Former Coach Theresa Grentz Elected to Basketball Hall of Fame

This is great. I can't wait to compare and contrast the two careers and achievements. One we ran off and the other we've granted the kingdom because of those accomplishments.
I had never heard that we ran her off - what is the story there? She seemed to have a lot of success here

My understanding:
Theresa wanted to be paid like the Men's basketball coach.(Bob Wenzel )
RU said no and off to Illinois she went

Her success level was falling here and the game was changing. She recruited alot of slow unathletic players
One of those players is a friend of mine 😂

IIRC, she came in as C Viv was starting although she was recruited by Theresa .. never played much, If at all

Well, the styles of the 2 coaches were not at all the same. That said, Tamora Young was a Grentz recruit IIRC, and fit in well with Viv's style. Jen Clemente was another player who had success under Vivian, though originally recruited by TG.

The problem was Grentz was largely recruiting the "Catholic School" circuit and a lot of local-ish players. Her success was fading because the game was changing, she was more about paint scoring than guard first offense; that said, Vivian was primarily recruiting skilled athletic players to play her defensive style that required quick players.

Yeah, she lost it..

No. At least, that was only a part of it. Grentz wanted to be an administrator. She wanted a promise that she would be considered to succeed Fred. Yes, she also didn't feel like she was being supported or paid enough.

Grentz had the gift of gab, was a good promotor, and did a great job for Rutgers. She was stale on the coaching side and needed a change of scenery by the end.

She had modest success at Illinois. Rutgers fans of today would not be satisfied with that level of success. 5 NCAA, 2 advancing to the Sweet 16 and 5 WNIT, 1 advance to the round of 16. In 12 years.

Yeah, she lost it..

Her last season was poor and it was evident recruiting wasnt keeping up. Rutgers was headed to tge Big East while starting to lose to schools she wouldn't lose to in her heyday..actually a similar situation to CVS decline.

Rutgers was no longer a factor on the national scene or in the NCAA tourney

LOL. I was actually reading the results upside down. Thinking the top was her last few years not her first. My bad.

I do recall reading back during her heyday of the late 80s that RU never bid on hosting the regional finals, which might have made the difference in RU advancing to the final 4. That was probably on AD FG, like so many other bad decisions.

I also recall during the same period, while Littlepage was still coaching the men, that the RAC was still hosting doubleheaders. The fans showed up in big numbers for the first game - the women - and many then left when the men's team came out, playing like they were still waiting to be introduced to one another. IIRC, there were a few doubleheaders when the women actually got to play in the featured (second) game.

She was a good promoter and I can still picture her saying "I want it (the RAC) sold out" time after time. Many students, particularly women from Douglass, used to attend the games back then.

Didn't the Gretz coached Rutgers team beat the CVS coached Cheney State team in the year Cheney went to the NCAA final four?

That was also the year RU won AAetc. Championship in last year of its existence while Cheney went to NCAAs.

Grentz also took three RU players with her, one immediately Schuyler (sp.?) and two stayed a year at RU before leaving. , Martin and ??. They were a big part of her early success at IL.

I think it was Alicia Sheeler and Martin’s first name was Kylie. Sheeler was kind of an undersized post who was very clever around the basket. Martin was more of an athletic stretch four. If I recall correctly they thrived at Illinois.

Yes that was some year for both programs. How good was Cheyney to come back after losing early in the season to RU at MSG, to later that same season beat RU by 14 at RU. That was a heck of an RU team, that AIAW Champ team.

Congrats to Grentz, well deserved.
