, the head coach at RU is going to have very little impact on fundraising. Winning is the only thing that helps and obviously they have dug a small hole the past two years. Any new coach is going to have the same problems.

And he would never come here.
we aren't talking now, or at the time of the St Johns hire, but when Iona took the chance

I don't know how many options he had when he took over Iona

If you want to compare the two programs, we are a big ten team playing a higher profile level
Pretty sure we could have out paid Iona
Would have been a better offer here, imo

You may know of a specific reason he wouldn't have come to RU then, I can't see it
Pitino was a risky and sketchy hire for any school

Pitino wouldn’t touch this job with a 5000’ pole. We couldn’t get Danny Hurley, when he was at Rhode Island, and some think we could pull Pitino? Ha Ha Ha. Coaches like that want to see a track record of support. They want to see facilities.

They’re not going to come to a place that hasn’t provided adequate NIL support in the past. This place is viewed as unserious and a waste of time for the best coaches.

You would need to take a chance on an up and comer, and i wouldn’t be willing to take that chance. Ride Pike till the end of his contract because it doesn’t make sense to pay two coaches when the fanbase isn’t willing to provide the NIL Support.

Pitino was named the head coach at Iona in March of 2020. Rutgers had just finished a 20-11 season that would have put them in the NCAA tournament for the first time in 30 years.

You’re saying at that time, Rutgers should have fired Pike and hired Pitino?

Think of the schools he’s been at the past few jobs. He would never ever come here. 1) RU would never entertain it. 2) He wouldn’t be able to do what he does.

You can all dream about it but RU is never going to hire a guy who has consistently broke rules and does not portray the image they want. RU is not a win at all cost university for athletics.

No
The question was, could a coach get significant NIL at RU
My answer was, Pitino, at that moment in time

Of course we were not going to fire Pike after a good season

This is just for conversation about who could have gotten NIL for RU

As a side note, no program of worth wanted Pitino then, you must have forgot
No big ten, SEC programs, no one

I think he would have chose RU over Iona
But as mentioned above Pike was secure here at that point

Al seems to imply that Iona's Hynes Athletics Center with a whopping capacity attendance of 2,578, practice facilities and generous fanbase are no match for Rutgers in the theoretical discussion posed here.

Nope! With the current NIL situation, goal simply needs to be to hire a GM with financial background with the ability to unravel RU alumni with Wall St ties searching for a hedge fund guru or similar super rich person(s). Of course, legal background as well to handle the NIL contracts. Wow,
Isn’t this fun, many thanks to the NIL pioneers for ruining college sports! No need to blame Pike for this NIL puzzle because this is way over his pay grade. So long to recruiting and developing players! That chapter is over!

That won’t be the role of the GM. The role of the GM will be to manage the salaries and contracts of the players, financial aspect of recruiting, budgeting, and NIL Licensing with vendors.
