This team is too small, young, and inexperienced not to run an offense without at least some structure to it, and Pike has been around too long not to realize that. GG can't be standing in the corner waiting to get the ball. JD con't be driving out of control to the basket and forcing shots. Getting shots in a structured offense will enhance their development and win more games.

RU got their fair share of shots. They missed too many. Some were good, wide-open opportunities, then some were forced & unorthodox. Need to polish up for the open shots and get back to fundamentals when in close.

With more structure there will be fewer forced and unorthodox shots and more high percentage shots.

The strength of this team is to attack the rim. More structure would be great for a team with a few perimeter threats. We have GG for that and then, there is everybody else. Personnel-wise RU needs to drive the lane & baseline as well as feed the big men inside. The problem yesterday was Illinois being faster man-for-man. Also, my general impression was that everything Illinois tossed up went in, and everything RU put up was missing or getting blocked. The matchups weren't in Rutgers's favor and fortunately, this will not be the case in every game to come.

We are a terrible team attacking the rim.
The guards haphazardly drive to the rim and get blocked or throw up low-percentage highly contested shots.

If they actually looked to distribute (to an open wing shooter or to someone in the dunker spot) after driving - that would be a different case.

They seem to have little inclination to do that.
And the coaching staff appears to have little inclination to impose consequences for poor offensive decisions.

I think something people are missing is that is tough to try to drive and attack the rim when no one respects your outside shooting. Illinois was happy to pack the paint and dare us to drive and we got stuffed or were forcing up poor shots because they weren’t worried about anyone hitting a 3.

They didn’t really pack the paint.

"We are a terrible team attacking the rim." The guards are young guys and two transfers. They will get better as the season progresses.

They were stuffing all of our drives. Just about everything Simpson and Davis threw up at the basket was slapped away and never made it near the rim.
The solution is pretty simple you take cliff out if the paint where he doesn’t belong and keep him on the perimeter in a million pnrs from the top and wing where he belongs.

Remove the help defender that none ot these guys can sense, or at least change the help defender from a big in the middle to a guard or wing who becomes in conflict with helping from outside or staying on the perimeter offensive player.

That doesn’t mean they packed the paint.
Don’t understand Beth?
When I see Simpson and Hyatt attempting to “go to the rim” and stopped by sea of opposing bodies arms and legs, all in perfect position without even a chance of drawing a blocking call, what is that?

Cliff would be far better off using him in this way, he could use his athleticism and jumping ability to time rebounds and put backs, he could also cut to the rim for lobs.
He’s so tied up and engaged with defenders looking for an entry pass he can’t do anything

Guys like simpson, fernandes, and davis NEED to learn to drive and kick. Will also open up the lane better for them.

What do you consider a "structured offense?" Illinois had shooters standing at the 3 pt line waiting to get the ball. They had players driving to the hoop as well. Because Illinois made their layups and we didn't mean their offense was "structured" and RU's wasn't?

My point was they defended the 3 point line but they didn’t need to pack the paint because they could defend our guys 1 on 1 for the most part. When we did penetrate they collapsed but we couldn’t make them pay because we did not penetrate with any control or purpose.

There’s no on to kick to in the current offense. And when Woolfolk is in with cliff forget about it.

Our small guards were abused on both O and D.
Making some damn shots would help.
Cliff has no hands and no touch. What did he do since last March?
With his height and jump couldn't he develop a baby hook?
Guess that is where lack of touch comes in. Sad.
We are expecting him to be Edey like and he doesn't have that talent.
When doubled he doesn't find a shooter.

GG, Oskar (of course they would have to be in the game first.....)
Even Hyatt as just a catch and shoot option isn't bad.

Even if that were true though and we had no shooters: the alternative isn't haphazard drives that get blocked or heavily contested.

I meant open. There’s guys capable but in current offense it’s not there.
