Just seems like this team has a lack of cohesion and it shows. Call it chemistry, or whatever, it just seems like they aren’t blending. It’s “feels” off.

Thought the Africa trip might have brought them closer, get to know each other, but it’s like they are not on the same page.

That was the feeling I got from Paul and Cam last year. It didn’t appear they got along with the team. Very strange.
I always thought there was friction between Caleb and Cam last year.

On Paul, it's been documented that there were issues and that he was somewhat neglectful of his captain responsibilities.

Regardless, we are not better off without them !

i don’t think it’s so much a chemistry issues as it is a lot of new pcs and people getting used to playing with one antiher …

It’s not a chemistry problem. It’s a rebounding issue. A massive one. Check how many second point chances Wake got yesterday. Everyone keeps talking about Paul and Cam and the offense. Cliff is lost without a physical body who isn’t clueless (aka Wolf) out there boxing out. The loss of Caleb and no Mag out there is more than just their own rebounding stats. It’s a loss of physical presence. Cliff clearly is unable to dominate as a stand alone feature player. He needs a surrounding cast of body bangers crashing the glass because he can’t fight through 2 on 1s.

Maybe this is why we don't see Mag. Is he even practicing with the team anymore?

The team problem isn't limited to rebounding and chemistry. Its also a coaching problem not properly installing a half court offense that best utilizes the skillset of the players. Its a recruiting problem not having one go to scorer on the court that can prevent long scoring droughts. Its a player development problem where players need to show improvement year to year.Cliff is a perfect example with terrific athleticism but the skillset is still limited on offense.

Sure there are other issues. But the bottom line is the score in this game was lopsided for 2 reasons:

1) the ridiculously poor start with unforced turnovers leading to an 18-3 deficit to start the game.

2) dreadful rebounding leading to a mound of second chance Wake points (including drawing fouls and scoring from the charity stripe.

Yes - the assist to turnover ratio is pathetic. And 8 total assists in a game is awful. We don’t have a transition game to speak of and no go to scorer. Lots of areas to be concerned about for sure.

But despite all that, we battled back to within 2. The reason it fell apart was our inability to get a stop because we couldn’t secure rebound. Our first shot defense actually looks pretty good. They scored or got fouled almost every time they grabbed an offensive board. They had 15 of those and outrebounded us in aggregate by a margin of 12. Without Mag, I’m not sure we have the horses to fix this, but that right there is the biggest problem.

Time for Pike to make tough decisions and shorten the rotation. Too much in and out for guys. And it might ruffle some feathers if guys see that JMike or Gavin are playing more, but so be it.

Maybe I'm in the minority but while I don't want the team to get embarrassed, I don't have a lot of angst about it, when I know next year the RAC is going to be Disney Land.

The shortening of the rotation would take Gavin out. He has been the worst player in it, and it isn't even close.

You can not be upset at our rebounding and getting physically beat and then roll Gavin out there.

Huh? Those 2 were a combined 1-7. Davis did have 4 assists so I’ll give you that considering it was half of our total. I’m not sure how anyone is unhappy that Gavin didn’t play more in this game. He was awful. Yes - other guys were bad too but he was brought in at times when we had cut the gap and killed us on the glass allowing put backs. Several of them.

To me the game ended when it was about 56-48? We defended great for the entire possession. Our guards harrassed them and they were trying to initiate offense 30 feet from basket. They take a last second shot that missed. The ball slipped out of Cliff's hand. They missed again. Cliff didn't get rebound again and they made the 3 from the corner.

I knew it was officially over.

This. I’m getting impatient and want to know what the deal is with Mag. Typically I’m not a believer that one guy would make much of a difference but I’m starting to lean towards this being an exception. 20 or so minutes or Mag on the floor would drastically upgrade the rebounding effort. We’re badly missing him and Caleb tapping the ball out to keep possessions alive. On the other end, I believe Cliff would look like a different player with opponents having to deal with him in the paint.

Then there’s the press. We’re running it anyway despite having the master of it out there. Add Mag and the ability to create offense from defense sky rockets.

But is he going to play? What is going on?

I posted a few weeks ago it was a chance he wouldn't play based on strange answers from Pike. I am now at 40/60 we see him this year. A few more games he says why play 1 1/2 more seasons with this one being a throw away. In addition does it make sense for Mag to be back next year with all the new faces and the youth movement?

To me Mag coming back is everything for the season.
1. What he brings on the court
2. Taking the players off the court he replaces
3. Maybe Gavin is more playable alongside mag

If Mag doesn’t play, he’ll have screwed us worse than Paul and Spencer.

There was a similar sequence when Hyatt was at the line with a chance to cut it to 2 points. He missed the second FT but Derek swooped in to grab the offensive rebound. He seemed to have it but a WF player got his hands on the ball and a quick whistle made it a tie-up and Wake had the possession arrow.

If we held onto that rebound we could have cut it to 1-point or tied it. Instead WF came down and scored and we were down by 5 or 6 again. We never did get to within 1 or tie, so for me that was a deflating moment.

I am torn.....
Half of me says what NJH said...Eugene played on a bad knee, Paul played banged up, Caleb played with a broken back. WTF Mag.

Other half....Pike makes $4,000,000 per year. Rutgers is gettting millions from the B1G, Idiots are paying $30 park to watch the players. I probably have 2 years left to monetize my basketball ability why would i come back and possibly reinjure. Why not montize a bit further and quite possibly a lot better.

Nope sorry. He could have decided to sit the year out in the off season to market himself and that would’ve been fine. With the money comes a commitment that makes backing out and screwing your team over even worse.

but they're not trying to play with each other. It's the continued one on one ball that lacks movement and passing. Zero effort on the board to box out and space. Quite the mess.

Agree with all the issues mentions. All these issues disturb me way way way more than being told "Princeton could be a quad 1 loss" comforts me.

Have to disagree here. I believe it is actually negative not zero right now.

It’s not about who is playing well — no one is. It’s about developing talent that’s going to be here next year and beyond. I’d rather lose playing the kids a lot of minutes than lose playing guys who are only here for one year.

You're right about the rebounding but Gavin's getting zero help from the oldest players on the team. The turnover credited to him early in the game was because Noah gave him a terrible pass that he had to stretch for and his foot touched the sideline. And two possessions in a row Hyatt could've used his body to set Griffiths up for a shot and he just didn't.

He’s still only shooting 30% from three. He’s not a plus defender by any stretch of the imagination. Poor rebounder and not a ball handler. Any argument for him to play more comes from recruiting hype. Imagine what his stats would look like without the Boston U game.

I am sure my memory is faulty, but I can’t remember a single time our point guard Noah played pick & roll with Cliff. It is one of the most basic plays in basketball that just about everyone uses and plays to Cliff’s strengths, and I can recall us running it once.

In my eyes...it is Hyatt or Gavin. If we had a real 4........

Gavin hurt us defensively early a lot because he is defending the easiest guy and it forces Hyatt to defend someone he isn't equipped to handle.
