Team Captain and highest ranked RU golfer the past 2 years, Xavier Marcoux, was not in lineup for the 1st time in a Medal Play tourney since arriving at RU in 2019.

The team played in the same pairings as #2 Auburn, #31 Duke, and #58 UNCG. After a strong start that saw the team stand -5 at one point, they finished Day 1 Even Par which puts them in a tie for 9th out of 14.

RU was led by Noah Kumar who, after a 2-0 record in the B1G Match Play, continued his strong Spring start with a 3 Under 69, good enough for T11. Luke Wells shot an Even Par round followed by Weston Jones +1 and Frosh James Newton +2. Rhett Sellers was +5 but his score doesn't count for the team being only the Top 4 are used. Frosh Logan Paczewski, playing as an individual, also came in at +2.

Top 5

#58 UNCG....-15
#39 Cinn.......-13
#12 Virginia....-8
#31 Duke........-8
West Virginia.-6

#2 Auburn is in a Tie for 6th at -3

Round 2 is tomorrow with the final Tuesday.

Do we know why Marcoux was not in the lineup? Injury?

Day 2 is complete. Led by Noah Kumar being 5 Under and Luke Wells 4 Under after only 6 holes, Rutgers started like a house a fire reaching 9 Under for the day and tourney. Things didn't go as well over the next 7-8 with RU dropping to -3 before rebounding to finish the day -6 and -6 for the tournament.

The Knights find themselves in a 5 way tie for 8th heading into tomorrow's final round.

Wells led RU with an outstanding 5 Under 67, followed by Kumar's 69. Weston Jones shot Even Par while Rhett Sellers shot +2. James Newton came in at +8 while playing as an individual, Logan Paczewski shot +2. At -6 Kumar stands T14 with Wells right behind him at -5, is T17.

Top 5 after 2 Rounds

1. #39 Cincinnatti....-32
2. #31 Duke...............-28
3. UNCG....................-20
4. Augusta................-15
5. #12 Virginia...........-12

BTW, While this tourney has 2 of the Top 12 participating, there is one out in Las Vegas right now that has 9 of the Top 25 including 8 of the Top 15.

The Men's team picked up today where the Women's team left off yesterday.

Rutgers used some clutch performances at the end catching and passing West Virginia to finish 7th out of 14. Starting with Frosh James Newton who came from 5 Over after 10 holes to work all the way back to Even Par. The run started with an eagle 2 on a 420 yard Par 4 and finished with 3 Birdies in his last 6 holes including one on his 17th. Then Rhett Sellers and Weston Jones both Birdied the Par 5 last hole and Luke Wells birdied his 18th hole, a 215 yard Par 3 to secure 7th by 2 strokes. Sellers, who also had an Eagle, led the team with a 4 Under 68, followed by Jones' 69 and Wells a 70. Noah Kumar shot a 73 while playing as an individual Logan Paczewski shot 77. Rutgers' 9 Under score was their best of the tourney as they improved each day. Wells was RU's top finisher at -7, good for T16 while Noah Kumar finished -5 and T24 out of 91 golfers.

Rutgers was ranked 6th highest coming in so 7th is about where you'd expect but they were without their #1 and highest ranked
player.

Final Top 8

1. #39 Cincinnatti..........-44
2. #31 Duke.....................-36
3. #58 UNCG....................-31
4. #152 Augusta..............-27
5. #12 Virginia.................-22
6. #2 Auburn...................-17
7. #97 RUTGERS..............-15
8, #119 West Virginia......-12

Augusta had won 2 D1 National Championships back when Patrick Reed was a star there. They seemed to be having a rough '22-'23 season till now.

Since all us old farts play golf and caddied, let’s us use some perspective.
Everyone of these kids has the ability to go out at +5 and come in even!
When was the last time any of us idiots were ever 5 under during a round ….ever😊
We’ve got a lot of young D1 college players at Montclair who come back in the summer…it’s a different game those kids are playing

Hey Zap, are you aware a former club champion at your place is/was a big mover and shaker with Northwestern athletics. especially golf?

I still think it's quite an accomplishment for a Frosh who has limited experience in a college tournaments to have the ability to turn it around like that.

And this wasn't just some country club, it's a 7,110 yard TPC course.

I should but not sure whom you’re talking about Knighty?
Changing the subject we have a really good young player who plays to a scratch and contends in all of our low handicaper club events quite well.
He’s not as long as the other college golfers and gets up and down like magician…he’s excellent but not a “ball striker” where the ball explodes off his club face.
Long story short he attempted to walk on with the exact game he has right now that would impress the hell out of us choppers at a good D 1 school…. Not only did the coach say no thanks, he couldn’t even compete on their intramural club team.
Lol
This is scratch friggen golfer, who’s rarely anything but even or under at our club

The son of a friend was a State Group XC winner. Wanted to walk on at a B1G school. They sad no thanks too.

Eric Gleacher. Also was club champ at Shinnecock. Had 25 at various clubs in his lifetime.

I think you were way too dismissive about the kids accomplishments. I follow RU golf closely, both men and women. Believe me turnarounds like that have not been the rule.

If Marcoux (#171 out of over 1800 in the country) isn't out for whatever reason and the women can keep the only 5 on the roster in order, both teams may have a decent year. Not talking NCAA's but maybe 75th or so.

For reference, there are 305 D1 Men's teams and about 265 Women's teams.
