Here is a look at our top guys that could make noise at the NCAAs.
Peterson is currently ranked 19th. He hasn’t wrestled anyone ranked above him. His one loss was to an unranked wrestler and it knocked him down in the rankings. He has 3 good opportunities before the Big Ten Tournament. They are # 2 Ramos of Purdue, # 13 D’Agostino of Michigan (currently hurt), and Davis # 15 from Penn State. If he beats the wrestlers ranked below him and has good results against the Big Ten wrestlers ahead of him, he will get a good seed at the Big Tens. If he has another bad loss, his Big Ten results will be very important for a good seed at NCAAs. There are about 10 wrestlers that could win the 125lb title. And Peterson is one of them.
Shaver’s victory over Colaiacovo was a positive statement and moved him to 12th in the rankings. His one loss to an unranked Army kid is the only serious blemish on his record. Prior to the Big Ten Tournament, he is projected to face #4 Nagao of PSU, # 6 Cannon of Michigan (currently hurt), and #11 Bouzoukis of Ohio State. He can beat Cannon and Bouzoukis. Not sure about Nagao. Shawver could finish as high as 5th and maybe higher if Vito and/or Fix move down to 125lb. He could finish anywhere from 3rd to the blood round.
Moore at # 11 has beaten Camposto who is a former All American and Hines of Lehigh who was higher ranked before facing Moore. He has accomplished everything that has been asked of him. His two tests before the Big Tens will be against # 2 Bartlett of PSU and #3 Mendez of Ohio State. Other Big Ten wrestlers currently ranked higher than Moore include # 1Woods of Iowa, and #8 Hardy of Nebraska. A good Big Ten Tournament could get him a top 8 seed at the NCAAs.
Turley currently ranked #23 will need to turn his season around to qualify for the NCAAs. They are 8 Big Ten wrestlers ranked ahead of him. If he remains 9th in the Big Ten, results from the other qualifying tournaments could determine if he gets a bid. This first opportunity is this Friday when he faces # 10 Washington of Indiana. They have met three times and Jackson has won twice. Prior to the Big Ten Tournament he has a 50/50 chance against #22 Sparks of Minnesota. Also #5 Kharchia of Ohio State is likely out for the season. His replacement is true freshman Rocco Welsh. If Jackson can approach his freshman form, he should qualify and make some noise at the NCAAs.
I don’t know what to say about # 25 Soldano. Can he achieve his potential or has his style been well scouted? My main concern is his confidence. While currently 9th in the Big Ten, he has several bouts against high ranked guys before the Big Ten Tournament. They include # 19 Malczewski of MSU, # 15 Hoffman of Ohio State, # 14 Bullock of Michigan, and # 10 Salazar of Minnesota. Unless he doesn’t beat a wrestler ranked higher than him, he should qualify for the NCAAS. His future results will determine his NCAA seed.
Poz at # 11 is having a great year and has a very good shot of being a high All American. He has beaten everyone he has faced. If he beats #4 Smith of Maryland in the dual meet, he should be the # 2 seed at the Big Ten Tournament. The only unknown is how he will perform in a multi-day tournament when he faces tough competition. An appearance at the Midlands would have been informative.
Yara, like Poz, has done everything that has been asked of him. The highest ranked guy he has faced is # 21 Catka of Va. Tech. Being hurt for the Midlands and not facing any highly ranked competitors is the concern. We will learn more when he faces # 4 Davison of Michigan. He does face # 18 Feldman of Ohio State and # 22 Bullock of Indiana before the Big Tens. Yara should convincingly win both bouts. Yara should not get worse than a 10th seed at NCAAs. A top 4 or 5 finish is possible or he could exit at the blood round. Hope he stays healthy..
I don't see Cetta, White, or Clark scoring at the NCAAs. Hope the make the tournament. It is a great experience.
