PISCATAWAY, N.J. (June 11, 2019) – Rutgers University Director of Athletics Pat Hobbs today announced leadership changes in the men’s and women’s track & field and cross country programs. Robert Farrell will serve as director of track & field and cross country and Mike Mulqueen will transition to men’s and women’s cross country head coach. The contract of James Robinson will not be renewed.

Farrell has spent the past seven seasons as a men’s track and field assistant, including the last three as associate head coach. The 2019 Mid-Atlantic Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year, he helped guide the Scarlet Knights to a pair of All-America performances, two Big Ten titles, eleven NCAA Regional qualifications and 10 conference podium finishes this spring. This success was achieved under the tutelage of Mulqueen, a six-time conference coach of the year and five-time NCAA District Coach of the Year, who recently wrapped-up his 40th season “On The Banks” and 37th as men’s head coach.

“Robert is regarded as one of the nation’s up-and-coming track & field coaches for good reason,” said Hobbs. “It’s a tribute to not only his talent, but the mentorship provided to him by Coach Mulqueen. Retaining and strategically positioning the skill sets of Robert and Mike is a win for our student-athletes and for Rutgers Athletics. We look forward to a very bright future for our men’s and women’s track & field and cross country programs.”

Farrell has directly overseen jumps, throws and multi-events since his arrival in Piscataway. Under his tutelage the last seven years, the Scarlet Knights have earned nine All-America honors, 11 individual conference titles and 37 NCAA Regional qualifications. Student-athletes have also broken 14 school records, while totaling six Big Ten titles, 12 Big Ten medals, and eight All-Big Ten honorees.

Mulqueen’s career includes 29 Metropolitan team championships, 52 All-Americans, 319 Metropolitan Champions, 62 IC4A Champions, 12 Big Ten Champions, 434 All-East selections, and a Big East team title in 2005. Cross country and track and field teams placed in the top five at the Big East Championship 20 times, won 22 Metropolitan Championships and placed in the top three on 50 other occasions.

Robinson served 13 seasons as head coach of the women's cross country and track & field team programs, coaching 17 All-Americans and 10 conference individual champions. A 1995 Rutgers graduate, he assumed the reins in 2006 following the retirement of Roberta Anthes.

“James is an alum and former team captain who dedicated much time and effort to Rutgers Athletics,” said Hobbs. “We wish him the best moving forward.”

Women’s track & field assistant coaches Marina Muncan and Louis Tomlinson will retain their staff positions.
