OT: Official Women's World Cup Thread

I just found it it was 13 goals. I stopped watching at 3. 13 is ridiculous. I hope they substituted liberally. But Alex Morgan with 5 goals, including 3 after the 70 minute mark, doesn't really speak to that.

I would not want to be an American tourist in Thailand today.

Perhaps they should cap goal differential per game. Make it a 6 goal advantage is it.. anything beyond that doesn't count.

Or maybe we don't keep score at all and everyone gets a trophy!

I have no problem with the scoring. It's the celebrations like they just won the world cup on the goal that was way over the top. After the 7th goal, it's a bit much. And yes rainbow warriors, I would have said the same thing if it was men.

Thailand was like a rec team.
I get your point, but what does the University of Hawai'i have to do with anything?

Meanwhile back at the World Cup... France defeats Norway and looks to be on a collision course to meet USA in the quarterfinals. That would kinda suck because on paper at least, they are the two strongest teams in the tournament - especially when you take home field into consideration. But such is the luck of the draw.

This

Most people don’t give a crap about the score.
The vast majority of the complaints are in regards to the excessive celebration.

That is called bad sportsmanship.

In baseball, you get plunked for doing that crap.

What is considered excessive? Fist pump? Dancing? Hugging team mates? You do understand that these athletes have been training all their life for this right? You're going to deprive them of that joy when they are able to finally do what they've been training all their life? None of the celebrations I saw was the in your face type celebration - maybe Rapinoe's but other than that, the celebrations were what your typical soccer player would do when you score a goal. By the way, Thailand beat Malasia 8-0 not too long ago - the Thai players were celebrating just as much when they scored the eight goal.

As Supreme Court Justice Potter Stuart said about pornography "I can't define it, but I know it when I see it." Rampone's fit the bill.

Completely embarrassing your opponent is not the way to go at any level of competition. They deserve criticism for letting the match get this far out of hand.

No problem with the score since goal differential counts and everyone will beat up on Thailand.
Big problem with the excessive celebrations. Totally embarrassing. What a classless showing. I root for every American team but they sure do make it difficult to root for them.

Rapinoe has already won WC’s and Olympic titles. She’s a seasoned vet who has scored in the tournaments before. She acted instead, however, like she got her 1st goal ever and it was the WC title game-winner with moments left in 2nd OT. That - and you do mention it -just spoiled everything else afterwards OTHER THAN the scores themselves AND the way our girls in the field handled their opponents following the whistle (which was beyond perfect).

Just read this article and the tweets in it about Rapinoe disrespecting the National anthem before the 1st game.

I used to like her, but her protests have made me very angry and now I can’t stand her and don’t care if the US wins another game.

Can’t believe I am saying that after rooting for them so much in the past.

Kind of a stupid move on her part. What does Trump have to do with women’s soccer? Just another example of TDS. whY is she thinking about PT? Go play soccer and enjoy the experience Angry libs, SMH

Once you know it’s over, do what Vince Lombardi said...act like you’ve been there before. Other than that...

Don’t forget Sweden gets to play Thailand too.

The Hulu thing someone mentioned earlier in the thread makes it easier to understand.

What a sad person and horrible American. I’ll gladly introduce her to ALL the gays and minorities I know who voted for Trump (and will again).

Amazing how fast stuff can go pro-anti trump in some of these threads!

Good thing for no social media, cable or main stream media access...I may have to hide for most of 2020...it is going to be a cluster! Buckle up

Not all of them have been there before

"In Tuesday’s opening 13-0 rout of Thailand, Lloyd entered in the 57th minute and scored in stoppage time. She became the oldest American woman to score at a World Cup and joined Germany’s Birgit Prinz as the only players to score in five straight World Cup games."

“I think I was the most excited on the last goal we scored, because that was Carli Lloyd. And I know all the history and all the background of that player to get to that moment, and what that meant,” Ellis said on the eve of Sunday’s game. “So I think that’s important to put that human element in this as well. It might seem a score line to you, but it’s also years and years of work. ... I didn’t know the score, I wasn’t celebrating the goal. I was celebrating Carli.”

“I’ve said this, whether Carli comes off the bench or starts the game, she is a game-changer. What I know is that Carli will always put the team first,” Ellis said.

This team reminds me of the UConn women's basketball teams that would be high fiving each other on the bench when they were up by 50

Rapinoe is always a "look at me" kind of person

Beautiful goal by Carli, falling away with the left foot into the corner of the net. To be honest, she could have 3 goals right now with a little luck. That early one from the sharp angle that she hit off the post and then the header a few seconds ago, which she could have done a little better on (keeper did make a good save).

Press playing very well. Fast quick touches and runs. Like her game today so far.
